As correct as you are, doesn't change the fact that the dub is sexist - which makes me a sad panda.

Good to know I'll never have to take you seriously again.

Really though, if you don't like it, go bitch about it to people who care. I like the dub and you clearly have no idea how dubbing works.

I agree, I may not have a clear idea of how dubbing works, but that does not excuse the writer for not carrying over the pun that was used originally. It works with the word "ass" in English, and keeps the character as intended, a girl who is acting for her job.

Instead, they completely ignore the intended use and portrayed her as a complete idiot. I would be having the same problem with the show if they did it for a male or unidentified-gender character. The more shortcuts like this are taken, the more the intended script is is lost.

One of the people working on the show has already complained about this and other script changes they've made for the english version.

I posted this thread for 2 reasons.

A) Because I figured other people in the anime community here on MAL would have a similar view on the issue of script translation, AKA "People who care." This goes for any show.
B) Because I had high hopes for the show, mainly due to the style and names behind it, and I'm rather depressed that Toonami-only viewers won't get the original quality work as intended. It upsets me.

Either way, in both languages, we already understand he is full of himself. It's pretty well emphasized.

The differences are that in Japanese, she calls him out on it: "So, you're an ass?" While in English, she makes herself sound like an idiot: "Hm... An Asteroid Belt?"

Once again, no idea how dubbing works.
It doesn't help that they're on a hell of a rushed schedule. They don't have time to work out all the possible sentences to fit the flaps.

On another note, I don't see how calling Dandy and ass suddenly makes what'sername into some sort of sassy, intelligent character when she immediately and continuously displays traits of a stereotypical Hooters waitress. If anything, Funimation made the one line fit better with the rest of her character.

Again, I stated earlier that "I agree, I may not have a clear idea of how dubbing works," so let's get that out of the way.

I also had/have no idea how "rushed" their schedule is - that's obviously some kind of problem with their planning department or something - considering subbers took only a single night to translate it properly.

Next, it's not that calling him an ass makes her smarter, it's that calling him an "asteroid Belt" makes her look like a retard. That's not something even a "stereotypical Hooters waitress" does. Even hooters waitresses are trained to act nice for their male customers, same with "Boobies" girls.

Even so, even if her real character ISN'T a smart girl who calls the protag out on his bullshit, and even if she IS a retard, it's not the kind of character we need in the year 2014.

That's something from the 80's or worse. Not now.

But that fact is the biggest problem with your entire argument.

Translation isn't the issue here. That's easy.
Sub groups don't have to worry about matching dialogue to animation, they just write shit at the bottom of the screen.

Oh, so you're just mad that they made a girl stupid. I'll just ignore everything from now on.

Also:
...from the '80s or worse.
Are you implying that pre-'90s anime are inherently bad just because they're older?

Look, I give up reasoning with you - I just wanted to let other people know about my view on what I've seen on the show. If people had agreed, that's be fine, if people don't, that's just as fine.

What I didn't ask for was personal attacks and rude comments. Simply stating you disagree and the reason(s) why would've sufficed.

Also, about pre-90's anime, no, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that back in those times, around 60-80's, sexism was rampant, and the idea of a bimbo-blonde being someone to laugh at is something taken straight out of the times when women were seen as second class or lower than men.

Think:

THIS
and,
THIS

That's what I mean't by "80's or worse."

Wow bro, wow. I don't even... you are beyond exaggerating this LOL. When I watched the sub I didn't consider 'ass' a better answer then asteroid belt, it was a weak joke in the first place.

So as I understand it, you'd be perfectly OK with the show if Dandy or Meow were portrayed as idiots but god forbid somebody perpetuate blonde jokes in this day and age?

By the way, that Schlitz ad is from the early '50s and is pretty terrible.
Burnt food still tastes a hell of a lot better than Schlitz.

I'm pretty sure that's wrong. In fact, if I remember correctly she calls him a maggot, because that starts with a "u" in Japanese, as does alien from alien hunter. The only word I'm aware of in Japanese for ass (shiri) doesn't start with a "u." I haven't watched the sub for this show yet, so this is only secondhand knowledge, but I could stop being lazy and pick it up if you don't believe me. If the subs you used said "ass," it isn't because that's what the Japanese said, it's because the subbers made a different localization choice in trying to turn a joke that starts with "u" into one that starts with "a."

Speaking in all honesty, I was exaggerating my point of view greatly in my original post - the first in this thread. This entire thing is just a minor annoyance to me - but it interested me when I thought of how others may take it.

Obviously, MAL was not the place to go for civilized discussion.

If only the general public on MAL was as open minded to discussion as things like IdeaChannel or PBS Gameshow on youtube, then this would have turned in to a discussion on the topic rather than an outright debate or argument.. But alas.

I give, Space Dandy is amazing and all the characters contained in its story are portrayed amazingly. There is not a single issue with any part of it, and I am a fool for having an opinion others disagree with.

Ahh, how I wish I saw the error of my ways and simply enjoyed the amazing ingenuity it must have taken to come up with 'breastaraunt.'

/s

Don't fool yourselves into thinking I'm some activist or something, I just had a thought and wanted to talk about it. I did not ask for all these insults and rude comments.

You mean since Yesterday... 1 Day, 5 Hours ago, as of this reply.

You must have very little patience for everyone who does not share your opinion, hm? Ever tried exchanging viewpoints, talking it out, coming to a consensus? We don't need to argue - I'd be glad to hear out your opinion.

In fact, let's start over - let me know what you think of it - without insults - and I can explain - calmly - how my viewpoint differs from yours, and we can compare. I'd love to do that.

"Breastaurant" is official, though.

Anyway, you can direct any further complaints to my inbox.

If you want open-minded communities like IdeaChannel or PBS Gameshow, why not go to either of those places?

The fact of the matter is you opened a thread to bitch and moan about the Space Dandy dub because "boo-hoo, they translated something in a way I didn't like!" and we don't take kindly to that kind of bullshit.
You've been here longer than I have, you should know better.

Protip: If you want to complain about translation and have any sort of credibility, learn Moon.
