There's only one anime that really takes the cake in that department:

Kurau Phantom Memory

Best first episode ever. Tells more story than most anime in 26 episodes.

Great cast, great music score, great art, great action, great story. Completely underrated.

For the wow factor, SAO, AW, Guilty Crown, Zetsuen no Tempest and Magi.

I tend to be a bit more biased towards romantic comedies, so stuff like Mayo Chiki, Sekirei and Sora no Otoshimono caught me quite easily.

Campione, Oda Nobuna no Yabou and Btoom are superb in my standards in based on art, story and genre variety.
A good mix between action and comedy can also be Highschool DxD, since it's also relatively popular.
