Yamato and LOGH
"If you tremble with indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine"

When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one
For the Union makes us strong

I enjoyed both Planetes and Ryvius, but Ryvius is in some ways a pretty different kettle of fish: softer sf, and more consistently serious in tone yet also less grown-up.

It's difficult to know whether or not you'd like it as much without knowing what in particular you thought was good about Planetes. Probably worth trying it, though.

Similarly, LoGH (which I see you're watching), Yamato and Cowboy Bebop are (loosely) sci-fi, and good, and I second them all; but I'm not sure they're all good in the same ways that Planetes is.

If you liked the hardish sf and political edge of Planetes, and its focus on a small team, you could consider Flag. It's slower-moving and a bit humourless, mind you.

Various bits of Patlabor have a Planetesesque very-near-future setting (even nearer future, with slightly less plausible tech) and a similar sort of misfit sitcom style. You could start with the first OVA.

Jizzy as you would call yourself because youre a dick The most butthurt award goes to you And clearly you havent watched that many shows thats why you cant determine if a show is unique or not Or maybe you're just a child who likes common stuffs where hero saves the day and guys gets all the girls. Sad taste you have there kid you came up to me in the first place making you look more like a kid who got slapped without me even knowing it and start crying about it to me

I recommend Mugen no Ryvius and Uchuu no Stellvia

Both are very well made with complicated social, political and personal relations and intrigues; and the most important, with strong sci-fi storyline.

Seconding Wings of Honneamise. It is among the best of hard sci-fi; you will not find another anime (or film) with such attention to realism, detail, and respect for human technology. Think Planetes without the romance or cheese. And this is coming from a fan of Planetes!
