| I got into a debate with a friend who insists that the 90s and early 2000s were the golden age of anime, while I think anime right now is as good as it's ever been, but it made me wonder if there are 90s and 2000s anime series that I'm overlooking. We're both millennials in our 30s, so I think he's just nostalgic for the era that we first started watching anime. He cites famous shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Outlaw Star for why he thinks the 90s were the best. Are there any other shows from that era that you feel like are underrated hidden gems? I'd like to see how they compare to present day anime. I think the most interesting genre to compare and contrast with now and back in the 90s is the isekai genre. I guess the 90s had a more optimistic vibe than the grim present day world because in classic isekai like Fushigi Yuugi, Inuyasha, or Digimon, the goal was to get back to their original world, and there wasn't as much wish fulfillment or overpowered main characters, but now most present day isekai is all about escapism. I actually miss the darker classic isekai shows like Blue Gender where the new world's setting is dystopian. |

| 90s are usually regarded as the golden age of OVAs like Black Jack. Cyber City Oedo. Gunsmith Cats. Shin Cutey Honey. and Gunnm As for early 2000s how early are we talking about if 2007 counts there are great anime like Terra e... and Seirei no Moribito and we have Noein from 2005 which I see as the best time travel anime and another perssonal favorite of mine is Vandread |
