For all the shit this part of the show is given, it was worth it to see this ending, Light’s defeat felt SO GOOD, after all the pain this man has caused, all the people he’s killed, it is deserved. From the moment Light killed his first “innocent” person (I used quotation marks because Light believed it was L when he did it) I’ve been against Light, and just kept hoping over the course of the show that this was leading to his end, and I’m very glad that was the case. And the episode itself was very well done too, another that I would say is among the best of the series, I loved the progression of Light losing his shit and trying every last thing he could to get out of this, I loved Matsuda of all people being the one to pull the trigger multiple times on Light, and Light’s final moments man, I may have wanted him to lose but that was a pretty emotional sequence, especially how the last person he saw was L, the young version of Light was a nice touch too, it makes you wonder how different his life would have been if he never found the death note, it’s like his dad said, whoever ended up with the death note is a very unlucky person.
And Mikami bro lol, this guy was fucking crazy, his reaction to his “god” writhing on the ground was amazing, at the end of the day Light is just another human, he bleeds and panics like anyone else would. Now when it comes to the way Near beat Light, did I like it? I’d say yes, sure it’s a bit convenient how things played out in Near’s favor, and even how they were able to perfectly recreate the real death note, but I really liked the sentiment of Near and Mello being able to match L when working together, I thought that was kinda beautiful, and makes Mello’s sacrifice in the previous episode feel a bit better, still sad that he died that way tho lol. And in the end, I can confidently say I chose the right sides in Death Note, I completely agree with Near’s words here at the end, that Light is just a murderer. No matter what, one person being judge, jury and executioner for the entire world is just a completely flawed justice, there are just too many holes in that logic. Yeah maybe the justice system we have is flawed too, but it’s hell of a lot better than what Light was trying to do, so yeah I’m a proud member of Team L and Team Near, I guess Mello too but his methods were never gonna work, but they sure shook things up. And of course, even with me saying Light is just a murderer, I know his character is deeper than that, but imo he just became too insane too quickly for me to ever agree with his actions, however I don’t blame anyone for finding him to be a character worth rooting for, he was super intriguing and entertaining after all. Also, hey we saw Ryuk again at the end! No idea why we haven’t until now but it did make for a great moment when Near acknowledged Ryuk in the room.
And that was it for the legendary “notebook that kills you” anime, it doesn’t sound as cool when I say it like that does it lol. But man what a journey it was, from the absolute top tier L saga to the slightly lower tier Near and Mello saga, it was a fun ride, even at its lowest points I was having a good time. I do want to say tho, Near and Mello’s time in the show could have been so much better, I still really enjoyed what they brought to the show and I like them as characters, but I think many people would have been more into them had they been introduced before L’s death in some way, like the way it was done was like “hey we know you liked L, but forget him, here’s two brand new characters to replace him”, it just didn’t feel like a good transition, and it also didn’t help that their part of the story was rushed, so not only were we supposed to adjust to these new characters, but we had less time to do it and with worse writing, so I really can’t blame anyone for not liking them or thinking Death Note fell off after L. With that being said tho, the Near and Mello saga still had some of the best moments of Death Note within it, and even with the bumpy road to the end, they wrapped it up excellently imo, so I still appreciate where the show went after L. But speaking of L, man was he awesome or what lol, there’s a reason so many found it difficult to accept his successors, L was just that amazing and irreplaceable, his part of the show might be some of the best anime content that’ll ever exist, it’s thanks to L versus Light that Death Note is such a classic now, and yeah it really hurt when L died, but even his death was amazingly done lol, one of the best episodes in the show no doubt, so yeah man hat’s off to L, probably one of my favorite anime characters now.
And I guess I should talk about Misa, I was expecting some grand death for her but that never happened unfortunately, I never hated her tho, she was a bit of a wildcard in the show and pretty sexy too, it really is a shame tho how she was treated by Light, she went from being actually clever during the Yotsuba arc to becoming a permanent tool for Light post-L, to the point she was removed entirely as a player and replaced with Kiyomi, and I know it showed her alive at the end, but there’s not many reasons to be at the edge of a building… not sure if she jumps or not but I think it’s likely since her one and only Light is dead, if so, RIP Misa, she was the 2nd Kira but in the end she was nothing more than a worn out tool. And since I’ve gone long enough already, I’ll finish up by saying the OPs and EDs absolutely ripped for this show, I was a bit iffy on OP 2 at first but it’s so unique for an anime OP and it rocks so hard, I think it’s a pure heater now, I’d put it on the same level as OP 1, same goes for both EDs. And with that, Death Note is done, if any future watcher happens to read this massive post, thank you lol, I had a lot to say and couldn’t tone it down, I hope you also enjoyed Death Note! And I’m also happy to finally say, as an anime watcher of over 10 years, I have seen Death Note.
