I'm so glad that they finally caught him.

I also liked how they made Light look pathetic once he finally realized that he had lost, because in reality, he's just a crazy murderer.

Light is an anti-hero, so I suppose his character development must be good if I was praying for his downfall.

since i'm watching this in the late ass year of 2025 i already had quite a few spoilers but overall a good watch! the final scenes showing ryuk and light's run until his death were beautifully cinematic, and cathartic. i heard the anime condenses a lot of the later part of the plot so it took me a couple google searches to make complete sense of the ending and near's deductions, and i kinda wish i didn't get spoiled for matsuda shooting light lol. it was satisfying that light lost but some aspects of its execution weren't. still deciding on my rating

The part where Light is struggling through the warehouse area wounded and 'sees' his old self and is haunted because he senses how 'innocent' he used to be strikes me as a bit odd. It's established in Ep 1 that 18yo Light thought the world was 'rotten'. He never had any optimistic view of the world at that time. I wonder if being the son of a cop made him cynical far earlier than otherwise as he'd hear about cases not reported in the media. I'm just speculating. I hope that Soichiro didn't expose Light to all that as a kid. I'm just wonder if there is an alternate reality where Light was a more happy go lucky kid that never would have picked up the Death Note.

Kira's laugh is so iconic. While the second half of this anime hasn't been very impressive for me, I still enjoyed a few moments overall. Nice!

"No, you're just a murderer." - Near

Facts.

What a cathartic finale. I know most people consider the anime inferior to the manga, but this episode was much better than the way it played out in the manga. Specifically, the way Ryuk wrote Light's name. In the manga he does it in the warehouse in front of everyone as Light begs him not to, but I preferred the anime version where Ryuk's on that pillar as the sun sets, and he's more wistful about how much fun they both had.

Also, the manga epilogue chapter was unnecessary, so the anime isn't missing much by omitting it.

Yeah, the second half of the story wasn't as good as the first, but at no point was I ever bored, so overall a great ride.

I felt so bad seeing Light going insane.. (such amazing voice-acting by Miyano Mamoru.. ) ..he was always so calm, always winning, always under control.. and after being caught and cornered, he still holds onto the delusion that he is God of the new world, of it being his "duty".. poor dude :( ..and then Near slaps him with the reality.. that he's nothing but a serial killer with God complex.. which is indeed true. Yet, there is something immensely likeable about Light.. and that is in the way his character is brilliantly written. My eyes welled-up seeing him see his own 18 year old self walking past him in his school uniform.. The final moments of Light was so beautifully directed..

Light seeing image of L for the last time before he closes his eyes dying reminds me of L'd death, where Light's face is the last thing he sees when he dies.. Light does love L, doesn't he.. if there was anyone he loved, it was L... such well-written characters and dynamic.. I wish there was an alternative story with just Light and L, now as friends in afterlife..

Ahhhh.. even in my 2nd watch - what a show :D ..I enjoyed it just as much, maybe even more so than the last time ..though it suffered from poor writing after episode 26, I really loved it.. the first 25 episodes and the last two, are just unmatched in their level of thrill! Very well-written (until L's death.. but I still enjoyed every episode after L too)

It's over... Light dies to Ryuk as expected after he got cornered and shot by Matsuda. How did Mikami die? I feel bad for Misa, she can't live without Light. I feel bad for Kyomi too she got betrayed by Light after helping him so much and killing so many criminals just like Mikami did.

For all the shit this part of the show is given, it was worth it to see this ending, Light’s defeat felt SO GOOD, after all the pain this man has caused, all the people he’s killed, it is deserved. From the moment Light killed his first “innocent” person (I used quotation marks because Light believed it was L when he did it) I’ve been against Light, and just kept hoping over the course of the show that this was leading to his end, and I’m very glad that was the case. And the episode itself was very well done too, another that I would say is among the best of the series, I loved the progression of Light losing his shit and trying every last thing he could to get out of this, I loved Matsuda of all people being the one to pull the trigger multiple times on Light, and Light’s final moments man, I may have wanted him to lose but that was a pretty emotional sequence, especially how the last person he saw was L, the young version of Light was a nice touch too, it makes you wonder how different his life would have been if he never found the death note, it’s like his dad said, whoever ended up with the death note is a very unlucky person.

And Mikami bro lol, this guy was fucking crazy, his reaction to his “god” writhing on the ground was amazing, at the end of the day Light is just another human, he bleeds and panics like anyone else would. Now when it comes to the way Near beat Light, did I like it? I’d say yes, sure it’s a bit convenient how things played out in Near’s favor, and even how they were able to perfectly recreate the real death note, but I really liked the sentiment of Near and Mello being able to match L when working together, I thought that was kinda beautiful, and makes Mello’s sacrifice in the previous episode feel a bit better, still sad that he died that way tho lol. And in the end, I can confidently say I chose the right sides in Death Note, I completely agree with Near’s words here at the end, that Light is just a murderer. No matter what, one person being judge, jury and executioner for the entire world is just a completely flawed justice, there are just too many holes in that logic. Yeah maybe the justice system we have is flawed too, but it’s hell of a lot better than what Light was trying to do, so yeah I’m a proud member of Team L and Team Near, I guess Mello too but his methods were never gonna work, but they sure shook things up. And of course, even with me saying Light is just a murderer, I know his character is deeper than that, but imo he just became too insane too quickly for me to ever agree with his actions, however I don’t blame anyone for finding him to be a character worth rooting for, he was super intriguing and entertaining after all. Also, hey we saw Ryuk again at the end! No idea why we haven’t until now but it did make for a great moment when Near acknowledged Ryuk in the room.

And that was it for the legendary “notebook that kills you” anime, it doesn’t sound as cool when I say it like that does it lol. But man what a journey it was, from the absolute top tier L saga to the slightly lower tier Near and Mello saga, it was a fun ride, even at its lowest points I was having a good time. I do want to say tho, Near and Mello’s time in the show could have been so much better, I still really enjoyed what they brought to the show and I like them as characters, but I think many people would have been more into them had they been introduced before L’s death in some way, like the way it was done was like “hey we know you liked L, but forget him, here’s two brand new characters to replace him”, it just didn’t feel like a good transition, and it also didn’t help that their part of the story was rushed, so not only were we supposed to adjust to these new characters, but we had less time to do it and with worse writing, so I really can’t blame anyone for not liking them or thinking Death Note fell off after L. With that being said tho, the Near and Mello saga still had some of the best moments of Death Note within it, and even with the bumpy road to the end, they wrapped it up excellently imo, so I still appreciate where the show went after L. But speaking of L, man was he awesome or what lol, there’s a reason so many found it difficult to accept his successors, L was just that amazing and irreplaceable, his part of the show might be some of the best anime content that’ll ever exist, it’s thanks to L versus Light that Death Note is such a classic now, and yeah it really hurt when L died, but even his death was amazingly done lol, one of the best episodes in the show no doubt, so yeah man hat’s off to L, probably one of my favorite anime characters now.

And I guess I should talk about Misa, I was expecting some grand death for her but that never happened unfortunately, I never hated her tho, she was a bit of a wildcard in the show and pretty sexy too, it really is a shame tho how she was treated by Light, she went from being actually clever during the Yotsuba arc to becoming a permanent tool for Light post-L, to the point she was removed entirely as a player and replaced with Kiyomi, and I know it showed her alive at the end, but there’s not many reasons to be at the edge of a building… not sure if she jumps or not but I think it’s likely since her one and only Light is dead, if so, RIP Misa, she was the 2nd Kira but in the end she was nothing more than a worn out tool. And since I’ve gone long enough already, I’ll finish up by saying the OPs and EDs absolutely ripped for this show, I was a bit iffy on OP 2 at first but it’s so unique for an anime OP and it rocks so hard, I think it’s a pure heater now, I’d put it on the same level as OP 1, same goes for both EDs. And with that, Death Note is done, if any future watcher happens to read this massive post, thank you lol, I had a lot to say and couldn’t tone it down, I hope you also enjoyed Death Note! And I’m also happy to finally say, as an anime watcher of over 10 years, I have seen Death Note.

i think there's nothing wrong with the ending, instead of complaining about something I would've wanted different i prefer trying to understand the ending of any anime thinking about what the author wants me to undestand and thus after rethinking about the entire anime and the various motives that an ending was created i then have my verdict.
in this case i have nothing to complain about Death Note's ending, honestly i just wish it continued, there's nothing like this anime.

Well. I dropped the show ten years ago because I was so upset that L died, so this has been a long time coming.

Firstly, I understand why so many people didn't like the last 12 episodes. So many slip-ups could have been avoided, and Near's deduction felt so... unatural. He was too perfect, arrived at the perfect conclusions, could predict Light's/Second L's/X-Kira/Kira every move, and I find that so boring. Light got nerfed badly. Why didn't he tell Mikami to keep a few pages hidden and ready to use? Why didn't he have a watch with a piece of the note? why did no one apprehand him, letting him almost kill them twice (he saw the names when Near showed everyone the page). WHY couldn't light wait A SECOND LATER before he incriminated himself? I don't know. I'm kind of disappointed but I still consider this to be one of the best animes ever created.

While I didn't enjoy Near as a character, I loved Light's schemes and manipulation tactics. I liked Mello and I am glad to see he somehow played a role in capturing Kira. Light is a phenomenal character, but I'm left conflicated. I didn't want him to win but I expected his defeat to be more fitting, one that truly measured up to his intellect. I guess the fame and him beating L got to his head and made him careless, forced into his own demise because of one of his pawns (which wasn't "stupid" Misa, but someone who he considered perfect, ironically).

Oh well, Light, L, supporting cast - what a pleasure it has been.

Ryuk's final speech confirms his absolute authority over the entire two-year saga, reducing Light's reign to a mere pastime ‹/𝟹. "I told you that I'd be the one writing your name in my notebook" is the final rule, executed purely because Ryuk grew bored waiting for the prison term to end (¬‿¬). This scene firmly establishes that the Shinigami was the true master of the game all along, not Light.

Mikami's bloody suicide with his pen is a shocking act of devotion that provides Light's final, desperate escape (╥_╥). While Light flees to die alone, the camera lingers on the fate of those left behind. Misa's return to the empty Task Force headquarters, dressed like a widow, is a quiet, devastating punctuation mark on the devastation (;_;). Her devotion cost her everything, leaving her directionless and alone.

I love rewatching Death Note; it’s ridiculous. It’s forever one of my favorite animes (and mangas too). The series is pure chaos genius—a psychological thriller where Light and L are basically playing 4D chess in real life. Every rewatch I notice some new tiny plan or hint about who’s actually thinking five steps ahead. The manga’s art is insane and the anime pacing is perfect. Honestly, it’s peak intellectual battle energy and nothing will top it ‹/𝟹.
