I have played them in the past (not right now). I think they are fairly enjoyable, even though they technically aren't video games because they are hardly interactive. I remember playing several VNs on PC. The plots were engaging. I don't remember the names of the VNs I played. If I had the opportunity, I will play some more anime VNs. Too bad they don't work on Linux and Mac; you need Windows to play it.
I have approximately 1 terabyte of anime on my computer.

There are some interactive ones, like the Rance series. And there are plenty that you can get working on Linux through Proton or Lutris. You can even set up DOSBox-X to be able to play PC-98 visual novels.

Back when I was collecting for the PlayStation Vita I played quite a lot of them, since jrpgs and visual novels are what the handheld was later known for, well that and indie titles. Had some pretty solid ones too. 💪

Would Katawa Shoujo count? Despite the anime-eqsue art style it was technically made by Western devs, although at least one of the artists is Japanese (the one for Hanako's route).
Some of you never watched Bakugan Battle Brawlers on TeleToon in 2008 and it shows.

Do you mean simply VNs in general, or specifically animated VNs?
If VNs in general, then yes, I played a few. If fully animated, not many, but I went through Yarudora series and bunch of random PS1/SS/PC-FX/PC-98 stuff that may or may not count as VNs.
If just partially animated, then filtering my list gives me over 200 results, so I guess I played a couple too.
Also, I just remembered I haven't updated my VN list for like 2 years, need to get to it someday.

There are VNs with actual gameplay too.

I don't know about Linux and Mac, but there are plenty of console and PC-98 titles you can play on emulators.
I play a lot through PSP emulator on my tablet/phone for example.

Most of those aren't visual novels. I don't care what VNDB calls them; it's wrong.

One can do that, or even play on an actual PSP, but none of them have English translations.

Well, the VN definition is often pretty arbitrary, and vndb sometimes does make weird choices, with some titles that barely have any narration being in the DB, but RPGs and text adventures with a lot getting denied, and I don't personally like to call something with a lot of gameplay a "visual novel" either, but if it is on vndb, then usually it's at least close. I think. I'm the type that prefers to either read or play, not both, so I don't really check this category.

I read everything in japanese, so I'm not familiar with the translation scene, but according to this, few do seem to exist. And other systems, like PS1, PS2, DS etc. have a lot of VNs too.

Several games are listed multiple times, along with games that were not fully translated. Adjusting the filters eliminates about half the games from that page.

These pages list a mere eighteen games for PS1 and six for PS2. The only console games translated in any significant capacity are those released within the past decade.

Phone ports of popular games remain unlikely to be translated for some reason, even though everyone has a phone.

@zrdb

Crazy to think that those games were adult oriented in their original forms. Makes me wonder how many people are aware of this fact. 👀

Clannad has always been clean and wholesome. But the sequel "Tomoyo After" was another matter.

Really? I could have swore that both Clannad and Tomoyo After were both just as bad. Guess I am misremembering. 😵‍💫

@MeanMrMusician I haven't played that one, is it any good? I will see if I can play it on a PC (once I get a new pc that runs on Windows, I don't think it would run on Linux or Mac).

yes, quite a few. I enjoy VN's because they tend to be willing to go into far more Taboo topics than anime (which already is willing to explore more than most western media)
