I tried watching the 90s version but ended up dropping it because it got pretty boring. It felt too episodic, and the story didn’t seem to go anywhere. I think I stopped around episode 12 or 13. Is the remake any better? The 3D animation looks great, so I’m thinking about giving it another shot.

Good morning,
I've seen both Trigun series, and it's normal to find Trigun a bit heavy going at first. The second half is much more enjoyable, but in my opinion, the ending is very bad. This, combined with the fact that things aren't explained very well, makes it very episodic and comical at first, with one character seeming a bit silly.
However, I do recommend watching Trigun Stampede, which is the prequel to Trigun, where everything is explained very well in a much more serious and sci-fi tone.
So, if I give MAL Trigun (1998) a 6, I give Trigun Stampede a 9, and I'm eagerly awaiting Stargaze.
I hope this comment is helpful.

The remake is actually less episodic and more plot driven. I do think the original has better characterization, at least when only comparing it to Stampede. Stargaze might change that. And the pacing in Stampede is much faster.
Overall, I actually prefer the remake. The original is outdated if I'm being honest. Most of its acclaim stems from nostalgic biases.

This is a remake so yeah you can watch it without the original series BUTTTTT

My favourite version of Trigun is the manga, It's a masterpiece and not even this new remake (I doubt it) or the old og series comes close to it.

The reason is that the OG anime has a filler ending and after the first couple of episodes its just anime only filler stuff.

Whereas this remake is way different from the manga too.

The manga is the definitive experience and its my favourite manga, One of my greatest reads.

I swear I felt the same exact way as you did. But like literally in episode 13 or 14 is when it actually locks in and starts getting really really great. It's like a completely different show. So I'd suggest actually giving it another shot and continuing from where you left off

So far, I've only seen the anime. Does the manga differ significantly from what they're adapting? Please don't spoil it for me.😅

Its like Night and Day, Way way different.

I suggest you read the manga, If you want Yasuhiro Nightow's original story.

But the art does take some getting used to, In the first few chapters it was hard to see what's happening 😂 but it became one of my all time favourites by the end !

Thank you very much.
I'll read it when I finish watching some anime that I have pending.

the OG Trigun is mostly about comedic space western adventures. the manga eventually transitions into the more popular Space Angle Bishojo Yaoi-vibe stuff that Stampede/Stargazer leans into. depends on your taste really.
