wow, what a crazy twist that really makes you feel for marina while making shizuka so much more complex than she already is. not to mention azuma and junyas talk tugged at my heart strings sm as an older brother.

| For those confused, here’s how the story plays out across timelines: Original timeline (2022): Takopi is sent to Earth to spread happiness. In this timeline, Marina still gets bitten by Chappy (like in the altered one), but probably later. Without Takopi at school, Marina isn’t as mad at Shizuka early on. Still, Chappy eventually gets put down, which becomes a turning point. After Chappy's death, Shizuka tries to hang herself—but the rope breaks, and she survives. Later, she meets Azuma and sees him with Marina. Azuma grows interested in Shizuka, and she eventually “steals” him from Marina. That betrayal pushes Marina over the edge, leading to her accidentally killing her mom with glass while trying to defend herself. Seeing this, Takopi returns to the Happy Planet to go back in time and kill Shizuka. His logic: if she dies early, Azuma stays with Marina, and her mom doesn’t die. But going back before finishing his mission breaks Happian law. He’s branded a failure and banished. His memories were supposed to be erased, but since he rushed back, they were only partly wiped. Current timeline (2016): This is what we’re seeing in the anime now. In this altered past, Chappy gets put down much earlier—because Takopi’s presence at school makes tensions between Shizuka and Marina worse, faster. Shizuka doesn’t try suicide right away. Instead, when Marina tells her “you have no one,” Takopi kills Marina in a panic, trying to protect Shizuka. That comforts her for a while, and with Takopi’s support, she eventually meets Azuma. Their bond grows, and she travels to Tokyo to see her estranged father. When she arrives and doesn’t find Chappy, she snaps. In that broken state, she convinces herself she has to kill her dad’s new kids to get Chappy back from their stomach. (She’s in Grade 4, going through this with no one to guide her.) Takopi tries to stop her. Shizuka, in a rage, throws a rock at him. The hit brings all his memories back. |
| Another incredible episode. That twist really made everything so much more complicated, but it also gives me hope that Takopii can find an actual solution to the problem. This is the first episode where he actually gains some understanding of not just what is happening, but of cause and effect. Takopii realizes that everything is a matter of cause and effect, and that perhaps Azuma is the only person who can help both Shizuka and Marina. At least, that's my prediction; I could be totally wrong, since I haven't watched episode 6 yet. The problem with Takopii is that he always tries to fix the immediate problems, but never considers why things happen or what they will cause in the future. Both Marina in the original timeline and Shizuka in the new timeline say that because of him, things are "not so bad these days." He does good all the time, but his actions end up doing more harm in the long run by covering up existing issues. He makes Marina's life better in the original timeline by giving her mentally fragile mother a glimmer of hope by getting Marina with Azuma, but does not address how Marina's dad is planning to divorce Marina's mother – at 11:20; translate and read the email – even though Takopii sees said email. He also does not address Marina's mother's emotional instability in the first place. Similarly, when Takopii helps Shizuka in the new timeline, he helps her with the bullying for a while, which only makes Marina even angrier. I think it's implied that without Takopii's intervention, Marina wouldn't have tried to get Chappy put down. Even worse; when Takopii walks in on Marina after she killed her mother in self-defense in the original timeline, Marina says that she should have given him a name: at that moment, Takopii is all she has. Yet, he takes off on his rocket to go back to his planet and "fix things", leaving Marina to kill herself... Also, something I haven't seen people mention is that when Azuma sees Shizuka again in the original timeline while walking with Marina, he flashes back to Shizuka as a child, with vandalized backpack and all. He didn't just abandon Marina because he's a simp. He left her because he remembered all the bullying that Shizuka went through, Marina's past as a bully, and the fact that Shizuka doesn't have anybody aside from him. Moreover, he still likes pancakes; because Marina's murder never happened, he never had his talk with Junya, and is still incredibly insecure and hard on himself. He did what he thought he had to do... Also, reading comments on this episode makes me think that media literacy is dead. Neither Marina and Shizuka are "evil" or "good"; instead, they become terrible people because Takopii never addressed the root causes of their issues. Marina was a violent bully in both timelines she learns from her violent and emotionally unstable mom, who was like that because Marina's dad was absent, which in turn was because Shizuka's mom is an escort, which in turn is because Shizuka's dad left Shizuka's mom in poverty. Shizuka is a manipulative and selfish psychopath in the new timeline because she learns from her manipulative and selfish mom which in turn is because Shizuka's dad left Shizuka's mom in poverty. Every single adult in this show does something wrong. Shizuka's mother is a prostitute and does not care for her own child. Shizuka's father likely met Shizuka's mother as a customer, and then left her; in any case, he's clearly an irresponsible womanizer. Marina's mother is ridiculously fragile. Marina's father is overworked at the clinic, and hires Shizuka's mom and does not care about his family as a result. I have a mess of ideas. Sorry for typing it all out; none of this fits together in any way lol |

| Lol at them unintentionally referencing the "distracted boyfriend" meme with Azuma, Marina and Shizuka. And did I just see freaking Azuma approaching Takopii with a star in his eye like Aqua from Oshi no Ko? So, another episode trying to justify Marina's extreme abuse towards Shizuka? Yeah... no. That shit is not gonna work with me. Parents are the villains here but Shizuka ended up broken in both timelines BECAUSE of Marina's constant abuse. Simple as that. |
| I'm not a big fan of this "plot twist", if I may call it, because the nature of this series is already confusing. No one is bad, but no one is really good. They are humans and they are not perfect, I like the message but it is taken to the extreme. |

| Past Marina still needs to pay for how she treated Shizuka. But all that comes from her mom, who, she is just something else wtf... send her to the psych ward. Was genuinely scared for her when it seemed like her mom was about to stab her to death; so you can imagine the sigh of relief when Marina turns the tables on her. Although it looks like she dies anyway as its implied that she ends her own life soon after. And in the midst of it all is Takopi, time-travelling, memory-losing, and just trying to make everyone happy. You can find the thing annoying with how clueless bro is, but I personally pity the little octopus for genuinely trying but still wondering why everyone is trying to kill each other. So we got to see the future, or present however you want to see it, before Takopi travelled back in time. Marina is still alive because Takopi hadn't killed her with the camera yet in the past, but Shizuka is still alive as well? All the bullying still had happened, so shouldn't Shizuka have hung herself that day? WOULD'VE ask myself those questions, but thankfully a student passer-by fills us the viewers in saying that she did try to kill herself, but the rope broke. Which means Takopi unintentionally was the one to kill Shizuka (or unknowingly-intentionally in a way, since that was the original mission after all) by giving her that friendship rope which did NOT break. Stuff was too strong. Marina would've die either way whether Takopi time-travelled or not, either by getting bonked on the head by a camera or by ending her own life (although Takopi probably could've stop her if he didn't leave so soon). And even if Takopi did keep his memories and went through with killing Shizuka in the past, Marina's mom's still a psycho due to Shizuka's mom, if not other reasons as well. Azuma choosing Shizuka over Marina is more than likely just one of the many things that would've sent Marina's mom over the edge. I feel like Marina dies no matter what, so Takopi must at least try to save Shizuka: Takopi has killed Marina and has 'saved' Shizuka instead. But let's used that "saved" word real lightly because Takopi has unintentionally created a murder weapon. If we actually see little kids' guts getting spilled, I'm gonna yikes for real. So it makes you think: should Takopi have just done nothing? Because Shizuka was still alive in the original timeline. Still broken, but alive, and maybe even a bit better as time may have healed some of her wounds. But because Takopi kills Marina, he creates a girl who takes joy in the death of her enemies, and gets the idea to both run away and to see her father and Chappy (RIP) in Tokyo.... and in doing so realizes that both the one thing that loved her in this world is dead and that her father whom she thought may have still cared about her, doesn't, anymore. Thanks for trying, Takopi, but despite all your good intentions, you should know that you've both become a killer, and may have created a monster. But there's one episode left: can the octopus do the seemingly-impossible and redeem himself, and somehow someway, let everyone live, and even be truly happy? Again, Marina for sure has to atone for her own sins, but I never wanted her to freaking die (her mom can die though idc, idk what backstory you could come up with to make me sympathize with her). At first I didn't want a happy ending, the darker the more impactful I thought. But no. Give me a happy ending dammit. You can pull it out of your ass or whatever. Just let everybody live. |

| i just finished the anime and im still very confused about this episode so of someone could explain something to me id appreciate it. when shizuka hits takopi with the rock he regains his memories and goes into a flashback of his original mission of helping marina. during the flashback he goes back in time using the clock on his planet but he ends up at a point... after he got hit with the rock? ive been rewatching it and i feel so dumb because its just not clicking for me. |

| I'm completely shocked... I wasn't expecting this plot twist... This was by far the most unexpected episode so far. Back in episode 3, I did think that maybe Takopi's original sin was just appearing in Shizuka's life, since he was the one that gave her that ribbon she used to take her own life, since otherwise she would take longer to make that decision, and therefore some could have saved her. But I wasn't expecting this reveal. Before that, it's horryfying to see the person Shizuka transformed into... As expected, her father didn't have Chappy, that was all a lie from her mother, Chappy was probably put down in that same day. It's also revealed that Shizuka's father doesn't care about her at all, and since abandoning her started another family. Being an unwanted child, while the father is taking care of his other children is sickning, and that was probably the last drop for Shizuka. After that she was completely mad, thinking that her father's children ate Chappy, and wanting to open their stomach's, which is just another way to say she will kill them. Even Takopi starts to realize how mad Shizuka is right now, and decides that's enough for the "field trip", but Shizuka wasn't having it, and if Takopi wouldn't help her, then he was better off dead to her... Shizuka has shown how evil she really is... But it seems this only happened after Chappy died/disappeared, since Chappy really was the only thing she had in her life... After this Takopi just decides to drop us the biggest plot twist and remembers that he actually didn't drop off near Shizuka in 2016, but actually near Marina, in 2022! Like, I was not expecting that. So Takopi's mission in 2016 was all along to make the 2022 Marina happy, and that mission was simply to kill Shizuka. All this, because in 2022, where Takopi never intervened, Shizuka never ends up killing herself, since the rope she used broke (and Takopi really took that mission seriously and resolved that problem quickly), and these 3 kids just continue to live their lives, in those toxic environments. Marina's father ended up leaving her and her mother, making her mother even crazier and more aggressive towards her. It's so conflicting, since Marina's mother actually blames herself for everything, but ends up passing all that guilt and anger to Marina, ending up hurting her, both physically and mentally. By 2022 she was completely a broken woman... And Marina had to endure that living hell. Only for Takopi to appear, and life started getting a bit better, especially after she reencounters Azuma, that is also all grown up. But as with Marina, we can see the results of that toxic environment he lived in, he was a completely broken person, still needing the approval of his mother. Not even being able to be the heir of the clinic, it implies that this pression he felt all these years, just kept growing and growing, and ended up affecting his scores more and more. I'm fully conviced that in a timeline where he starts not caring that much about the pression his mother puts on him, and follows more his brother, that his grades would just start getting higher. Anyways, it was heartbreaking seeing what Azuma has become honestly... To top all of this, Shizuka appears, and ruins the relationship Marina and Azuma had going on. This for one shows that Azuma only started dating Marina, probably because, in a way, Marina also needed him, making him feel needed once again. And also shows that he's still looking for validation from his mother, and since he sees his mother in Shizuka, when she reappears it's the perfect opportunity for him to "get in a relationship" with her, that from the short moment we saw, would be a really toxic relationship, where Shizuka would just manipulate Azuma into doing whatever she wanted. Takopi even describes this Shizuka as "a person with scary looking eyes", just like the Shizuka we have seen from these past few episodes (since this Shizuka also lost Chappy, we can assume she's just as evil as this 9 year old Shizuka we've seen). In fact, it's probable that Shizuka is back just to torment Marina for what she did in the past to her. So, in 2022, we have 3 broken teens, all due to the fact that their parents are horrible, and that made each one of them toxic, and in turn they were toxic to eachother too, which would just make the 3 even more broken. 2022's Shizuka was really able to destroy Marina and have her revenge, since in this reality, due to Marina's mother going insane over that Azuma broke up with Marina, Marina ends up killing her own mother to protect herself, and since she was all alone now, she ends up taking her own life too... No matter how, this anime always ends up with the darkest outcome possible... Takopi not knowing what "Killing Shizuka" really means, he just goes to his land to rewind back in time, even against his "mother"'s will. In this short visit, we can see that Takopi ends up acquiring a lot of the lessons he learned in earth, like going against what his "mother" told him, and actually hitting her (just like Marina would hit him). I was a bit confused on what rule Takopi broke at the start though, but it's clear that Takopi was coming up with the wrong conclusion on how to make people happy, and that's why he needed to be reborn, forgetting everything he knew. So Takopi's original sin was this, going against his "mother", and rewinding back in time to "Kill Shizuka". The irony is that when he forgets about everything, he ends up seeing Shizuka as the nice kid, and Marina the problem, effectively killing Marina, instead of Shizuka (although in the first try he actually killed Shizuka). This explains why in episode 3 he broke down when thinking about Marina's family and her death, his "hidden memories" probably were also weighting on him. To be honest, I'm not really sure what happened there at the end though, it just seems that Takopi was able to return from Tokyo, in the 2016 timeline. I wonder if Shizuka ended up killing him, and he just respawned there, or he just used some gadget, or he actually now killed Shizuka. I don't know, many things could have happened. Anyways, it seems salvation might be near, since Azuma found Takopi, which is surprising, it means that he wasn't arrested, at least for now, and he comes with a special sparkle in his eyes. That sparkle is giving me hopes that Azuma has come to his senses, and together with Takopi, will draw a plan so that the 3 of them (Azuma, Marina and Shizuka) can all be happy and resolve their problems, in order to not have their tragic ends we've seen in 2022. Episode 4 was the most beautiful so far, but this one was certainly the most surprising episode so far, with all the plot twists they kept throwing, and how much the perspective of the story has changed. Like, wow, amazing. And the scenes where they show Shizuka's eyes, it was so well done. When she gets to know that Chappy is dead, and they cut to her to she us the soulless Shizuka we saw in episode 1... This anime is just amazing at portraying the feelings and tension the story has. Peak Cinema actually. With only 1 episode to go, I'm putting a lot of faith in Azuma and Takopi to find a way to get these 3 children the happy endings they deserve, like the anime said they would in episode 1. I suppose the only way is to go back in time, and make Marina and Shizuka comprehend each other, since they actually can be the confort the other one needs. That will probably lead to a lot of changes that will just make the lives of these 2 much better, and with Shizuka and Marina being less broken, it would probably be the push Azuma needs to talk to his brother, and finally understand what he understood last episode, just in another timeline. At the same time, it means I'm really close in ending this fantastic anime :( |

This episode reminded me that the world is not black or white. There are no good guys or bad guys just the perspectives of everyone. Marina lost her family and crush however she goes to the far extreme and bullies Shizuka to the point where she kills herself. On the other hand Shizuka is manipulative and a psychopath but also lost her dog (her one and only companion), dad essentially abandoning her, and her mom spending so little time with her it’s like she doesn’t exist. Because of all of this you can’t really support one or the other without feeling guilt for the other. It’s now at this point you can support one but the other would need to die.

You can't really say "ohh Shizuka is the villain" nor "No, Marina is the villain", they both are broken human beings due to ther circumstances, and it just really depends on the perspective of everyone. Really well said! This reality ends up clashing with Happians, since they are shown to be this kind and naive species, that are unable to understand concepts just like "killing", which further shows why Takopi is so obvlivious to the characters motivations and feelings. The anime really seems to try and explore this concept of the human nature. |
