I know manga is considered "better" than anime, but how does it compare against visual novels?

The source material is usually considered better regardless of the medium.

There are some exceptions like Treasure Planet which was based on the Treasure Island book... I think.

Is that so? I didn't know Treasure Planet was so acclaimed.

Treasure Planet has become a cult Disney cartoon according to some fans, but in my mere opinion it's better than the source material(book).

I prefer Manga as I can't easily get into VNs, i get bored and/or distracted very easily.
I still have VNs I started years ago that I've not finished, and I'd rather read an actual book/novel over these.

Manga or Visual Novels?
Depends which one is the source material, if it's a visual novel then visual novel if it's manga then manga.

I just read manga and watch anime. To date, visual novels and light novels don't appeal to me.

I prefer manga over visual novels for some unexplainable reason.

I love visual novels, sadly most of them aren't my cup of tea.

Visual novels, hands down. Nothing provides a more immersive story experience.

@Absurdo_N liked the movie as a child, the book was boring (maybe bad translation) so I agree

Manga, there's some cool VNs but a large portion of them just feel like gooning material.

Most of that material can be avoided by choosing games such as Steins;Gate that were written without hardcore sex scenes.

If it's an adaptation, then depends on what the source material is. I think in most cases it's an adaptation from VN to manga, so the VN would most likely be better since it's the original.

If comparing them as media.. I guess I prefer manga. VNs are very time consuming and sometimes there are routes I don't care about but have to go through to know the true end. I'm also not a big fan of the concept of branching stories, unless there's one that's considered a "true ending" or there's a story behind the different branches like a parallel timeline in time travel stories, so there's one main plot.

Visual novels have no business being so expensive for what they are. So I don't even consider playing a visual novel.

I played the visual novel of Steins;gate but it was ... the anime made some changes that improved it (like removing the Mayuri/Okabe romance).

They are just different. I suspect it's easier for someone who enjoys visual novels to enjoy manga more often than someone into manga enjoy visual novels. It just depends on your tastes. Only issue I have with visual novels is how long it takes to read through even small number of lines and sometimes looping music can get on my nerves.

I think it’s fair to say that overall visual novels are better because there is less competition. Both have their own charm tho and it’s up to you which you prefer. Without a doubt in both you will find masterpieces

I would say VNs because they have voice acting (sometimes from Seiyuu I love!) and (usually)amazing music. The most important thing about VNs that I like is the ability to diverge narratives which can fully characterize most of the main cast via character routes. That and the ability to skip routes for characters you don't like. Oh, and if you don't like a bad ending because it has something that squicks you? Just skip it entirely! I love that kind of player agency that fixed/passively consumed narratives cannot provide.

Now that's a tough one. Even though I love manga, I feel like I'm more of a gamer these days. So yeah I would have to go with visual novel since it's just a bit more interactive.

I guess for me it depends on the visual novel. I may prefer a book over a visual novel if the visual novel has very little in the way of choices or consequences.

Nobody actually reads manga. And visual novels? They are not enjoyable either. That manga stuff is not good-quality entertainment. It is almost devoid of any real content.

Agreed! I especially like visual novels that don't make it completely apparent which route you're headed towards. Some VNs, especially the romance ones as of late, make it to blatantly obvious for my taste.
