MAL "wrapped" - An overview of the anime/manga the user watched/read during the year

This idea came to mind today, since spotify wrapped is so popular and people love to share how many minutes they have, their top songs etc.. I imagined it would be great to have the same here. Sharing watched time with friends, sharing the series you loved/hated the most, how many episodes you watched that year...

What do you think of this? Seems hard to make, but I think it would be a yearly event that the users would be looking forward to.

Sorry if this has already been suggested, I searched for some keywords that could've lead to this idea, but found none.

This is a good idea; I'd love to see that, honestly

Really cool idea. But MAL only provides us basic stats. And there are plenty of other things to improve on the site before they could even think of releasing their anime/manga version of Spotify Wrapped. So I just use anime.plus and export my list every month or so to AniList for other stats. If you export your list to AniList before the year ends then that would sort of feel like your "Wrapped", not really a year-in-review but at least you get more stats compared to MAL's. Maybe MAL could offer more stats to MAL supporters?

I think Spotify was the first to do a wrap where they give you your stats for the last year such as how many songs you listened too, you too 5 most replayed songs and 5 most listened to artists, there’s also a playstation wrap up too. Do you think MAL should do one? I think this would be a great idea so I can see how many episodes I watched this year, what genre I watched most, what studio animated the anime I’ve seen and other stats like that.
Please stop, I don’t want to see any more Dekugo😭

Since Malgraph already does a lot of this except it does it overall and not only for 2022, I decided to see what I could potentially get if MAL Wrapped was a thing.
The genres I watched the most are Comedy, School, Action, Shounen, and Supernatural, and the studios I watched the most of are Shaft, David Production, Kyoto Animation, Silver Link, and Studio Deen.
I also checked yours. The genres you watched the most are Action, Fantasy, Shounen, Adventure, and Comedy, and the studios you watched the most are Pierrot, A-1 Pictures, Madhouse, OLM, and Bones.
I don't know what you think of your results, but I don't think mine are interesting. The genres are too vague and doesn't include slice of life or mystery, which I consider to be my favorite genres. The studios aren't interesting either. For example, the only anime I watched from David Productions is Jojo, yet it's in second place.
I think that a MAL wrapped could potentially work, but it isn't as simple as simply looking at your most watched genres and studios of the year. Also, one big difference between music and anime is that people listen to the same songs over and over but rarely rewatch anime.

I have already seen something very similar to this if not the same but still I will say I think this idea is really cool. I don't know how much work would have to go into making this a reality but it is something I certainly can get behind.

I use Spotify and it's one of the things I personally look forward too at the end of the year. It is nice to see how much you have listened to music, what genres and also all the different artist. Using how Spotify is set out for their wrapped, MAL using your most watched studios and voice actors i feel like would be a super cool feature. This is of course just speaking figuratively however, it could be done. I feel like it would be a nice feature that everyone could have access too.

You made great points there, my favorite genres are not my top ones as well. But, as we grow each year, our preferences change and I still think it would be fun to see these stats yearly, and yes, it would be a ton of work for the devs, but I still think it's worth discussing the pros and cons of this idea.

Just to be clear, the genres and studios I said weren't meant for you but for @Sonnyman45. There was another thread similar to this, and it looks like they got merged together.

I've been thinking about this, and the limitations of what an external developer can do with access to the MAL API. On reflection, there was definitely quite a lot of worthwhile statistics that could be extracted.

And thus, without further ado...

The Anime Watching Challenges Club presents :
Your 2022 MAL Anime Year In Review !

Discover :
- How many anime you started and completed in 2022 !
- What were your firsts and lasts anime of the year !
- What you enjoyed best ! ... and worst !
- Your favourite sources, genres, themes and studios !
- What you watched from 2022 itself ! (and how much backlog from previous years you got through...)
- And many more statistics...

FAQ :
Does a manga version exist ?
No, and it will never happen. Our website only tracks anime.
Do I need to be a member of your club to access it ?
No, the only condition is for your MAL anime list to be public.
Do I need to log into this website ?
No, 99% of the website is accessible to everyone. Logging in merely verifies who you are and gives you some nice shortcuts in the menu.
When logging in, there are scary warnings about modifying my list !
Don't worry, the website only reads your (public) data. In a perfect world we could require read-only access from the MAL API, but this isn't available yet.
I entered my name and it says I've been added to the queue. How long must I wait ?
For performance and load reasons, our import script runs once per hour.
It now says I don't have any data from 2022 ?
For these statistics to work, you need to have filled in the End Dates for the anime you have watched in 2022. (Setting the Start Dates also helps.)
Can we have time/episodes statistics ?
Sorry, the MAL API doesn't allow access to episode data, making this kind of statistics impossible.
What are HoF Themes ?
Those were designed internally by the club from various sources (mostly AniDB & Anime-Planet), before MAL's genre revamp. We keep them around for legacy purposes (also some of those themes still don't exist on MAL).
I am a bit curious about all these challenges now... wait, is this a blatant ad for your club ?
Yes. But we also thought it was a nice feature to share with MAL users as a whole.

I love the idea of a year review/recap and actually made my own for personal archiving. Hoping for more development for the mobile app and an official #SpotifyWrapped inspired recap for MAL soon!

I think it's a great recommendation, I also don't see it happening until like 2030 knowing how slow the codebase updating is.

I mostly use anime.plus as well as Anime Watching Challenges Club's Hall of Fame for list stats.

There's also another one called The Anime Den. It's like a combination of MAL's Statistics in our profiles, anime.plus and AWCC's Hall of Fame but visually more similar to AniList's Stats tab.

I saw this thread and thought the exact same thing—why doesn't MAL have a "Wrapped" like Spotify? So, I decided to build it myself!
It’s called "Anime Wrapped" (Unofficial MAL Wrapped). It connects to your MAL account and generates a "Story" style summary of your year, just like Spotify. Mind it's just a simple hobby project, so it won't be able to handle a lot of concurrent users.

It doesn't store any of your data on a server. It calculates everything in your browser and caches it locally for 24 hours.

Do check it out and let me know what you think
