Volume 1, Chapter 1:

This story looks like it has a really cool premise marred by some terrible world building. The concept of a nation using suppressed minorities as cannon fodder is pretty cool and opens up many cool opportunities for storytelling. That concept alone shows why this series seems to be so well regarded.

My personal issue is that the world itself doesn't make sense. The country that was supposedly the most progressive and open society in the world suddenly turns into unimaginable levels of despotism in what was probably a few months if not weeks. People seem not to care about the war, but everyone is eating ersatz food with too many people packed into too little space. The government had no desire to perform mass conscription of these people even for the years that they didn't know the enemy robots will run out of batters in six years.

There are just so many issues that I haven't even covered that I wonder if I'm actually going to be able to enjoy this series. I hope that all the love this series seems to get points to the characters, action, and story being good.

Ch 1 - The narrative doesn't feel one-sided in terms of black-and-white mentality, or a better description is that it never "talked down to the audience" who's reading Lena's POV. It's unfortunate that the anime adaptation's first episode where it treats the audience as unknowledgeable in who is actually performing bigotry and hypocrisy with an anime-original scene & the drastically changed opening scene showing off blatant racism in a heavy-handed portrayal that's unable to merge with the story's tone naturally.

The anime-original scene of two teenage Albas cussing their assigned Processors was unnecessary (and "the worst talking down" scene) when seeing an earlier scene of two same-aged Albas being drunk should be enough for the audience to know the Albas are generally prideful bigots.

There are repetitive lines that even though they're different phrases/wordings, they've the exact same meaning so it's a bit of "talking down to the readers" when these sentences happen in the very same chapter. The author should trust her readers, even if they're teenage kids, that they're not amnesiac or that their memory is that of a goldfish.

Even though I've to tolerate the waifu-like behaviour seeing it's meant to be compatible with Lena's pure-hearted and naïve personality, I prefer the anime version where her eating the luxurious snacks before Pleiades finish their hopeless battle amplifies(?) her hypocrisy (and later on her hesitation to become Handler One) being shown more obvious & impactful to the audience though you've to endure the slightly overdramatic voice acting that almost ventured into "edgy territory" in that version of the scene.
