Thanks for creating this post. I read the synopsis, and I'm interested. I will watch the 2017 version.

The 2003 one is a masterpiece. I haven't watched the 2017 one but I've heard it has some of the trappings of recent anime. Maybe just watch both they're both short.

Although they’re both good, I prefer 2003.

Short answer: 2003 adaptation

The 2003 version I think is fantastic, the stories brought up are enjoyable and interesting to explore.
While the 2017 had lost some of the feel that made the original 2003 adaptation great. It had some original stories which were really fun, however it covered a couple of the same stories which I feel butchered the 2003 telling.
But, the 2017 is it’s own story and it isn’t supposed to be the 2003 anime, both can be enjoyed for different reasons.

Won't waste much of anyone's time, so I will give you a simple answer 2003 has what 2017 gave up for good art and animation that is philosophical thoughts the most important part of the anime so yes watch only 2003 one

I accidentally found this anime while browsing social media
After reading the synopsis, this is similar to the anime I've watched, namely Majo no Tabi Tabi, because I was interested, I watched it and it turned out to be a very good and interesting story. I haven't watched the 2003 version but I just start watching anime in 2018 and the average anime I watch is 2009 and above. So if wanna watch old anime, maybe I should get used to the graphics

2003 one definitely. They just don't make them like they used to. While this adaptation is not bad, the original took upon the vagueness of the novels and actually did something to mitigate it, so it enhanced the stories in a way...

this show fucking sucks and the 2003 is an all-time classic. this one doesn't do a single, solitary thing better than the original.

I watched all the old and new materials and I say that the 2017 version is better in almost every aspect, I think the only flaw is not having increased the time of the history of the coliseum to give a better depth but in terms of history the version of 2017 keeps getting better.

The 2003 version manages to give itself a bookend based on Kino's rule of not staying more than three days in any one place. It makes a point of having Kino mention it in almost every episode and then there's an unexpected payoff for it in the last episode. It makes more sense as a short TV series that way rather than just adapting several stories from an ongoing series of books. It's not perfect by any means but it's more elegant in this manner.

Yeah, this show was just not that great. Mediocre story (that’s barely even present), crappy CGI and animation, interesting concepts that are irrelevant to the story and never fleshed out, and the entire series is inconsistent.

I wanted to watch the 2003 series but this just put me off. Maybe I’ll give it a go in the future.

the 2003 series is just an entirely different vibe altogether. this series basically just adapts random LN chapters in the flattest, most boring way possible and i wouldn't conflate the two

have'nt seen 2017 version, but as most modern anime i dont think it can stand against 2003's vibe, atmosphere & positive nostalgia.

I have been watching Kino in release order. I loved the 2003 version, I can see why it’s called a masterpiece. I just now started 2017, and I have to say it was shocking in an unpleasant way. While the animation is top notch, Kino’s characterisation is just… off and it’s putting me off the whole series. It’s failing to create the same ambient effect either. I think for someone who hasn’t watched either, you could enjoy this series as standalone. But for someone like me who finished 2003 Kino just days ago, this one is falling flat on its face. I can’t get past the difference in original Kino and this Kino, which I think was a very important part of what made the series so interesting. Now she just looks like a generic doe eyed anime character. That’s just my opinion but there’s no way I can recommend this over original personally.

I've finally watched both and can give my two cents.

Short answer: watch both openings, you'll immediately know what version you'll like better.

2003 > 2017 imo

Long answer: both are good really and I could understand why some people would prefer one or another, its a question of personal taste really. Thats why I suggest watching both openings to get a general feeling of each, seeing the art and the tone of the opening may tilt towards trying one or another because their main differences will show.

I personally like the 2003 version better, its a masterpiece, but watching both and the 2003 specials was nice.

I think the 2017 ads to it but I'd go 2003, then 2003 specials, then 2017.
