----------------------------------------
This volume, "Yamato", was full of pop culture references, meta narrative (like characters commenting on other panels on the same page) and interesting panels (for example panels depicting the first appearance of Phoenix were looking like sun beams). Tezuka can even insert a whole nonsensical page about the Indians and General Custer, have the characters say that this is stupid and then continue with the story, lol. He surely liked to experiment. Not that the previous volumes lacked these details, but here these features of Tezuka's writing seem more apparent to me. Apart from that, I've noticed that Tezuka loves using recurring characters in his works, which I find pretty interesting. It's a whole universe of sorts (which I'm unfamiliar with yet, though).

Now, the story itself was again based on actual Japanese history (and some legends, too), which made it a lot more interesting, and even featured a character from vol. 1. I like how multilayered "Phoenix" is.

The Viz edition of this manga has "Yamato" and "Space" in one volume, so I guess I'll leave this thread for both stories.

"Space" was pretty tragic too. The contrast between ancient Japan and far future is indeed exciting. Interestingly enough, all of the "old" stories so far feature immortality as some kind of blessing, or a tool to save lives. But in both of the futuristic stories immortality is nothing more than a curse of eternal solitude.

P.S. There's an anime adaptation of "Space" made in 1987, and Kizaki is voiced by Kaneto Shiozawa, who's the seiyuu of Oberstein, one of my favourite characters from LOGH! Nice detail ^_^

After reading this chapter I can say two things:
1) Unexpectedly there are a lot of funny moments in the manga by comparison with the anime adaptations; however "Space" is more serious than "Dawn" and "Yamato";
2) The manga is definitely more detailed which makes you understand easier a lot of things; also I was really surprised to see a connection between "Yamato" chapter and "Dawn" chapter. That old man from Kumaso was actually the son of Hinaku and Em Dee, the boy who was climbing the wall. Nice!

Another thing I've noticed in the manga, related to the "Space" chapter, was that Makimura's childhood was pretty similar to the childhood of Godo from Hi no Tori: Ai no CosmoZone 2772. And they were both space pilots too ;). The only thing that was different was that Godo had the robot Olga.

Volume 3 Review:
Part 1 Yamato: This was a continuation of volume 1 right? The start did not hook me that much, but it few on me and I was fully invested by the end. I’m sad that they never ended up digging out of those tombs. As always the character development was awesome to see though and some of the long distance panels were drawn beautifully. The romance was also well done and I never expected the Phoenix blood to be distributed so widely.

Part 2 Space: First of all, the paneling in this part was so much better and interesting than part 1. I loved learning about the futuristic dancing. The progression of the story was amazing too. When Kizaki drifted away and we saw the four panels containing the crew members, his panel was just pitch black. So eerie. The crash landing on the planet and learning about Makimura. The whole dilemma of Nana turning into a plant was so frustrating, in a good way. And the origin of Saruta being ugly in all the stories?? I swear with every volume I think it’s in the future but it’s actually set even farther back lmao. A huge step up from Yamato which was already a 10/10.

The paneling of "Space" was so creative. I enjoyed this chapter a lot, Tezuka really cooked when he wrote science fiction. Also, very interesting to see his thoughts on things like machines being unable to surpass humans. The God of Manga and a man ahead of the time indeed.

Some bullet points I made after this chapter:

1) Nice surprise: in terms of the previous chapters, this is the chapter that is actually the farthest in time!
2) Past Phoenix was unforgiving huh... at some point maybe it decided to stop punishing people to live in a "penal world" after they commit a crime. Because a lot of other crimes were done after this
3) But really. Past Phoenix punished hard. Poor descendants of big nose dude were actually cursed! And now we understand why the scientist in "Future" was cursed to be ugly and rotate in Earth forever
4) Apparently the Phoenix can choose what the blood will do to the user that drinks it? In "Future" we've seen a character that drinks the blood and lives for a long time without going Benjamin Button style.
5) And the most important bullet point: so far both of the two characters that drank the blood had romantic relationship with an alien creature. LOL
