This was a pretty great chapter for everyone except for Mocchin yet again. She doesn’t get characterizing moments much, huh? I wonder if that’s intentional and it’s keeping her inner self and struggles secret for now. Kazusa dealt more with her struggle over how the world has been becoming sexual around her including the little boy she grew up with. She’s in this world now too and she has to deal with it and also think of Izumi that way, probably worry about him being with other girls too. She adorably read that book for moms on their growing boys and I liked the inclusion of Izumi coming over. Firstly, her father is as bubbly and cute as her mom is, Kazusa’s family is so sweet and it is starting to make sense why she is so “pure” or sheltered so to speak. She had to think about if her mom was a virgin in one of these last chapters if I recall! The other thing I liked was how it focused on Izumi dealing with this. As a kid and even when you grow up it’s so easy to view the world as if it revolves around you. That scene where she saw how he was more embarrassed than her, probably himself dealing with these emerging adult feelings, was sweet. That’s called empathy and seeing the state Izumi was in may bridge them together again, but to talk in public she will need to gain some courage. Also, I just found that scene hilarious. The shock of Kazusa when Izumi ran out and “you actually read those books?”, “AH.. O.O”.
Of course mixed in between that was Sugawara’s spotlight. She moved up in my eyes as a character from that! She was being stalked by someone and needed help so she called in Kazusa. That kind of thing is scary! So, Kazusa came in and freaking screamed gaining everyone’s attention, and then as she was breaking down Sugawara started to act like a pro, itching all over. It was hilarious, but the reason behind it is a sad one. Ever since she was young she had men preying on her and she learned how to scare them off through theatre and practicing those lines. It’s warped her view on the world to be looked at like an object this whole time. It’s sad and her director’s words to her are questionable, as a girl on the cusp of adulthood she feels like she plays into men’s fantasies, “they are driven to desire her”. The sad thing is, that’s totally a real thing too. I know first hand there are so many girls like her that get famous and have a huge driving of adults who desire them because of that. And it made her come to a conclusion that men are creatures that decide their partners by looks, never by personality, something that could totally hurt Kazusa with her current problems too. It also ties back into Hongou who was criticized for not being cute enough. Importantly it all ended with Sugawara bringing up that she will die with the girl inside of her and cutting off Kazusa when she tried to explore that. It feels like a call for help to me, but one she isn’t comfortable with. Maybe by having sex she’ll lose that girlhood and become an adult, escaping that. I think we should keep in mind her ability to act that perfectly, it means I don’t know when we can trust her going forward.
Hongou had a brief scene here on the roof. It was the first time I think she’s shown a rather strong emotion. The robotic Hongou was told that her manuscript wasn’t realistic enough and needs more emotional stuff. Perhaps she was angry about that. She looked determined and told that nervous teacher to go to hell, at least it looked like she wasn’t on the phone anymore. Definitely a big step from her normal attitude if you ask me. It also had me thinking about how I knew girls who would write erotic fanfiction in highschool and maybe even before that, that isn’t so common. And thinking about it that way, it feels clear that she’s exploring sexuality safely through fiction and internet chats and the like but maybe that’ll change with this realistic comment. I also wonder if she needs the money from this or something.
Then Sonezaki!!! I have come to deeply love Sonezaki and Amagi. They bring me a lot of joy and I hope I don’t regret feeling a little attached to them. Sonezaki comes off as insecure and due to that she rejects sexuality to the degree that she whispers the word and needs an alternative. She also becomes somewhat judgemental and aggressive over it but if someone challenges that coping mechanism she completely breaks down instantly. It’s really just a facade. Under that extreme appearance she feels like a real person with emotions and feelings. Amagi compliments that because she refuses to see herself as pretty or desirable and he boldly tells it to her face. She is called a girl in the garbage heap and she’s bullied, and he doesn’t care. His expression when she ran off reminded me of Jonathan in Jojo when he smiles about how cute girls are when Erina runs off. He feels genuine and strong! She can’t believe it.
Lastly, I wanted to briefly mention the pacing in this manga. Each chapter is substantial and feels great but I’m used to more establishing shots and little breaks in manga rather than panels directly cutting to different scenes. For instance when it cut from Kazusa in the shower to the handshake! It can give me a little sense of whiplash at times. That isn’t always the case though, even in this chapter it had Sonezaki run from the hymen comment and scene transition with two establishing panels for the pacing I’m more used to. I also LOVE the small font for “sex” and Hongou mentioning books have “sex” in the title half out of the panel with Sonezaki’s text box overlapping it to yell “That’s not an excuse”! |
