Often when deciding you're interested in buying a story, the choice between manga and LN is tough. How do you determine which one to choose?

    Examples:
  • Konosuba:
I noticed the beginning does not include how Aqua was dragged with Kazuma, she is just there at the start. Nor does it explain how Kazuma died. I thought these were both pretty funny and helpful moments to know. The idea of losing moments like these instantly turned me off from it. Though I'll miss actually seeing the hilarious reactions of the characters, I decided to go with the LN.

  • So I'm a Spider, So What?:
This was a tough one, because the manga does not seem to cut lots of content from the LN, and the art in the manga is very appealing to me. I don't like how the manga format can be consumed so quickly that I'll forget the story quickly too. From what little I've read, the LN for this series also seems to give some more character to the characters.
I can't make this decision and it's what made me want to make this thread. If anyone has suggestions about this one in particular let me know.

So how do you choose between LN and manga on a per story basis?

I just generally go for the original source, than try the other adaptions(not including anime since in most cases, that's how I get into reading the source material anyways).

agreed, if it was worth being adapted, the original must've been pretty good

Not all manga/light novels have been adapted to anime though, as is the case with So I'm a Spider, So What? Would you agree that without having the anime visual aid, the visuals in manga (especially when drawn well) can make the experience more enjoyable or immersive? Even if it cuts a minuscule amount of content?

I just read or buy both. For series adapted from LNs, the LN will always be the main thing for me, I just consider the manga to be supplementary where I can see visual representations of my favorite scenes, unless they have been cut out or the manga adaptation has left the LNs and gone horribly wrong.

If you like the series enough you'll end up reading both (unless you're pressed for time) I'd just read whats more comfortable for you = you can always read the first volume of each and decide from there. Not everyone is all about LN and they're not always fully translated either.

I usually go with LN as it's the original reference of the story of manga. Then read the manga later if I like it. And if I heard there's a bit difference than the source, I might actually read both alternately,

Always LN first since manga versions of LNs always skip details that are in the LN

Manga adaptation of LN are rarely worth it. Most of them aren't even as good or as complete as the respective anime adaptation, so especially when there's an anime adaptation as well, the manga adaptation often offers 0 advantage. Even when there's none, it's still sub par most of the time. Go with LN source 100% of the time.
