If you're a manga reader I'm sure you know that Kuzu no Honkai is being a bit rushed and have a few chapters here and there taken out and the story is rearranged, and yet it's still a great adaptation. The director sure chose great parts to take out which doesn't affect the story at all. So as for me I'm really satisfied at how this adaptation is turning out, especially with how great the animation looks as well, but I'm sure some people aren't as they want 100% faithful adaptations, so my fellow MALers I ask you, what do you think of this adaptation? Are you satisfied with it or do you wish that the pacing would be slowed down just a bit?

I'm satisfied with this adaption to be honest, although I actually quite liked the art in the manga more than in the anime (not that much different though).

Hell yes!
The anime is turning out to be way better than I expected. Everything from the art to the script is good. The script puts forward profound ideas in a very easy to understand way.

As far as it being a bit rushed, the anime is a full adaptation of 12 episodes and it is trying to adapt 4 chapters per episode, it does feel a bit rushed at times, but it doesn't take much away from the show.

Responding mid-season. The sixth episode had some moments when I thought a few jumps and omissions weren't beneficial to the pace or the story and there have been a few added details I didn't think were necessary in earlier episodes as well -probably most notably Minagawa-sensei licking her lips, for example.
... but, overall, I'm mostly satisfied with the pace and this adaptation so far.

As always, I like to compare adaptations with the source material while also considering different versions in isolation - as standalone products. Initially I thought about not commenting at all while the show was ongoing - to compartmentalise- but one of the things the anime has done is open conversations about the contents and societal implications to a broader audience - that has been quite interesting so far.

One of the main things I certainly like about the animated version is that it is animated. The added audio-visual elements that a black and white line art manga can only simulate, contribute to the experience, imo. Deliberate shades of grey stand out among the colours in certain episodes and the overall palette is quite interesting to me.

Inner monologues are spoken out loud giving voice to thought not that often shared so explicitly. Some people think the latter clashes with the "show don't tell" nature of visual story telling but I quite like the voice over narration here as well.
A music teacher's piano playing comes to life as few drawn manga manage and though musical themes are present in the manga they are expanded more prominently in this anime. Something I personally enjoy.

On that note, I hope you don't mind exploring some of that in this thread. From the beginning.

The song chosen for Kuzu no Honkai's opening theme: 「嘘の火花」, "Uso no Hibana", "Spark of a Lie", is a Semordnilap or hetero-palindrome. Reverse the reading order and it turns out we were given 花火の嘘 Hanabi no Uso, Lie of Hanabi. Flower fire, fire flower. Lie of fireworks. Creativity. Who, if anyone, got it backwards? In the anime credits it is top to bottom. Good to keep that in mind.

The song is by 96 猫. The band name literally means 96 Cat(s) but with some imagination their name can also be read as クロネコ [ku ro ne ko] and then it means black cat(s). After seeing the song title, and its possibilities for reversal, I started wondering if the person behind 96 猫 had already used such a linguistic strategy before - when picking a name. Reverse the order and it becomes 猫 69. More than one cat is already Neko-tachi and even spelled out backwards that's still a lot of cats. In the anime credits it is top to bottom....but not everyone swings that way.

What could go wrong?

i would say it's still pretty good . i wish there was more Ebato and moka screen time, mainly because they're my favorite characters in this story, and the viewers ( at least the people i have talked to) who haven't been reading the manga aren't really seeing their importance to the plot; but my guess is that we will see more of them, especially some of their back stories in the next few episodes. The art in the manga is great im just glad that the anime has the same type of style, because it's so pretty and the music is on point as well. As of right now(midseason) im down for a season 2 lol

Musing on the OP singer aside, I am definitely satisfied with this anime adaptation for managing to cram as much as they do into 12 episodes while still managing to keep the pace moving at a solid level. Ebato and Moka are definitely getting shafted in terms of covering their arcs (and the recent ep. focusing on Moka is definitely satisfactory, but very jarring and unexpected for a character who had easily been a very forgettable and invisible in the anime so far). I definitely don't think their own basis in the plot is being covered poorly and they're serving their purposes at the very least. I suppose only time will tell if Moka will continue to remain as irrelevant as she has been.

I definitely would suggest to anyone enjoying the anime to read the manga simply to get more story and stronger character developement, but the anime is definitely succeeding as a stand-alone piece.

While not the most incredibly relevant to the topic of the show, as a long-time fan of 96neko I can elaborate a bit on her and clear up some confusion. First of all, 96猫 is not the band responsible for the song, she is simply the artist singing it, while the composition/arrangement/lyrics is the work of Naohisa Taniguchi. Her name is meant to be read as Ku - Ro - Neko. As you theorized, it is a creative way of writing Kuro Neko or "Black Cat." This is likely the result of her origins as an utattemita in the vocaloid covers community, where artists are more commonly referred to by their usernames rather than real names or well thought-out stage names. In order to stand out, having a name that's creatively put together, eye-grabbing, and easy to remember is key. All this said, she is easily the most popular and well known utattemita with a decent amount of success in the more professional music business, and this popularity is most definitely why she still uses 96猫 rather than her given name or a stage name that sounds much less like a band. Unfortunately, I don't believe the ambiguity of her stage name comes from the possibilities of reading it reversed, though it's definitely an interesting concept.

I think "Glittering Lie" is taking the "Uso no Hibana" reading. Obviously uso/lie is a direct translation, while the of is implied for the english translation, since English has a tendency to favor sole adjectives over "of" phrases. I believe hibana can be translated not just as spark but as glitter/shine. It's probably just the result of playing with how to translate it and keep it a catchy english title that doesn't sound generic or too much of a straight translation. It's basically the same meaning, but since spark has a lot of weird electrical connotations in english they probably chose a word more closely related to light itself. I'm not certain if hibana can be used in the same electrical connotations as spark, so glitter was probably the closest translation to a hibana's brief flash of light. To make everything even more confusing, I believe the translation was done by a nico video volunteer translator. A lot of video translations displayed through nico if it's switched to English are in fact incorrect even if translated off an official video since the translation isn't done by the uploader/artist/studio. Unless the studio makes an official statement the proper translation is still up in the air I believe.

I personally like Glittering Lie as the translation, it's a much clearer way of keeping the original meaning in tact.

Unfortunately I've never heard of Sayuri before, but I do agree her name is very interesting and vaguely familiar... I can't think of anything I've seen her do before. I don't believe she was/is an utattemita anyhow, so unfortunately I can't provide much.

The Akutagawa prize winning novel by Naoki Matayoshi made Hibana a catchword recently and I wonder if the song title had anything to do with that...

"... still up in the air" is quite appropriate....

I think I only first really noticed Sayuri from her song used for the "Erased" ending, where I always thought her delivery had great impact. Maybe someone else will come along to fill in some of the blanks on that score...
