It's a decent anime that does tend to get overhyped. The main draw is the homosexual relationship point blank. I highly doubt it would get as much attention if it was a straight relationship or even a Yuri relationship. It does have a nice Intro song and animation (but does suffer towards the end). But the draw is the Gay couple that isn't an "are they or aren't they" type deal so many anime have done before it.

It's a good anime that breaks the cliche barrier of every sports anime, no loud-naruto-annoying//freshman type mc, never a team play, relatable anxiety issues, MC doesn't win, non queer bait etc.,

The success of this series goes beyond the boundary, YOI is nothing but achievements as it won many awards(Japan Animation of the year, CR, etc.,), best selling BD volume with 60K 1st vol. sales and consecutive 30K per volume sales that tops the Oricon chart, tons of collaboration like ISU World Team TrophyXYoi, Prince Hotel, Saga Prefecture,Namja Town, Mini Stop, Yamaha etc., Social media rankings:Yoi won 1st place in Tumblr and Twitter rankings with 1 million retweets and many more ass-flying collaborations.

If it's only for the gay, then Pure yaoi animes like Super Lovers or love stage should've sold well too?

There's something very catch since the beginning, you know? The energy, the vibe, I can't describe. It must be really a good team work in overall.

I wouldn't say only the gay couple (It's clear that draws attention, but isn't everything). There's many trivial yaoi avaliable in anime industry but YOI works with a meaningful approachment that envolves well made characters design, art direction and plot allotment.

The marketing is really good as well.
I remember when teasers were releazed, I thought it would be very interesting with the ice skating proposal itself although I've also bet it would be just another sport anime that serves meaningless fan-service. Then I was wrong. Man, I really got surprised with everything.

all characters are captivanting;
It got humor;
It got competition;
It have romance... for me it got everything to sucessed. XD

plus: It also have haters. I saw yesterday one being saying that YOI denigrate sport animes and I just laughed because his tweet won so many RTs and likes which no other tweet of him already did. Haters love YOI popularity too. XD

because it's gay.

My initial thought

Accurate as fuck. I tried watching it because many people said the music, animation, bla bla bla. But I found out it was pretty standard in all of those aspects. Turns out, "because it's gay" is the only somewhat good reason. People are that easy to sell to. Sometimes the skating routines were impressing. But it's definitely not worth it's reputation, or waste 12 episodes in it. Some are just enthusiastic about giving that image, so that could be another reason.
I guess if I had to compare, it's equal to Hibike! but the first season, not the good one.

I've heard so much about this. I'm a former skater and maybe I'll watch it someday. I lived the sport for about 10 years (was a LONG time ago), so it'd be like being a doctor watching medical shows.

Well,I will not dismiss that VictUuri is a contributing factor to the shows popularity. A huge margin of the fandom lives for this shit.
A lot of people are coming in to watch this because a sports anime is doing something different. It's touching upon romance,not a hetero one,but a homo one.

Most,if not all anime have sports anime that take place in a school level. Yuri!!! on ICE takes things international and has a multi cultural cast which may appeal to audiences who aren't Japanese. It doesn't stop there,it makes a mention of actual places and destinations without throwing in fictional names. It's tries to be as accurate as possible with the real world

Yuri!!!! on Ice also incorporates trends of today using social media as a platform for making this show feel real. (Instagram,Twitter etc)

Another strong factor would also be the very likeable and relatable cast. The character skating styles and characters are based of actual ice skaters so for anime fans who skate as well,this anime would prove to be very attractive. It can even lure fans who aren't into anime just because they are interested by ice skating. Character development is focussed upon here and they have accomplished more than most anime can in 100+ in this respect. Till now,nothing seems exaggerated. No superhuman abilities in the routines and no unrealistic characters

Sure not every character may get as much screen time as Katsuki but that one ep where they do is enough to give you a gist of what the character is like,what drives them and so on. Even that obnoxious J.J. that many detested won over sympathy.

The writers also haven't slacked of in producing and scripting a wonderful episode each week. The animation quality may have declined but it doesn't really bother too many people because at the end of the day,we get the message they are trying to convey.

Lastly it has created an ideal world for LGBT audiences where everybody is accepting of relationship which aren't heterosexual. While not totally accurate to real life, we can dream.

basically this^^
My favorite part of the show is the social media usage. Western social media usage. I also like the friendly and more or less professional cast. It's different from a lot of sport anime where the cast also has exams and school and there's always this one guy who's initially not interested in the sport.

My comment after binge watch it:

"OMG WHAT IS THIS PERFECTION.
I'm so speechless like, oh my god this anime is just so beautiful, everything just so so amazing.
This anime had me squealing like crazy
The animation is so smooth
The music is beautiful
There wasn't a single episode where I skip the opening during my marathon, it's one of the best anime opening of all time
The character interactions and developments is great. THE WAY VICTOR AND YUURI RELATIONSHIP IS PORTRAYED AND DEVELOP IS SO PERFECT I CAN'T
Thank you so much for making this anime!! God the industry needs to make more anime like this.

And the ending when Victor and Yuri skate together oh my god my heart.
I'm so beyond elated.
I love this anime so much.
Now I finally understand why this anime is so damn popular.
THEY ACCOMPLISHED SO MUCH IN JUST 12 EPISODES.

IT'S A DAMN PERFECTION: THE ANIME

10/10"

Because I don't recall an ice skating anime ever? There was Death Parade, but it only had a few scenes and wasn't focused on that aspect. And also because Sayo Yamamoto is a genius.
