This is a puzzle that is attributed to Einstein. We don't know for sure if this is true, but it is a nice puzzle. Also, supposedly only 2% of the human population can solve this. I think that is obviously false because this problem is more about patience rather than intelligence, but it would still be interesting to see how many mal members can solve it. Let us assume that there are five houses of different colors next to each other on the same road. In each house lives a man of a different nationality. Every man has his favorite drink, his favorite brand of cigarettes, and keeps pets of a particular kind. The Englishman lives in the red house. The Swede keeps dogs. The Dane drinks tea. The green house is just to the left of the white one. The owner of the green house drinks coffee. The Pall Mall smoker keeps birds. The owner of the yellow house smokes Dunhills. The man in the center house drinks milk. The Norwegian lives in the first house. The Blend smoker has a neighbor who keeps cats. The man who smokes Blue Masters drinks beer. The man who keeps horses lives next to the Dunhill smoker. The German smokes Prince. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house. The Blend smoker has a neighbor who drinks water. The question to be answered is: Who keeps fish? Answer using spoiler tags please, and include your reasoning if you can. |

It took me a while to solve this like you said lol but ALBERT WHY U GOTTA RESTRAIN THESE FRIENDLY FOLK AND ONLY LET THEM HAVE "PETS OF A PARTICULAR KIND" THATS THE REAL QUESTION ANYBODY CAN KEEP DAMN FISH IF THEY PLEASE, THEY'RE ALL PROBABLY GONNA EAT IT ANYWAYS AND WHILE YOU'RE AT IT, PULL THOSE CANCER STICKS OUT THEY MOUTH |

I think I did something similar in the past. Don't know if it was this version or another (easier) version. Probably an easier version. You need to apply all the statements - until you have used them all ... then you should be able to deduct who owns the fish. And you need to start with the ones that are obvious/leave only one specific combination. Then looking to apply the others. Maybe there are some where you have 2 options and need to try both (and for one you should see later that it is not possbile). I started with the nationality -> color/drink/pet/smoke and the norwegian = 1st house. Already gives a lot of info. Still not finished. Trying to do more now. |

This problem isn't very difficult tbh, you will need to make some logical conclusions initially, but the problem solves itself from there. |

Maybe its the owner of the blue house? I have some messages to Albert: WHY THE FUCK YOU GOTTA MAKE PUZZLES THAT TAKE SO MUCH DAMN ENERGY???? AND WHY THE FUCK DO THE ALL DO SOMETHING THAT WILL GIVE THEM CANCER??? AND WHY DO PEOPLE MAKE YELLOW HOUSES??? Are you being sarcastic? |

Going for the color/order next. 2nd house needs to be blue since the Norwegian is in the first house + next to the blue house. With "The green house is just to the left of the white one." it is only possible to place them on 3-5. 3/4 or 4/5 are green/white. Then I have man in center and owner of green house with different drinks. Meaning green can't be on 3. 3rd house is red and English in center is drinking milk. Green and white are on 4/5 position. Oh that also means only yellow is left - has to be the Norwegian (smoking Dunhills then). A bit hard to describe it all in words. I actualy did a table. Trying to fill it as long as I can somehow apply the statements when there is only 1 possibility/option. |

Man who smokes "blue masters drinks beer": I have only 3 left where I don't know what they smoke. 2 of them drink something different already. Swede can be the only one left. I know 2 more things now: He drinks beer adn he smokes blue masters. Owner of the green house drinks coffee: Only have 2 guys left where I don't know what they drink. One of them Norwegian (can't be green house). The german is green house then and drinking coffee. Getting easier with every step/hole in the table you fill. As water drinker: Only Norwegianis left. Blend smokerm must be in 2nd house as neigbour of the Norwegian. Can only be the Dane. Only for Swede or Dane I don't know yet where they live and Swede already smoking something different. This means 2nd house/blue is Dane. Swede is in 5th house (white). For Pall Mall smoker only English left. He is keeping birds then. Blend smoker has neighbour who keeps cats. Can only be Norwegian that keeps cats. The other neighbour is keeping birds. Man next to Dunhill smoker keeps horses. -> Dane/2nd house. For Fish only left: 4th house, German, Green, Fish, Coffee, Prince |

I can't draw a table here so let's pretend my columns are aligned. Yellow | Blue | Red | Green | White Norwegian | Danish | Englishman | German | Swedish Water | Tea | Milk | Coffee | Beer Dunhill | Blend | Pall Mall | Prince | Blue Masters Cats | Horses | Birds | Fish | Dogs The German keeps fish. I found it easier to draw up a table (kinda like how all five houses would look on a street) and put in new info accordingly. Mostly process of elimination here.

Yeah, that is correct. How long did it take? I didn't take note of the time. I started scribbling away after seeing the puzzle. Nah, definitely more than 45mins :o |

It's pretty though without cheating... Over 20 min to do it maybe 30 i dunno if i was serious, it would take around 10-15 min... It's highly probable it's the German unless i did a miscalulation I think i understand now why only 2% of people can do it. |

I think there might be still a lot of people that can't solve it. They just might be confused and don't really try. Or they are in trouble after doing the 1st steps when they need to think a little bit more. Probably also depends on country and the educational systems there. If people only have to work hard and less eduction ... the brain/mind is not trained well enough. If you went to school ... doin mathematics (based a lot on logics) and other stuff it is easier to do such puzzles. The 2 percent might only have been a rough guess and maybe that was based on the time back then when Einstein lived and education maybe was different back then. |

never ever is this a riddle for only 2%, more like 80-90%. took me 10 minutes while listening to euro dance, with a table though |

No, only 2% can solve it without cheating. Cheating by using a paper sheet i meant lol trust me, i struggled a lot. To solve it without, you really need to find some 'fix point' and be able to do deductive thinking while keeping in mind while you know already. I don't think everyone can do it. With a paper i would have done it in the blink of an eye. So the thing is more about how far can you go before you have some problem. For example, i found the color of houses and the others easy info to get in like 2-3 min. Real struggle was with Danish and Pall. Having all these informations and deducing without being confused was a pain. Really. |

Took me 6 minutes to solve it. The only real stretch of imagination was to figure out how to fill in the five blank spaces (houses) in the correct order. The rest was simple backtracking and filling in the blanks which required deliberation more than thinking. The answer is: German. The most important clues are: 1. The green house is just to the left of the white one. 2. The man in the center house drinks milk. 3. The Norwegian lives next to the blue house. + Norwegian's lives in first house. These 3 attack the heart of the matter: the order of the houses. PS y u alwayz post puzzles when im on hiatus? GranKuwagamon said: No, only 2% can solve it without cheating. It's not a step by step riddle where you would only have to retain the conclusion of the last deduction you made. You have to retain the entire 'information' given there. No human mind is capable of that. Though I think John Von Neumann would've been able to solve it in his head....well, he was an alien anyway. |

If we're speaking of the 2% then I'm up there lol MENSA members are the 2% of the world (I'm not MENSA member but I compete with em); top 2% is just IQ > 130. It's not possible unless we're talking of Neumann or Feynman or someone of their caliber. That would be 0.0001% or something. Not 2%. |

Well never been that interested in MENSA so I'm a bit at a loss with the direction this conversation is going, but anyhow, I'm inclined to believe that individuals such as the ones that take part in World Memory Championships would be able to solve this puzzle in their head. After all it's not the puzzle itself that's hard, but the necessity to store and organise all the clues in one's mind first. |
