While I haven't been much of a fan of Gon throughout the series, I did gain respect for him with how badly he wanted to avenge Kite and his exceptional will to sacrifice years of his life as a trade-off during his unsettling, yet sublime transformation. It added a lot of depth to Gon's character, and allowed him to break free from his flat character writing up to this point
