Paul the Octapus is actually Oberstein.

mellytan | May 4, 2010 8:02 AM
Happy Birthday, Paul.

Or he had already planned everything until the end of the universe, and didn't see any need for him to be around anymore, and died, content that everything would go exactly as he planned.

Which it of course did.

No way, Oberstein just manipulated future historians so that they'd THINK he was killed by terrorists. He's probably full cyborg by now and quiety ruling the universe from some distant star.

GreatEmperor | Mar 10, 2010 8:23 PM
Note: Oberstein was not killed by terrorism, he allowed them to kill him, as part of his grand scheme.

Yeah, to me at least, a lot of things that seemed like serious foreshadowing never came true...and that's one of my favorite aspects of logh. It made it pretty hard to tell whether or not something was really going to happen or not.

And at the same time, it didn't feel like the author set out to defy convention and damn the consequences. Everything comes out naturally.

In Oberstein's case it was like, "Oh yes, well of course a talented hyper-realist with few personal aspirations would be a useful guy for a leader to have around."

Or in the case of your example:

Such is the genius of LoGH.

Kaiserpingvin | Feb 10, 2010 12:47 PM
Yeah most every character trashed convention like that.

Just for the most obvious and fine example.

That first scene Baman screencapped I was like "oooooh shit, Oberstein crossed the line there." Luckily the kaiser understands exactly how valuable Oberstein is.

Man, I'm amazed at how awesome of a character he turned out to be. From his first few appearances, I was convinced that Oberstein was going to become a Grima Wormtongue-esque foil to Kircheis' angel-on-the-shoulder.

Oberstein passes new law banning appreciation societies in the empire for the possible contempt they breed among those excluded.

Oberstein Appreciation Society forced to go underground. Several members found and severely reprimanded for their conduct.

Right, the scripture of St. Paul tells us that it is a tool to be used (like humans). But we wouldn't be celebrating just any love, we'd be celebrating our devotion to the big O...

naikou | Feb 10, 2010 12:45 AM
Romance is a tool. Why celebrate it?

mellytan | Feb 9, 2010 11:43 PM
We do need some Valentines in honor of our great master...I've only seen those Yang, Reinhard, and Mecklinger ones from last year.

Or does the Great One does not approve of such a pointless celebration of sentimentality and consumerism?
