Hi there! I wrote a couple reviews on this site, and I have asked someone for advice in the past too many times. I decided to ask somewhere else, and this seems like a perfect place. Can anyone read my reviews, most preferrably my most recent one, and give me feedback? It's unproofreaded and may have a lot of errors, but any advice would be more than great. Thanks! |

Nice, I'll check it out if I find the time, good luck =3If you're sticking to the MAL categories (which are a bit limited imo) I'd put it under characters, just to separate it from story development. |

@YukiI don't know really, one thing I would try to avoid is saying things like 'others might not like this' and 'this might be a negative point'. It makes it seem like you're not sure and don't really know what you're talking about, you're basically the one who decides what was good and bad about the anime in your own review, if someone disagrees they should come with arguments of their own. To add to that, what Beatnik said: "1] Try to avoid using 'I'. It has a subtle negative effect on the reader. This simple little word can reduce you from an impartial review to a random person with an opinion." @Hussin You're not going to write a good review first try, nor should you expect to receive specific guidelines on how to write one. Everyone has their own method I think, you'll only become better through practice. Beatnik gave some good advice, start from there and find your own way of doing things. But I'm not a skilled or experienced reviewer by any means, this is just my first time posting. I don't think a lot of people are still active here, but nice to meet you all ;) |

Hussin, my opinion on your questions:1] The ability to coherently explain your opinion on something beyond 'I liked it / I didn't like it.' 2] A reviewer is someone who gives a subjective opinion on a show based on objective criteria. If there's a show in which every episode is just a static image of a boy staring at a wall with no dialogue, then it's most likely going to get bad reviews. Because objectively the show is not following simple storytelling structure, it has no beginning or end, no character journey, and nothing to say, no message or theme, and visually it's boring, etc. Some people may like it, that's their subjective right, but objectively this show fails at telling a story, and story is the reason we watch anything. 3] All a reviewer has to do is give an opinion and then back it up. We all have different tastes. Someone might give a show I dislike a positive review, but if they can explain why the show is good on an objective level, then I'll accept it. By objective, see point 2 above. 4] I think if a review explains his opinion clearly then he's a good reviewer. Just give an introduction to the review, explain why a show is good or not, and then give a conclusion at the end, summing up your thoughts. |

I gave some feedback to MoeGalacticHero on his page, but thought I'd recap the jist of what I commented, as its applicable to all reviewers:1] Try to avoid using 'I'. It has a subtle negative effect on the reader. This simple little word can reduce you from an impartial review to a random person with an opinion. 2] I usually ignore any other reviews of whatever I'm reviewing. Pretend you're writing the first or only review for a show, don't get distracted by other reviewers' opinions. 3] I think of a review in terms of 3 acts: intro, opinion, conclusion. Introduce the reader to the universe of the show, give your opinion on its elements (story, art, etc), then wrap it up with a definitive opinion at the end. Make sure to name all the characters properly, because if a reader spots a mistake they'll think you're lazy or didn't pay attention to the show. 4] Keep paragraphs short because readers don't like big walls of text. 5] You need to introduce to the reader what it is you're reviewing, even if it's a brief sentence about what the story is. Sure they can just read the synopsis on the MAL page, but a review always has to explain the brief jist of the story too, it's just a rule of reviewing. |

I'd really appreciate some feedback on my reviews. Keep in mind that the chikan otoko one was a pathetic first attempt, the lost+brain one was just calling out a rip off, and not much needs to be said about cross days anyway. My Berserk and SAO reviews are the ones I'm looking for real feedback on.I'm also currently working on an Aku no Hana review that will go up shortly after the series finishes. Hate reviewing incomplete series. I'd also like feedback on that when that happens. |

I look forward to you folks ripping my reviews to shreds as I start churning out more of them! I'm new to reviewing, but I enjoy it a lot. Any feedback (hit me up on a private message) would be appreciated, no matter how brutally honest. |

Wrote my first review in two years, woot! Nothing like a negative reaction to something to bring out the reviewer in you, that's what I say. |
