It's a bit late, but what does everyone here think of the last decade in film-making?

I'm of the opinion that it was an alright though somewhat contradictory decade in film-making, where there was a number of interesting and important films alongside a number of mundane and average films (in a film industry dominated by superhero movies etc) and many films that attempted to grapple with serious topics but didn't quite properly reach the artistic or level of seriousness required to be considered saying something profound.

If I had to pick the best films from the last decade, some of the stand outs would be:

Best films: A Separation, Capernaum, Parasite, Peterloo, Snowden, Spotlight, Free State of Jones, Sami Blood, Sweet Country, In This Corner of the World

Good films: The Florida Project, Vice, The Big Short, Green Book, Isle of Dogs, Roman J. Israel Esq., Lincoln
(among many others)

TV: Chernobyl, Succession, Homecoming, House of Cards (first three seasons only)...

What do others think?

@San-Diego China is a huge overseas market in terms of ticket sales. Problem is, Chinese government has a quota on how many foreign films it allows to be shown in China. Thus, Hollywood studios keep what Chinese censors like in mind when making films.

Now recently, the option of doing a joint production with Chinese film studios has become a good looking option, since those types of films don't have to fight for the few slots normally allowed for foreign films. If you go this route, however, it usually winds up even more pro-china than the former option.

I have a question, why Western Movies nowadays is always putting China related things by pandering it to Chinese?

Big fan of Bergman, quite into Tarkovsky, eternally skeptical about and yet regularly convinced by Godard's output, intrigued by Japanese New Wave yet much faster at finding new names than actually watching the films, and kind of sleeping on modern Asian arthouse because I laze through directors I should explore thoroughly, but Kar-Wai is fine.

For Japanese NW and Asian arthouse in specific, check the club "Cinema of Japan" which has a specific focus on East Asian cinema. It's quite cool.

Any fan of Ingmar Bergman, Tarkovsky, French & Japanese New Wave or Asian arthouse (Wong Kar-Wai, Hou Hsiao-Hsien, Kore-eda, etc.)?

@Jare4lopez
Welcome.
Personally, I'm not a fan of the Coen Brothers. I haven't seen all of their movies but of the ones I did see, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "No Country for Old Men" are the only ones I actually liked - though I must admit that the second one really pissed me off during the first veiwing and only later I started to appreciate it.
If You're getting into Coen movies just now, I would recommend "Fargo" - widely considered one of their best movies and I think it's also one of the most accessible ones.

Which movies that are coming out next year are You guys most looking forward to? For me they are:
3. "The Irishman";
2. "John Wick 3";
1. "Godzilla - King of the Monsters".
There are more but these are the ones that stand out the most.

I've had a really terrible week. But at least I saw a good movie...

"Bad Times at the El Royale"
I really liked the Noir vibe, the structure and the fact that it made me wonder what the hell is going on. I only wish they didn't show Chris Hemsworth's character in the trailer (but I understand - he's a big name so they wanted to draw a bigger crowd).

Don't know about you guys but I'm so happy that the clubs are accessible again! ^_^

@Timebendinghuman
Hmm, how come you did not like it? Everyone seems to have positive comments regarding that movie. I think they even followed most of the storyline of the comics as some friends told me.
As for the Maze Runner... I am hesitant. After reading the books, I felt quite disappointed with the ending. They could have done wonders with the "maze" theme but instead the protagonists got out and after the first book it felt like I was watching "Walking Dead." :P haha

On Friday, I went out and saw "Ready Player One". It's more "fun" than "good" - the movie certainly has it's problems but I had such a good time watching it. In fact, it's been a LONG time since I had such a strong urge to talk with someone about a specific movie.

LuckyAlix | Apr 11, 2018 6:10 AM
Just watched "READY PLAYER ONE." Quite decent movie, entertaining I would say but that's all. Although, if I reeeeelly think about it then it kinda reminds me of Savior of the Earth.

My friend also had seen it and sort of have same comment. The directir taika watiti seems to be hot stuff lately. I watched his hunt for wilderpeople (which very funny movie) and it really edgar wright-ism imo.

LuckyAlix | Nov 5, 2017 1:59 AM
I took my chances yesterday and watched THOR: RAGNAROK. I had a slight hope that the movie would have been more serious (well, at least that's what I thought seeing the word "ragnarok") but it was strangely too funny and maybe even a bit rushed.

karambia | Nov 4, 2017 11:13 AM
So quiet here. So what's new? Have anybody seen br49? Or any interesting stuff lately?

It is something more tho. And not just because of my emotional attachment to X-Men, Logan is just a really solid film on its own.
