Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru ka
The last film of Hayao Miyazaki, before he will retire from filmmaking and Studio Ghibli. According to some he is the Walt Disney of Japan with a legacy of classics enjoyed by many. Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru ka is (as maybe expected) beautifully drawn, with old style techniques blended with digitally altered textures. The interplay is very subtle and well done. A powerful yet fitting score accentuates the flow and scenery in all it's facets.
The story is set in the wartime Empire of Japan. A young boy moves from Tokyo to an estate in the countryside of Japan, with his father and new mother. There he finds a grey heron who leads him to the mystery of his family and the estate he resides on.
Miyazaki's films are often full with various layers that show themselves like the layers of an onion, without getting very complicated or overtly philosophical. For a long time when I was watching I expected some references to the various form of Shinto. This wasn't really to be in this film or was it? The topic of the centrality of life was often spoken about together with the harmony and cleanliness of the world. Both can be found in Buddhism and Shinto. One of the many but profound messages the movie gave was the search to the things above in the timeframe we have in our lives lived, but also that we shouldn't fear the end as it could be a new beginning. A strong movie and strong ending of a glorious career. I gladly advise everyone to watch it if you liked any of Hayao Miyazaki's earlier works.

Finally got around to watch this classic. An interesting movie to say the least. By accident i watched the remastered version but even without that the art still stands wholepiece. I am not familiar with the source material nor the background, only that it is an anime classic.
It shows a bleak new Tokyo, broken and rebuilt by the devestation that WWIII brought. This is the background that our protagonists. It shows without overtly too much drama, a hedonistic society where corruption, poverty, lust and sloth lead to. Youth that is aimless and worry about the next day. The film shows greatly the relations that orphanage children often foster. They band up to form a new family against better or worse. Bike gangs form relative large part of the film, at least from the beginning towards the middle. Clear similarities are found with the "Bōsōzoku" gangs right now in Japan.
The film portraits the main characters who are not just black or white 'good guys' but are conflicted individuals like many people in reality. So i found out that my opinion on a couple characters shifted back and forth throughout the film. Main themes the films deals with: the relation of power, how aimless the lower classes can be and how relations foster, stagnate and revitalize throughout ordeal.

Stumbled on it by accident. A very entertaining series. Beautifully drawn by the same production house of Clannad. The story was more or less always in the style of a feelgood story. Not too much action but the humor overflows into these empty spaces. It never went boring, unlike some other series i know. Recommended to watch.

Battery
Picked because it revolved around baseball which is not particularly known or very much played in my country. It is a slice of life story staged in a well portrayed (relatively) rural area in Japan. It shows the somewhat symbiotic relation that a battery (pitcher and his catcher) have. The series works up to a climax which it doesn't deliver. Take in consideration that the characters portrayed are mostly stock and this makes some moments grindingly frustrating in awkwardness. Although the series is made after a 90's written manga, this atmosphere and style does it represent well. It is really too bad that my hopes where too high for this anime to reach. Not that bad for a slice of live but not great either.

Cleared the first series. It was fun to watch. Good dialogue, memorable and likable characters. The idea of a special 'police' agency with special powers may not be that original, in this portrayal it did work well. If you like good humour and also a good blend of action, i glady advise this.

An anime that torn my hart to pieces. Before you watch this, acknowledge the best watching conditions: It should be best watched at night or in the late evening. The only seasons that fit when watching this, are autumn or winter. This is also because of the setting of one of the episodes and the last but not the least: watch it in HD if possible. The doubts and issues are very real and end up likely to be personal to everyone who watches it. This is the great pain and shining light that follows this anime. If you like emotions or a torn love-story, then you really should watch this. I only can say: a masterpiece. P.S. I found this anime because of this song: Stumbleine - Cassette.

Loved it. I really liked the European standpoint of this series. It shows the difficulties and yet the racism caused by another (very powerful) nation. By just demanding it, they stigmatized a whole race. Leila has a very great sense of justice and fairness with her. Yet also she has a ruthless and calculating side. These both make her a great character to admire in such a series.

A very nice anime. It touches on self preservation, revenge and also a form of personal honour. Locked up in a wicked prison system where it is not uncommon to be executed on the spot without any remorse. As a fourteen year old boy, this is quite shocking. But there shines also some light in his darkness. He does not have to fight alone to stay alive, the righteous always win in the end, but they need to struggle a lot longer to get there.

Denpa-teki na Kanojo
A very well made detective/horror/thriller themed anime. Enjoyed it a lot. What suprised me was the deep emotional lines that are spun throughout the series. It shows clearly the misguided paths people set for themselves. Even murder or manslaughter does not sound strange in this context. People are capable to do strange things, if they are hurt in a way that they cannot cope with it. Grief and feelings that sinc with it, are often destructive for a lot of lives. The horrorific thing about it all, is that what happend to the students in this series could happen to us all. The series shows this very clearly and in a realistic way. May you enjoy a great look into minds that are headed for the bridge between sanity and insanity.

Heard about this series through recommendations and the seasonal watch lists. A great anime. The animations are good but not the strongpoint of the series, as they are at times rough. The characters and the setting are. Captivating characters which makes you like and resent both at times in the series. It shows the duality of men very well. Throughout the series it came to my attention how much religious overtones the anime contained. Most religious connotations are Buddhist and/or Shinto in nature. For example: the statue that the mother uses as a point of focus, for her prayers is the bodhisattva Kannon. This seemed quite logical as this was and still is a popular bodhisattva. My surprise was great when a scene came which clearly and overtly depicted the Holy family.
Altough the story is quite tragic in setting, the viewer is not left in a state of disbelief and anger at the end.
The main themes of the anime are: friendship, dealing and overcoming your (literal) disabilities through ordeal or hardship and that in the end you can only truly become at peace with the world and it's harshness when you regain your true human compassion. A great enjoyable series. Recommended to everyone!

Not so sure about this anime. It tries to fit in multiple categories or at least tries to incorporate a couple of them. The story seems a bit rushed, this is very evident in the set of characters in it. They are all (even at the end) not very likable. May this be because of an absense of a meaningful backstory or that they are just a bit shallow feeling through their personal actions (and choices). The story reminded me somewhat of SOA but not in a positive way as this could not compare to it. As for example SOA tried to be meaningful and get into the watchers softspot, this series just falls short in all respects. Did not enjoy it very much but it was entertaining at least.

An interesting movie but at the end it fell a bit short in my opinion. It was a nice blend of historical narrative with experts and survivors of the Great War. A well equipped and well rounded anime. As seen obvious, it has a lot of ecchi and fanservice throughout the series. The main character is very protective about his friends and this accolades in a unnatural high power output. This partially creates the interest of the two main female characters. By times funny with blunt female/male interaction problems going wrong. Although it can be unrelenting bloody in the vicious battles that are fought. Gladly advice it to anyone who like Infinite Stratos or other female empowering animes.

As expected, a very well executed anime. A nice combination of modernity and a (high fantasy) medieval setting. An interesting concept to think about: another world directly connects to ours and how should/can we react to it? That is the main question of the first season. Also the difference in militairy strenght is very visible but puts also a different jacket on the whole ordeal. Brightly coloured fantasy characters mixed with the stiffness and formality Japanese are know for makes for some hilarious scenes and by times makes the series shine a lot. Remember the glorification of the JSDF is also rampant throughout but i guess it shall all be part of the experience.

Golden Kamuy
An interesting historical setting. Set in the aftermath of the Russo-Japanese War. The protagonist survived only through his ability that he can overcome death against all odds.
The visuals are great and convey the weather and historical of Hokkaido setting very well. The characters are well written and have meaning and depth. Each has a backstory which helps to understand their actions in the present. To my surpise there is a lot of attention to cooking, hunting and eating in a lot of episodes with the famous sentence: "Hinna hinna" to sum up it's attention to mouth watering meals. Traditional dishes are just one of the many Ainu cultural aspects in the anime. Together with sometimes hilarious dialogue miscommunications between the Japanese and the Ainu in the series. It executes humor very well for an otherwise at times bloody and serious anime. This breaks the tension and makes you actually care for it's characters and setting. The series portrays what loyalty and trust can do even if the outcome is uncertain or directed by coveted and treacherous fortune. Being equally the hunter and the hunted. A very enjoyable anime. Looking forward to the continuation.

Hello World
Heard about this film from a friend who shares my opinion on the two famous CoMix Wave Films (Kimi no Na wa and Tenki no Ko). When i saw the trailer i was hesitant as it was fully CGI and this is anathema to the drawn perfection of the former two films. Although someone may hope for a good story that makes up for it.
The story was alright, not great or special but it was entertaining. Sadly having the two protagonists (even thee if you count the his older self as well), does not work that well. I simply could not connect on an emotional level with the plight and hardship of the male protagonist as he had none to begin with really. This made him for me forgettable. The shock of his world being a perfect imitation is not so great. After that he leans on a speciality to make him overcome obstacles, this makes his development as a character more shallow than it should have been. Partly is to blame his older self. It seemed that they where two completely different characters, more akin to brothers or stepsiblings. Part of the character development went to his other self, which is quite suddenly introduced. The artwork (especially the backgrounds), other than the CGI persons is enjoyable and at times even beautifully crafted but holds no candle to other animes that do the same. In the end the film extinguishes itself through relative clicés and makes it intertwining stories throughs this weaker. In the end i was more focused on commenting on all the references to film and anime. Just a couple: Inception, SAO, Steins Gate, Fate/Zero, The Matrix Trilogy and many more. It is fine to include these but if they don't add anything substantial, it's probably better to leave them out. The themes that a a place is the film are what you would do if you could alter the past, to change the present and what type of sacrifice can wash away the mistakes of the present and past. The film didn't burn as bright as a torch but as a candle that in the end was extinguished by a heavy gust of wind.

Hotaru no Haka
Another film by the Japanese equivalent of Disney. It's Studio Ghibli's second feature film under their own name. It is widely known for being a sort of tearjerker like 'Titanic' is for some people.
The story follows two siblings witnessing the last futile times of WW2 in Mainland Japan. They are brought up in the family of a high officer of the Imperial Japanese Navy. They witness the bombing raids on Japan that increase in frequency equally in their destruction of the mostly wooden houses of many ordinary Japanese. Disaster strucks in many ways as you can imagine with a film like this.
The film clearly displays the raw things that happen when people are trying to survive. The world is not kind and is mostly centered around itself, even children are not exempted from this problem of putting the needs of the self above any others.
The main themes of this film are: coping with (sudden) loss, the harshness of existence and absense of kindness in wartime, the special bond that siblings can have and that the future only has one true ending. It is a relatively grim watch more about the general tone that is gloomy and sober most of the time. Sometimes it even goes into a dispirited form as the pit of suffering is only deepening. To my opinion not the strongest story, just on the general feeling, it lacks some sort of punch many other Ghibli films have with serious topics. The film tries to convey how the war impacted the lives of people who where forever altered by it in the end, as in war there are no good endings. Still an enjoyable watch for anyone up for a good movie and an interesting state of mind after the film.

Innocence
The prequel is a great feat of workmanship and storytelling. Staying relatively in touch with the original manga. The ending of the prequel was unsatisfying at best. It left me hungry for more background story and interest in the continuation. Sadly on all fronts this movie disappoints. Firstly it is shot in CG with is an actual downgrade from the first movie. The frustrating part is that tries to look like that first movie but it fails. Some frames look alright but if you look closer, you see the patchwork that is the background. When you see it, you can't unsee it and it will distract from the movie itself. The setting is after the first movie and follows the support character who is generally likable and alright. Sadly the stories goes nowhere and cuts and pastes itself through the movie with gaps and leaps. If the artwork was alright, does would soften the irritation but it's the opposite and it infuriates only more. The storytelling itself is a mess with a massive overusage of quotations and literary references. A couple is not a problem but a couple in one minute is too much. Not only that, afther a while they don't add anything other than frustration. The ending is one of the weakest i have seen in anime. It tries to be thought convoking but fails miserably at that, it only brings: where the hell are we now? Who is that guy they are killing and for what exactly? You don't get good answers at all. After you have dragged yourself through the film a rushed ending is shown and then the film finally ends, ending the torment for the eyes and mind. A great letdown for the franchise in general. If anything about this franchise ever comes out again: the standards of the first movie should apply. Take my advise and only watch the prequal, this film does not even deserve the name to begin with!

Not sure why i started to watch this anime but i watched anyway.
A well drawn, voiced and coloured anime that shines in it small conversations within the protagonist(s) heads. It is one of those cringy and awkward animes where the character is too shy to show their true feelings, resulting in hilarious misunderstandings.
This anime does it a slightly different way, it makes a game of it, with winners and losers. This together with the described above makes it enjoyable to watch, i heard myself chuckle way too often.
The last two episodes are probably the low point of the series but a lot of animes fail in that department, even ones with a serious 'story'. It does not matter too much in this one. A glad recommendation.

Kaze no Tani no Nausicaä
Another Ghibli-esque feature film that predates the true Ghibli studio, although themes, drawing style and the like are already visible. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where mankind has almost been vanquished through it's own greed. We learn about a princess named Nausicaä, who is the daughter of a ruler of a small nation. She loves to fly and to be outside in the everblowing winds that flow over the valleys. The film shows a great affinity with flying, wind and freedom. Ideals that will return later Studio Ghibli films. I watched the remastered blu-ray version. The simplicity of it's scale (meaning landscape and the general vastness of the setting) are great, together with small but consistent details in building and by example animals in the background. The story shows a content and peaceful nation that clearly is in tune with nature and it's inhabitants. This status quo is shattered when a plane of another nation crashes close by.
Central themes of this film are: manmade environmental degredation, the eternal human struggle of rule or to be ruled and sacrifice. The world building seems way bigger and complicated than the film shows, but it helps to create a comprehensible and connective world that never crumbles under it's own weight. A lot of animes can learn from that. Gladly advised to watch as part of watching all the Ghibli movies or as a standalone in the post-apocalyptic setting.

Kidou Senshi Gundam 00
The first season of the 00 universe of the Gundam franchise. It is well drawn and it is clear they used CGI for the fighting scenes but they have made it so that it seems to be drawn nevertheless. The story jumps into an earth that has build a gigantic solar panel system to power an earth without oil. This also created a world in blocs of influence and power. Within this standoff a shadowy organisation called 'Celestial Being' comes into being to settle the balance. The series follow the four pilots and the headquarters that support them in this endeavour. Nothing comes to pass without blood and sweat, especially nothing that has to do with the stubborn but as inventive human. The story follows the pilots and shows us their backgrounds in the 'famous' Gundam way together with their personal relations and relationships. The show can at moments leave you devastated but also in bliss, it keeps you always guessing and on the top of your seat as death can always come. Gundam is know for it's mature tone interspersed with violence, politics and some well placed humor. The frequent use of (at least a couple) stock characters makes some outcomes a bit more predictable but always with a 'Japanese' switch possible never gives the viewer absolute certainty. The main themes of the first season are: the balance of trust and distrust, coming to therms with your own past as well the squasing of ideological naivety that teenagers and young adults are prone to fall into. A good watch if you like Gundam in general but also if you want a standalone season of mecha anime. Recommended!

Kimi no Na wa.
Had the chance to watch it in cinema. I watched this a short while after Weathering with You, which it has some relatively small connections with. I already knew that it would be a great film in it's own right. I was not disappointed. The story revolves between two teenagers who live two totally different lives. One as a shrine maiden (a miko) and the other a city life in the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. Their fates and lives are intertwined, which will forever change their lookout on the world, it's relationships and where they live. The film makes subtle but critical notes towards (Japanese) society and it's specific preconceptions how where someone lives, it also makes what someone is. Two totally different worlds are displayed: from a rural, close knit and traditional village or town to the never sleeping metropolis of Tokyo. The interactions of the two protagonists is hilarious as they encounter situations that are only known beforehand by the other, and by this have an impact on the life of the other. Both experience certain emotions in their own particular dreams and ambitions, that come through the struggle of their mundane existence. The new perspectives change and fulfills these dreams to a new extent, but aren't the dreams itself that change? Various themes come forward in the film which connect throughout it: an almost nostalgic and melancholic yearning for a certain place but knowning that one can't visit it anymore or will not in a long time (comparable with "heimveh", a particular form of homesickness). That relations are not destined to fade but that the feeling can live on in the form of an item or a place. Names will be forgotten but what they meant will not and will be cherised even as one cannot remember who it was . The film is a good example what expectations can mean and how good it can be to witness another life and to help so that it's reaches greater hights through your qualities, as they are inadvertently different from the other. Very glady advised to watch!

A very well thought out and executed anime. I don't know the manga series but it was very enjoyable even without all the background knowledge. A series which takes on some philosophical and ethical ideas we humans have. This is not very visible but it underlines the series throughout. For some people it may invoke some emotion as the central characters are quickly to like and sympathize with. Central themes include: coping with involuntary permanent companionship, coming to know the "primal" or bestial side of men, to give trust even if you don't know if the other will reciprocate and coming to understand how the human stands in the light of the environment and liveability of the planet Earth as a whole. Heard a lot about this particular anime. It is part of a sort of subconciousness within the world of anime. Even if you didn't see it (yet), most people know it one way or another. It also helps that it got a alright western live action remake. This adds a lot for the recognisablity. The story follows a bit nonlinear pathway but never is that confusing that you can't follow it. The actions scense are superb en that handdrawn scenes makes it more appreciable! The main character has enough depth in herself together with the supporting character to make a believable character in general in the absurd and sci-fi setting. At times the film infuses itself with philosophical questions and doubts that plagued mankind from it's existence but bring to a different perspective from a combined human/cyborg and it's implications on the outlook in death and perishability. Sadly the only complaint i would have is the sudden ending of the film that leaves a lot to be desired. Glady recommended!

From the beginning not sure what to expect, but i was looking forward from new work of the studio which produced Attack on Titan. At first the synopsis just looked like a Attack on Titan ripoff but it proved something different in the post-apocalyptic/dark fantasy genre. The setting gave it some new dynamic as you can do a lot with steampower and the industrialisation that follows. The works with the armored trains is a nice play on the true trains who transported troops in the Boshin War. The series could use more episodes to make the first season more interesting and also give the audience a better understanding of the backstory. The main characters had some "storyholes" in them which made them felt a bit pressed and this sometimes made their actions not very understandable. The series has much potential and i hope we will get more backstory and lore in the next season.

Kurenai no Buta
Had the pleasure to watch this film in the remasterd Blu-Ray quality. Another great film by Studio Ghibli. Unlike much of their work before this film has a more 'action film' like feel with it. The story is set in a slightly different version of the Adriatic Sea area under the reign of Mussolini. The amount of detail is amazing and well visible. This can be seen from the clearly time correct buildings to the fascist-era Regia Aeronautica roundels on some planes. The main character is Porco, a fighter pilot for hire, a mercenary with a golden heart and a kind nature. He helps anyone out against the bandits that roam the area.
This is in most respects a modern retelling of the age old piracy on the Adriatic Sea. Now done not with boats but seaplanes, as they have best of both worlds.
What stands out is the absolute rule of chivalry and underneath that honor. Even the bandits are roused by a speech about their honor, this says a lot about the general characters of the film. Another striking example was that the main character was objecting that a younger female accompanies him to an uninhabited island base, as she is not married to him and will spend the night there. Also other characters flaunt their interest but always in the meaning of right order: first marriage, then anything more. In this, the film is very wholesome and nicely conservative. It fits very well with the era the film is set in. Main themes as i said earlier are: (modern) chivalry, honor but also to be courageous when the times ask for it. A very good film recommended to all, even for small children (if they can understand Tom & Jerry), they will also like this. Also a must watch for anyone wanting to watch all the Studio Ghibli films.

A great story about a boy who fights against the killers of his parents as well against anyone who speaks or acts against the Phantomhive name. The story is mostly about a (deep) dark desire of revenge and truth. There are many beautiful moments in one life, but first you have to break with your past. This all with the help of "i am simply one hell of a butler" Sebastian.

An atypical magical girl anime. At first hand the anime seems to be fair and brightsided. As the series continue, it shows it's real colours. Majo no Takkyuubin
An absolute wholesome movie worth watching to cheer you up. The story revolves around a thirteen year old girl who is the daughter of a witch. Witches are women that through their magical gifts try to help their surroundings, this can be in many ways. When a daugter of a witch become thirteen, they can settle in a different village or city with their services. By accident the young protagonist ends up in a modern city that has little understanding or real use for witches and their trade. She has to re-invent herself in this unfamiliar place. The film is beautifully crafted as expected from Studio Ghibli, even more so on the remastered blu-ray release i watched it on. The surroudings of the city where the young witch ends up seems to match various city in Italy (including a view into the mediterranean). The interesting part of this that the technology is partly from the 1930's but also from the 1950's. It blends well but sometimes it stands a bit out. The lightheartedness of the film helps a lot to dampen this. Main themes of this film are: growing up, becoming self-sufficient (having a job) and that human kindness and sacrifice are things to cherish. Also a small word on the companion cat named Jiji, that fulfills the comedic companion. Without seeing a whole face, it is well done to see his reactions and emotions in connection with what the protagonist experiences. There is a possebility if i ever have a cat, he will be named after this black and clever sidekick.
Overall i really advise people to watch this film, as it really could be counted as part of Studio Ghibli's best work to date.

As studio Ghibli holds a special place for a lot of anime fans, it also does for me. For this film i watched by accident the sequel called 'The cat returns' first. The film unsurprisingly left some holes in the story. I hoped that with the prequel they would be answered. They where for me partially in the end. The story revolves around a high school girl named Shizuku Tsukishima, a avid reader and smart girl with a great imagination. She has a relatively 'normal' life set in Japan of the 1990's. Right before the normalisation of computers, which is a blessing to watch. She and her friends have their typical moments of high school with complicating friendships and relationships.
One day Shizuku sees a cat taking the local train. Intrigued she follows him and ends up at an antique shop that has all kinds of interesting items. Through clumsiness and coincidence, she befriends the grandson of the antiquarian, who is studying to become a luthier. But their friendship may be not as accidental as it may seem.

The film shows very well the struggling and doubts of many teenagers (even those of today). This is nothing new but some particular aspects may resonate with a particular generation in recognition. When she is suddenly seperated from those she cares about, she unconsciously puts these troubles to paper and writes a story about a beautiful statue she has seen but only knows the name of.
Sometimes things of a strange nature can be possible, especially when the heart is involved. I see this as a reference to the title: she didn't write with her ratio but with her heart. As the heart can uncover thoughts and ideas without speaking or thinking, it just knows. She in a sense but her heart to paper.

The song "Take Me Home, Country Roads" by John Denver, plays a big part in the film, which by accident i have a great sentimental connection with. The film is greatly recommended for anyone who wants a picturesque and wholesome story intertwined with some relatable situations many had in their lives. To end this i will quote one of Shizuku's variations on the melody of "Take Me Home, Country Roads":

Country road
Kono michi Furusato e Tsuzuitemo
Boku wa Yukanai sa Yukanai
Country road

Translation:

Country road
Even though this road continues to my hometown
I just can't go, I can't go

Mononoke Hime
Before i watched this anime, i already knew this would be a very good movie. Most critics loved it and it received favourable reactions. The story is set in a medieval Japan trough the Muromachi period (aprox. 1336-1573). The setting is well done and blended with the various kami and supernatural beings the Japanese folklore is known to have. The story main themes are: redemption, coming to terms with the hard reality that flows through life and what rapid industrialization does to a mostly agricultural society. The movie is beautifully (hand)drawn, altough it is not the newest (1997), it still looks alright and very watchable. As a feature length film it captures the attention of the viewer and holds it throughout the movie, there are now really weak scenes or outrageous cliches. Much recommended to watch.

I watched this not knowing it was classified as a spinoff of another film. This explains some points in the plot.
The film itself revolves around the secret lives what cats have. The protagonist by accident finds out about this and is swept up by as if in a whirlwind. She ends up in this world ruled by the Cat King who has plans for her. She receives help from unlikely places. This makes for an amazing and enjoyable latter part. It is by no means a boring film but due to it's shortness it is relatively straight on with it's storytelling. It is simply an enjoyable film that serves as a specfic spinoff for another film: Whisper of the heart. I can recommend this film but with the small disclaimer that watching the film mentioned above first.

This series was recommended to me by a friend. I liked the theme setting because it slightly reminded me of Attack on Titan anime. Still that doesn't mean that the series will be good ofcourse. First point i had some troubles with, was the "childish" drawing style that was chosen. The action was alright but not spectacularly new in any kind. What also bothered me very much that it doesn't feels finished at all. I know that the manga is still continuing but it feels even empty with that in mind. Interesting setup but not that original. A classic setting: all girls school got co-ed and suddenly the guys are deep in a problematic situation. Funny but vulgar at times. The anime is not as lighthearted as other 'ecchi' anime most often are. Funny situations are often around to lighten the dim and violent nature of the anime. Blood flows regulary and sometimes excessive but it fits the setting, which in itself is excessive. Enjoyable watch, especially when the continuation of the manga is read after.

Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi
I have watched this movie when i was younger and had no real knowledge or understanding about anime other that it came from the same country as Pokemon, Digimon etc. It was a bliss to re-watch it. The story does not waste time in dabbling in the real world but quickly transitions to the spirit world, where the magic happens (no pun intended). A human girl accidentally ends up in the spirit world and not just any place in that world. A luxury wellness resort for all kinds of weary spirits, monsters and gods. In the style of the industrializing time around the Meiji era. The worldbuilding is relatively small but the depth makes that not a problem. When you watch the film, you can almost draw a map of how the building is laid out, this conveys a clear idea from the writer and drawing staff. The film is rich in folklore from Japan through (mostly indigenous) Shinto but also references to more Western folklore and fairytales. The film is also rich in euphemisms and societal commentary throughout it's runtime.
The tale shows a a world initally quite hostile but that friends can be found anywhere if you are willing. With perseverance Chihiro tackles her new job in a new world where she is unfamiliar with, this creates memorable situations for various reasons. But children are not as adults, they are not yet 'corrupted' through the harshness of life. They will speak the truth and act to it as they follow their intuition naturally. I gladly recommend this classic and renowned film. It is one of those masterpieces you have to see if you like to watch films in general and especially if you like anime.

Not sure where to begin. For the long time i have waited for a new glimpse of this series, it was definitely a dissapointment with that subject. It was along with other points way too short to justify it's long production period. Story wise it seems that the displayed scenes only took place in a time period of about 48 to 72 hours. This is in the manga just a couple of chapters. The plot did thus not develop much in this time. Speaking on the aesthetic queality, it was as expected pretty good. Almost nothing to point out there exept the (over)use of GCI with horse maneuvering. It leaves in the end something to be desired in the next upcoming series. The third installement of the now well established Attack on Titan 'franchise'. I was happy that it came out but less than before.
In accordance to my troubled opinion this had a couple of reasons. Attack on Titan is one of those animes that can tell almost nothing in a whole bunch of episodes. This is exactly the case with this season. There was not much in depth in the personal and worldy dialogue. And almost no action (remember when they where send out to their first battle as cadets and the slaughter that followed?). This is mainly why i found this particular season lacking. The thirst has been quenched but not as well as before. I can only hope that they improve on the next as we are getting closer to that basement and are on the verge of reclaiming lost human ground.

Another season of the know well known series. It felt this time (for me at least) not as hyped as it was a couple of years ago. Maybe it was because the season before was not that long ago (speaking in anime terms).
The series follows it's organic story into liberation and to get answers. The thing i will say it that you will get answers who were yearning to be known for seasons.
The characters are growing with knowledge but also in demeanor, you could say more mature. People will die in a re-conquest and war. Dealing with it is inherent to it.

I was not so sure what to expect when i started with this anime as Japanese always so strange things to Europe when it is semi-realistic in setting. The setting interested me somewhat as the real world equilvalent would be the country of Liechtenstein at the most eastern border of Switzerland. It ticks all the boxes: monarchy, German in language and a small military. The overall setting of the story is not that surprising although the artwork was very well done at times but could also be a bit sparse in other scenes. The story maybe overextended itself by taking too many problems to tackle than it could within the scope of twelve episodes. A bit more streamlining would have been welcomed. The characters where a bit bland and had no real rememberable qualities. All together is was enjoyable but not to a too great extent. The main point of the series was clearly: loyalty to king and country as the manifestation of the country itself.

Suzume no Tojimari
Another film by Makoto Shinkai, already a household name through Kimi no Na wa (Your Name) and Tenki no Ko (Weathering with You). With each film expectations rise. Watched the movie in cinema. This always helps with the general vibe and enjoyment.
The film starts off in Kyushu as did Your Name with a beautiful rendered countryside which is both realistic but also (maybe) idealised. But the film never shyes away from showing the rougher edges that still exist. Japan is not a wonderland where everything is neat or always tidy. It has it's forgotten and deserted places. These play a big role in this story. When Suzume cycles towards an average schoolday, she would never have guessed that a single meeting with a young stranger name Sōta would change her life. This meeting will give chase to her past but also impacts those around her and even those unknown to her. The mysterious door towards another world she dreamt about since childhood has something to with it. With a strange cat like thing popping up on the social media Suzume knows something has to do with her and the hunt begins. Throughout search, Suzume meets by accident (or providence) people who will help her in the way they can, even if this in unexpected ways! The pacing and the general flow of the film is well done and not jarring at the slightest. The film is full of humorous moments that will make you smile, maybe not by mouth but at least by hearth. In other moments the movie moves and gives a slight possible case of heartburn through the meaning of friendship, care and selfless service. As expected are in the movie subtle references to other works including earlier movies of Shinkai. A non exhaustive list of this: various Studio Ghibli works (Totoro, Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service) and Madoka Magika. The story creates an interesting thought about what we humans can and can't accomplish. We can't win against natural disasters which Japan is well acquainted with. This is one of the central themes of the film but shows this with a serious but lighthearted tone. All damage can be repaired over time and in the future. Only the death and loss of personal loved ones is the pain and emptiness that stays with us without ceasing. It only weathers with us as we grow as persons in age and understanding. Throughout our lives we meet new people that will make our life worth living and continuing, even if we argue or fight with them sometimes. In Your Name Shintoism was more overt involved throughout the story. Local legends and Shintoism is again part of this film but in a more subdued form. Never mentioned directly but only through actions and lore of forgone eras. The place many Japanese (contemporary and in earlier times) give towards the kami that dwell in the World we walk in. This gives an interesting dynamic when it comes to the many disasters Japan has faced, as it is their 'indigenous religion'. How are the kami involved? Are they maybe the perpetrators or are they more benevolent that try to help against that is not fully within their powers to stop? The movie shows that those with a clear and devoted heart, spurned on by the love and generosity of others can find understanding with that which dwells in the mountains, hills and forests. Very gladly advised to watch!

Kirito and Asuna have healed from their ordeals that comprise within that series. For another time strange things are happening with VR and it's derivatives, this at first does not concern Kirito and his group of friends, till some people start getting hurt.
What was also interesting was that Kirito was not so into the new Augma gear and is frustrated that it sometimes become between him and Asuna. A fresh take on the SAO franchise. From GGO it is a big step backwards to the roots of the first season.
Dropping Kirito in a familiar world without the connection to the outside, only by 'winning' he may regain a chance to get out of the virtual world.
The story starts somewhat slow but picks up speed after a while. A good change is the place of the felt emotion of the characters and the visual gore. The emotions between the characters is what drew me to the series in the first place. Although Kirito is not fighting for his real friends, he made new ones who are as much worth to be fought for.
Central themes are: what will happen when an imperfect human makes himself a God (deification), the true strength and meaning of memories and to face adversity without holding back and to trust in who put their trust in you.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this if you liked the first season of SAO. Looking forward to the next season as that it goes on where this season ends.

Tenki no Ko
Had the luck to watch it in cinema. An incredible experience almost on par with Five Centimeters per second. The first thing that shines from the first seconds as the film starts are the graphics and later the incredible realistic portraiture of Japan through little details like food, brands, buildings and the environment. This makes a deep immersion possible, which with a movie like this grips and holds you throughout the movie only letting reluctantly go when the credits roll. The story revolves around a teenager who arrives in Tokyo and firsthand experiences the hardships that come with his sudden arrival. You walk with him in his experience of sadness, hunger and loneliness but small acts of goodwill shine bright as flares of kindness. Through this he meets Hina, who will pivot his life into a new direction. From a close perspective we see that hard work (diligence) and relative freedom can mean for a teenager who was constrained by his hometown with all it's memories and stories. The film shows clearly and without restrain aspects of the closeness of Shintoism with the Japanese in general. This is commendable as it gives the narrative a deeper meaning through the naming of God in search for answers that partake in the question that there is something more between heaven and earth. Various very interesting themes that revolve around in the film (sometimes subtly): that nature goes betyond the manufacturability and controlability of man, the expectations of young adults and what society expects of them (especially those that feel that they can't answer these expectations), how 'faith' can accomplish feats that are unexpected and how relationships can (sometimes literally) shape the world you live in.

I had the privilege of watching the remastered Blu-ray version of the film. Especially the start of the film shows the stylistic simple but stunning surrounding of the landscapes and also the magnificence of the airships. The world is a clear mixture of steampunk, victorian housing and the new found marvel of the industrial revolution, combined with a sense of camaraderie of fellow laborers and townspeople. The story revolves around a young orphan who catches a girl that fell from the sky and is hunted.
The story revolves the impact of inherited destiny, human kindness and that manner of address could be meaningless if the person himself does not believe in it.

Tonari no Totoro
Had the opportunity to watch it remastered in blue-ray. Another classic but with a capital c for anime, as much as for example the Lion King is as for the classic Disney drawn movies. It is a wholesome movie about a family that moves to a rural area outside Tokio. The family has two small girls who are ecstatic about the move and can't wait to see what their new home and surroundings bring. Set in Japan after WW2 and in the 1950's where Japan is busy rebuilding itself again form the ground up. No drearyness of any of that kind in this film. It shows a content family with good parenting but with a small doubt about the mother who for the story stays in the hospital due to an unnamed illness. The girls find some strange black particles with eyes in their new house. These lead to the idea that there are some unknown beings out there. They found out that Totoro, a big fluffy bear- like animal with bunny ears lives next to them. In their childlike curiosity and kindness they form a bond with him. Totoro, unable to speak a single word in the film will hem however he can to return this in equal measure. One of the things that stood out to me are the references to Shintoism in the film, they are subtle but they are definately there. Many speculated what Totoro is and it answered often as a kami (a Shinto spirit or deity), but it's best to leave it to the imagination just as the two small girls do. Main themes in this film are: curiosity, reciprocity of kindness and to be unselfish towards others (as this in time of need will be returned without question). It is not strange that this film is the face of the Ghibli studios and to this date has a fanbase that has it very dear. Gladly and wholeheartedly must watch classic!

One of the most heart wrenching animes i have seen in a long while. It was to be expected when i started with the series. It was strange but at the same time comforting that i really could connect with the main protagonist. Her strict adherence to rules, orders and her unnatural way of showing no emotions was pretty familiar for me. Although not in the excess shown in the anime. This with the slow pacing of most intertwining smaller stories within the series made for at times some much needed comedic and almost unwatchable akwardness between the more serious parts. But every encounter she had was meaningful in it's own unique way. I have enjoyed this anime a great deal for the things mentioned above together with the brilliant artwork and solid opening score. It is already a favorite of mine. I would gladly advise this to most people but it needs to be said that not everyone enjoys this slow paced and emotion laden anime as much. The main dealings in this anime are: overcoming almost bottomless grief and sorrow, undying loyalty and learning that the human emotions are always there even if words and thoughts fall short of them.
