Boku wa Imouto ni Koi wo Suru

There's a reason incestual relationships are rarely taken seriously in anime. It's a hard subject to portray with sincerity, and if not handled properly can be the source of contention among the viewership. Boku wa Imouto runs into that exact problem doing a poor job of selling it's authenticity and even worse of providing the viewer with any meaningful takeaway from the topic as a whole in society.

The characters, to put it bluntly, are awful. Yori is a moody brat with rapist tendencies who repeatedly forces himself onto the person he claims to love most of all. Iku has no will of her own, ... given no personality type outside of jealousy and clinginess. We are never made to like the characters, and are merely swept along in their rapidly developing obsession. Boku wa Imouto also fails to provide the proper exposition for Yori's overwhelming desire for his sister. A childhood promise where he pinky swears to marry her isn't enough of a convincing argument. How he can go from vehemently rejecting her existence to suddenly forcing himself on her is unrealistic, even for anime.


The climax in all stories of this nature is the moment they are found out - whether by society or a mutual friend who walks in on them. Boku wa Imouto's version of this are inanimate statues in a church who Iku assumes means God hates her. None of their friends raise enough suspicion to threaten the relationship. One classmate ogles Iku, makes a rude joke about her, gets beat down by Yori, and then questions how close they are as if a brother doesn't naturally respond to his sister being made fun of. This isn't how you create tension.

Koi Kaze is a top comparison for this anime on MAL, which is akin to comparing Mars of Destruction to Neon Genesis Evangelion. Koi Kaze goes into so much greater depth, with much better sincerity shown from its characters and a far better resolution that you can never forget. Its disrespectful to even compare the two - THAT is how this type of subject matter should be handled.


It feels as though this was made only to show the result of incestual relationships, rather than the actual process, which is the most important aspect in making a good story of this nature.

Please don't bash me. It's my first review.

Anyway, the reason I rated this so poor is because I'm sick of cliche romance. It's not even romance, it's just a the strong desire to have sex. The story revolves around the stereotypical smart, popular(ish) anime guy who thinks his sister is hot. He doesn't even love her, he just wants her body.

Sex is fine, but my kind of sex is after marriage. Besides, these people are way too young! It just annoyed me to no end, and I could hardly stand it. I don't mean to spoil anything but the ending didn't satisfy me, so I ... read the manga for some dumb reason. Curiosity killed the cat, I guess. I just wanted to see how their relationship would work out.

However, after a few chapters of the manga, I was sick to death, and I dropped it. I'm actually not picky about my anime. I don't mind sex but I don't like it to be explicit, and I don't like it popping up here and there and everywhere. In this show, sex doesn't happen every two minutes, but there was a lot of close-call-sex (where they were about to have it) and an actual scene where they did have it. There's more sex and sex references in the manga, and sexual... themes. Sexual themes galore. What else can I say?

Ok well, onto the other things.


Story~
The story is flimsy, cliche, and altogether awful. Okay, it wasn't awful, just... average. I mean, if you took away the incest, what else would there be? Your same every day slice-of-life where they look into each other's eyes with that look of, "Oooh, sex." Basically the whole plot relies on the fact that they're brother and sister, and if you break that, it's just cliche and stupid. Of course, ALL incest anime relies on the... well, incest. But what really makes it a good plot is when the characters develop and actually love each other, and when it actually brings a tear to your eye, and it makes you realize just how hard it is for them to be in this kind of relationship. Boku wa Imouto ni Ko-- well, yeah, that freaking long title... anyway, it tries to delve deeply into how tough it is for these two to be related and have feelings for each other, but it doesn't delve deep enough. Maybe I'm heartless, but I didn't sympathize with them. The whole time I was muttering words of "Oh, drama, blah blah blah."


Art~
Typical shoujo art. Happy people, shiny hair and eyes, perfect bodies. Yay. sometimes though, the movement was awful, and the artist(s) failed at drawing a frame, so their body is suddenly longer or shorter or their eyes are too far apart, or their hair is suddenly longer then back to short. I wish I could say I liked the art, and I sort of did, but the occasional fail just threw me off.


Sound~
Good. Nothing to say here. I liked the sound, nothing to scream "LOVE" about it though, it was just good. It came at the right times (for the most part) and was sort of, well, pretty. The voice acting is okay too, I guess. I mean, it's cliche-sounding, but not bad.


Character~
In adventure anime, characters are very important. In fact, in every dang story in the world, characters are very. freaking. important. But in adventure anime, I'd say the plot matters just as much as the characters. With great characters and great plot, you have an amazing adventure. But...that's just that. Boku wa Blahblahblah is a *ROMANCE*. With a romance, the plot is basically non-existant-- it's the CHARACTERS that really matter. The characters make the romance, and they make it likable. But Boku...yeah you get it, basically, the characters are just cliche. In fact, they're not even cliche, they're just awful. It seems as if Iku is just a submissive little girl who will agree to anything just because she feels like she needs to. She's not likable, in my opinion, and the brother is just an idiot who wants sex. The side characters are just there for added drama, and the added drama doesn't work. All in all, that's all to say about these characters... they're just poorly formed. You can't have much character development in a really short show like this, but honestly-- do they have to be bad either?


Overall, this show is just not something I liked at all. Please don't hate me for saying this. you can vote me down all you want, but honestly, it's just a matter of opinion. Incest is fine for me, but this was just... no. If you like this kind of thing with cliche drama and... I don't know how to explain it, sexual tension? Then give this show a try. Actually, read the manga first it'll make more... sense.

Basically, it's just a matter of opinion, nothing more. I personally think there are different incest anime with better-formed characters and more interesting drama, but oh well.

You might imagine that an anime dealing sympathetically with incest would be quite original, deeply psychological, an enthralling drama...this series isn't any of those things. It is a shallow, pandering heap of rubbish. The unhappy couple are a moody, selfish, unsympathetic wretch and a revoltingly twee, thoughtless moeblob. Cynically presenting these character qualities as a double sexual fantasy really gets up my nose. Sexual fantasy characters need not lack genuine good qualities, but a pair constructed without a single one are particularly irritating. Their incestuous passion is never explained and barely analysed, giving the story the depth of a puddle and reducing the characters to ... parts in a sexual machine. The plot and especially the dialogue barely ever rise above cliche and the animation is entirely unoriginal.

Honestly, I hated this anime. This anime is just revolved around SEXUAL ATTRACTION between siblings. There is no love. Even though the title is translated to "I Love My Younger Sister", there is NO LOVE.

Story: The storyline was HORRIBLE. Like I said before, the title is "I Love My Younger Sister", but honestly, all he really wants is to have sex with her. Basically, the whole anime was how much he wanted to have sex with her. I felt no connection between them at all. The story itself did not take much originality. It probably wouldn't have taken a lot of time to ... think up of this plot.

Art: The art was okay. Like any other shoujo anime. There was nothing special.

Sound: Again, it was like any other anime. Nothing special. However, the acting sometimes seemed forced.

Character: The characters were built fairly well. NOT! They were horrible. The characters were shallow and unrealistic (Yes, I know it's fictional but still.).

Anyway, I certainly did not enjoy this anime. If you do not like incest things, I would DEFINITELY not recommend you to watch.

It tries a lot to be a serious story, which is likely the main appeal for most people who seek this out as a romance, but it often feels like a cringe fever dream. The characters are really generic, not only they have no depth, but they're morally questionable (and I'm not talking about the incest) and change their attitude wildly as the plot needs it; this in turn makes some scenes comical due to how contradictory their actions can be. Ironically, their parents are more likable than themselves.

The dialogue can be pretty dramatic and cheesy, it is on par with what you'd expect from ... a parodied Shakespeare tragedy in the background of a movie scene.

The art and sound are pretty neat, however.

This has to be worst thing I've ever watched, not even 5 minutes into the OVA and it gets weird.
The title is interesting because surely they're not incestuous, they are. The brother is so weird, he's overprotective and sexualises his sister to no limit. The title lies he doesn't love her, he wants her in a sexual way. The pair are the most boring and overdramatic main characters, they just boil down to what they are. INCEST. I don't know how either them think its good to want your sibling in a weird way let alone your twin.
Another thing is the god awful ... animation, I get it was made in 2005 and they might have not had the biggest budget but if the animation alone is not watchable don't bother making an OVA.
If you're not a degenerate, don't bother watching. It's just soft hentai with a large amount of incest.

Oh my what can I say about this. Just normal relationship with Yori and Iku even though they are siblings. The story is so cliched and boring and I feel that it is not right to have sex before marriage and it is even worse when it comes to siblings. Siblings should not have sex or get married. The art is very dull.

Now, moving on to the characters. Iku is really the most annoying person I came across in this anime. Her voice is so annoying which almost destroyed my ears. She is whiny and a crybaby. I just can't believe Mai Nakahara did annoying ... voices like Nagisa from Clannad, Rena from Higurashi even this character. There is nothing special about Yori, he is just bland.

Well there's not much to say here. I really cannot stand whiny and crybaby characters. Their voices are like chalkboard being scratched hard. I almost go deaf after hearing it. Not to mention they do not understand people at all.

There is nothing memorable about the music.

So I give this anime a 2/10.
