Ippon may be a lot older but these anime are extremely similar. Both anime feature a dedicated chef MC and similar cooking "face-off" battles. ungratefully, Ippon doesn't seem to be completed, yet i still find it extremly well-writing; the storyline of Chuuka Ichiban is greater with in-depth character and world-building, however, Ippon did this style of anime first. If you truly like Chuuka, you will adore Ippon and vice-versa.

Both Cooking Papa and Ippon Bouchou Mantarou are adapted from second generation (mid 80s) gourmet manga. While Ippon Bouchou Mantarou follows the traditional wandering chef polishing his skills trope, Cooking Papa broke new ground with slice of life cooking by a salaryman. Cooking Papa also pioneered the inclusion of recipes at the end of a chapter or episode, so if you are interested in trying the dishes at home, you can.

If you are interested in the history of the gourmet genre, Mister Ajikko is based on the first fully realized gourmet manga. It establishes the tropes of cooking battles and exaggerated reactions to eating delicious food. Ippon Bouchou Mantarou is adapted from the second generation of gourmet manga when more subdued reactions became the norm, but it continues the themes of competition and battling to perfect one's cooking.

From the second generation of gourmet manga (mid 80s), these anime give an idea about the usual tropes. Ippon Bouchou Mantarou hews more closely to the first generation with a wandering chef pursuing the perfection of his craft, whereas Oishinbo is known for making the shift from the focus on the craftsman to the focus on the critic evaluates food. Of course this is no surprise as Big Joe is the author of both the Ippon Bouchou Mantarou manga and the OG gourmet manga, Houchounin Ajihei.
