Viper's Creed

Viper's Creed was made in 2009 by AIC Spirits (A company with some good stuff but a pretty questionable history overall.) It was was created by Aramaki Shinji. It aired briefly in America, but was quickly canceled due to low ratings. Honestly, given the stuff that gets popular in America, I'm not sure if that's a good or a bad sign. So let's take a look at Viper's Creed and find out.

The story is pretty simple. Air and sea travel has been made impossible by a large-scale war. Cities have been isolated and contractors called Blademen have been hired by a foreign business to safeguard ... the city from bug mechs. A terrorist group with really nonsensical ideas called Hound is also causing problems and the Viper team finds itself in the middle of a conspiracy. The story does some things well. The setup is pretty interesting and, when you find out the nature of the conspiracy, a lot of the seemingly nonsensical elements do end up making some sense. But the story still has a couple major issues. Instead of developing their characters naturally in the narrative they have several episodes that barely connect to the main story in which they inundate you with backstory. Because that's much better than learning about a character naturally. The story is also pretty minimal, when they do get to the main plot what you actually get is a lot of action sequences with short bursts of story. The ending is also a load of crap, but I can't go into details about why without spoilers.

Let's move into the characters. To Viper's Creed's credit, they do try to develop the six major characters and it works, they are three-dimensional characters. The major problem is with the supporting cast, which is composed largely of one-dimensional characters and the antagonists who barely get any motivation. Another problem is that some of the major characters are just unsympathetic. The main example of this being Haruki who goes beyond naive and into the realm of being a complete moron. The worst part is that his complete idiocy is barely questioned.

Let's talk about the art for a moment. The machines in this look really good. The action scenes are really intense and well done. That being said, they do some bizarre things with faces and the backgrounds are pretty lazy most of the time.

The voice acting is good. Toyoguchi Megumi, Kuroda Takaya, Minagawa Junko and several others do well in their roles. The one real exception is Akiyama Nana who gives a rather uninspired and flat performance. I haven't heard her in anything else so I couldn't tell you whether this was the direction, inexperience or just a lack of ability at expressing emotions. I'm not even going to bother speculating on it. Then there's the music, a lot of it just doesn't work with the series. It's just too soft and serene for the action-packed content.

The yuri factor is a 1/10. There's no yuri in this.

My final rating for Viper's Creed is a 6/10. It does have some major issues, but it also has some great characters and great action scenes. If you can handle the story issues and the more minor issues then it is a decent watch.

Despite the low viewer rating and the first review here for Viper's Creed, I absolutely loved this anime and I'm really hoping for a sequel.

Story: 10--a good story, especially for so few episodes. Yes, the general storyline is a classic one, but it's a storyline that works, which is why it's been used so many times.

Art: 8--at the beginning I remember thinking that the art could have used a few more frames to smooth out some of the movements, but overall it's animated in the usual style for the newer anime, and the action scenes are done really well. They knew how ... to create tension with the visuals as well as the storyline and sound effects by zooming in on something and omitting the focus. Really keeps you watching.

Sound: 9--consistently throughout the series, I was amazed at the background music. It set the tone perfectly for each scene without making the view actually notice it until the director wanted the viewer to notice. Also, the ending song is my newest favorite (will be listening on repeat for another month). Sound effects were good overall, though most are the usual mech anime sounds (hydraulics, gunshots, metal, etc.).

Character: 10--Great character development. They structure the story so that you really invest in the characters, even though the anime is so short. Very realistic characters, flaws and all. At times you want to hate them, at times you want to just hug them 'til they suffocate. (o.O moe?)

Enjoyment: 9--absolutely loved (almost) every minute of the anime. I usually go for happy anime (Shugo Chara anyone?), and too much strife mid-series can permanently turn me off of a series. Great beginning, great end, it's the middle you have to watch out for. So, I docked one point, but still, it's a 9/10.

Overall: 10--period.

Well..let's see...if not for the plot at least for the awesome art this anime deserves a shot.

Story:...nothing special or outstanding but it was edible ....not very full of cliche-es but like i said nothing special.For 12 episodes i think u can resist cause it's worth a shot.A few turn-of-events but nothing special..although i liked the end..u will understand why...i gave it a 6..for fair

Art:Outstanding and first-class..that's this series strong point..although there were some scenes that were repeated cause the designers were lazy to recreate them....but it is very good and it gets a 10

Sound: pretty decent..nothing special but still pretty good..gets a 7

Character: Well...12 ... episodes don't really help character development so i didn't really get to get close to the characters..but still it was pretty fair.My fave character was Haruki..nop..IS Haruki....and of course that is mainly because Jun Fukuyama does his voice..:X..but i kinda liked the shounen too gets a 6 for fair

Enjoyment: Well..i expected a little more..but..i guess it was ok..8 for enjoyment

Overall: 8...i wanted to give a 7 but i am a sucker for great art and animation with action scenes so i gave it an 8 instead...it's worth a shot..try it out.

Viper's creed is a definitely an anime that needs more attention and I am surprised that it is so unpopular after watching it myself. Though not a master in any main areas you would rate an anime I feel it does not have any huge weak points.

Story: 7/10

The story is based 8 years after a major war that has left with most of the earth submerged under water. The main characters are a group of former mercenaries who are part of the Viper Unit of a private army. Their job consist of taking out threats from rebels and protect the city with the use of ... their mechs.

Viper's creed is broken up into 2 halves. The first focusing on more of an introduction of the plot where each main character gets their share of screen time so we can truly understand and relate to our mercenaries. The second half is where things really kick in story wise as we go through an action packed and sometimes emotional joyride.

Art: 7/10

Animation looks solid enough. Action scenes are well done, loaded with bullets and rockets and explosions all over the place. I did notice that their wasn't much going on in terms of the background and there are a few re used animation frames here and there but nothing to really complain about.

Sound: 6/10

Opening song is nothing to really pay attention too. The ending song I felt did not fit this type of anime at all but near the ending with what unfolds as the series goes on I felt it was actually a good match. Music used throughout the anime is good enough and usually fits with the scenes going on.

Characters: 7/10

One thing I actually really like is how the characters were handled in this series. Each one of the main characters of the Viper Unit get an episode dedicated to themselves in the first half. Here we get some back story on them and learn to see exactly why they act in certain ways. On the outside you would just think these guys are just money hungry mercenaries fighting for riches but they all have some form of back story that makes you understand who they really are. What I've noticed is that by the end of the series I really didn't have a favorite character or one I really disliked. I would think that is because of how each character was handled and used by the studio. It was done in a way that no one truly out shined the other, they all got their moment in the spotlight.

Enjoyment: 8/10

Definitely enjoyed this show. If you are a fan of the mecha and military settings I definitely recommend you give it try if you are looking for something to watch.

Overall: 7/10

Good, solid series overall. As mentioned earlier there is no area in Viper Creed that truly stands out compared to other anime you may watch but it also doesn't have any extreme weak points being exposed. With only 12 episodes you can run though it on a Sunday afternoon and experience this action packed ride.

what really makes this anmie shine , in my books besides its great art sound and action is how well it develops the characters.
Whilst the action is non stop and the story's not bad at all , its how we see the characters develop as the peels are slowly removed that make it such a delight.

By series end , you have a definite feelings for the characters and cant helped but be touched by their plights. Sign of great writing.

The Op and CP and so good as well , ... worth tuning in for that alone.

First off i wanna say that this is a great anime, it really it. i do like the story, tho it starts off slow in the beginning but it picks up at the middle. I really didnt like how it was a short anime series tho, it could have had alot more if it was a longer running anime. But over all its a 9/10, so it is a good anime to watch in my opinion.

As someone whose favorite anime and manga usually involve boys love, bishonen, demons, vampires, or any combination of those things, I did not expect to enjoy Viper's Creed as much as I did as it definitely has none of those things. I initially put this show on as background noise as I worked on other things but I soon found myself invested in the story and characters, as well as being sucked into the thrilling action.

Story - 7

The story isn't particularly unique but there are some twists and turns. The middle few episodes seem a bit tonally off at times and are a little harder ... to get through when binging the series but I do understand that they were somewhat necessary to provide backstory for the supporting characters. The final few episodes were very exciting with a satisfying conclusion that fit the build up from the beginning of the show.

Art - 7

Visually the show looks good. The action scenes are animated well and the CGI looks better than many shows that rely on it today, over a decade later. Character designs are distinct and recognizable.

Sound - 7

Unfortunately, I am not the type to pay close attention to or critique sound in anime unless it is particularly awful or outstanding. Nothing stood out to me on either side of the spectrum for this show. I watched the English dub and think the performances were fine. I liked the voice distortion effects when characters were speaking in their mechs.

Character - 8

Viper's Creed did a very good job of creating characters that the viewer can become invested in, despite the series' short length. Most of the characters did not feel one-note or throw-away as many do in 12-episode series. Their motivations are clear and the viewer gets a good understanding of the events that made them the way they are. If this was a longer series, I would probably have grown more attached to them as I learn more about them but there's only so much that can be done in 12 episodes.

Enjoyment - 9

Overall, I think this is a good show that fans of anime in general - not just sci-fi - would enjoy if they give it a chance. Nothing ground-breaking but certainly entertaining and enjoyable. The final few episodes had several twists, reveals, and non-stop action. As mentioned previously, this is not my usual genre so I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it, enough to write this review at 1am to help balance out all the negative reviews and ratings.

I've not seen many bad anime in my lifetime but this is for sure one of them. While it's for sure not the bottom of the barrel by any means it's easily the worst anime that I have personally seen.

The story makes no sense. Nothing is explained. The main characters and organization just fight generic robots on highways in their mech-cars/bikes. It's like the show can't decide if it wants to be post-apocalyptic or be futuristic sci-fi so what we actually get is something generic and uninteresting.

The artstyle and soundtrack is fine for its time. The OP is the best thing about the series and ... even then you'll barely remember it after the years pass.

The characters are absolutely bland and dull. You don't have much of a reason to care about anyone or anything in this universe.

Overall I only watched the show one day when I was really sick and didn't really care what was on the television. If nothing else it's at least memorable for being bad. Not like that is a good thing. 3/10.
