Pokemon (2023)

In a world filled with strange yet majestic creatures known as Pokémon, a new adventure begins! Hailing from the pristine region of Paldea, the timid Liko travels to the Kanto region to attend the Indigo Academy and become a Pokémon trainer—a person who forms relationships with Pokémon and trains them to participate in battles. Soon, Liko acquires Nyahoja, a fickle Grass-type cat Pokémon, as her first partner.

Prior to Liko's transfer to Kanto, her grandmother gives her a uniquely patterned and gleaming pendant as a protective charm. However, an enigmatic organization—The Explorers—seems to know a secret about the pendant and nearly succeeds in stealing it from Liko. Fortunately, she is rescued by the Rising Volt Tacklers, a group of adventurers led by a Lizardon-riding trainer named Friede.

After a series of encounters with The Explorers, Liko decides to join Friede's team, accompanying him and his crew members on a grand journey across the regions. Along the way, they aim to unravel not only the mysteries of the world of Pokémon, but also the power that resides within her pendant.

Hella funny and cute.
I must admit, I like this a little more than the original Pokémon series. Why? Ash's ambition was "I want to be the best".
Liko's ambition is more reliable and understandable. A kind-hearted kid that just lives at the moment and decides day by day when to route to go till she finds the thing she really wants to fight for. Besides an interesting story, it also has some good old live lessons to teach. Positivity, laughter, and uplifting. And it's hilarious and cute AF. Just look at them, those little meow meows and wuff wuffs... owo

I wholeheartedly recommend this show to any longtime fans of the franchise (either the games, the manga, or the original anime)

As someone who hasn't watched the original Pokemon series in over 10 years (I fell off the series between the Advanced Generation and Diamond and Pearl seasons, otherwise only catching brief glimpses of episodes from Black and White onward), this has been my absolute favorite piece of Pokemon media from the entire series so far.

It looks graphically beautiful, especially with the battles, and takes mechanics like weather, abilities, and unique effects of moves into consideration, which is a huge plus in my book. While there ... are occasional shenanigans during some of the battles, I love that they utilize mechanics from the actual games in their strategies.

Probably the best part about the show is that it's generally non-formulaic. There some episodes which just feature "monster of the week", but for the most part, the protagonists are following a unique story that isn't as simple as "collect 8 badges, then tournament battle, repeat". Even when the next goal appears to be formulaic (there is a segment of "obtain certain number of special objects" during the story), they find ways to make each encounter feel fresh and new, with close to zero throwaway filler episodes. Every episode moves the story along in some way, unlike the original Pokemon anime.

It helps that the series doesn't have to take place in any particular region; with their flying ship (the Brave Asagi), they can travel between regions in an instant. The best part is the amount of detail put into these regions, when they're in a named location, you can actually recognize those locations, like Artazon featuring the Sunflora statues, or the Whirl Islands with their signature whilrpools, or the crystal pool from Kitakami, there are so many visual references that I love.

I also love that the villains are treated as the actual threats that they are, not just comic relief. While they *can* be funny, when they show up to battle, they are treated with the respect they deserve, and it actually feels meaningful when the protagonists overcome the odds (because they are at a disadvantage, more often than not). The villain's story is also intriguing, a mystery that slowly reveals itself over time.

The protagonists also visibly improve over time, beginning with little to no battle sense, occasionally failing but learning from their mistakes, and utilizing more interesting strategies after each and every encounter. Their evolutions feel earned, and new moves developed as a result of their strategy, which is super interesting and unique! Considering the villains remain mostly stagnant, it's awesome to see them go from struggling with every move, to fighting on nearly even ground.

There are some complaints that could be made about the show, such as Liko getting preferential treatment for the majority of the show, especially during the first couple of arcs (though she *is* the most primary main character), and some of her early victories feeling a bit unearned; I still feel like they make up for it in the last few arcs, with each of the other two main characters getting plenty of time to shine, with their own wins under their respective belts. Personally, this isn't enough for me to drop my rating, since I still found it highly entertaining, week after week, but it might put off some people.

Overall, this show does not feel like it was made purely for kids; there's more than enough here to entertain Pokemon fans of any age, with unique and interesting variety of characters, and an engaging plot to follow along with. There are even some relatively serious and tense moments where the protagonists are set back in some major ways, including two rather solemn cliffhangers (especially the one at the end of the most recent major arc).

So yeah, it's pretty cool, 10 thumbs up!

Here's a unique review, coming from someone who genuinely doesn't care who the protag is. Ash was cookie cutter and the fact he got to star in like 20+ seasons is beyond me. It's a show about magical monsters, how did they manage to make it revolve around 1 person?!

So that's where I'm left with this. I went in thinking, "Oh nice! They're finally going to change the story formula and make use of the franchise" "We're finally going to get something like Scarlet Wings or Origins, fleshing out the world itself!"

And that's why I stopped watching, I got my hopes up.

It's just female ash, ... with weed cat, constantly making up her own emotional baggage to spend 15+ minutes an episode to "bravely push through". Writing gets a 1/10, all character personalities, ALL of them 1/10, the only positive I can give is the visuals. Show looks great but I have no idea who their target audience is or why they would even make this.
