Bartender:Kami no Glass is one of the many shows I randomly chose to watch at the start of the season and it was a welcome surprise,Its very slow paced in the best way possible, becoming a great show to watch if you just want to relax and have something,which is typical of a slice of life, but something about this one was uniquely meditative. If you're on the fence or don't wish to commit the time to a full season, watch the ... first two episodes and see how you feel.
The show is paced in a semi episodic format, so if you wish to take it slow you wont find yourself lost or confused where the story is going. The first few episodes are especially soothing to watch, the show thrives in its atmosphere of the Tokyo nightlife or the calming lights of the bar. With the latter half of the show focusing more on the characters inner struggles and developments, which was more satisfying to see than i expected it would. Though as much as I loved the pacing, the mid season episodes kind of dragged a bit, trying to bridge the gap between what the stories they wish to conclude in the latter half and retaining the status quo of the first half.

Each character is well designed both in terms of their character and their design, everyone in this show has their own charm and I love it, I with many of the side characters feeling equal to the main characters in terms of development

Visually the show is slightly above average, unfortunately it suffers from classic issues with many anime like stiff shifting of posing and still drawings with only mouths flapping, which is common for slice of life, just still disappointing. But behind the bar movements are snappy and dynamic, really feels like their time was spent perfecting every scene in which a drink is made, almost like and alcoholic Delicious in Dungeon. Just watch (and listen) to anyone in this show using a cocktail shaker, its so satisfying.

Overall, This is a great show and well worth checking out, its unique,mature and therapeutic. Edenhall is more than willing to serve you with something to soothe your soul.

'Bartender: Kami no Glass' is what you call a type of slice-of-life anime called iyashikei (癒し系), meaning you watch it at the end of a busy day in order to relax, or even be 'healed.'

Bartender (2024), to distinguish it from Bartender (2006), follows top bartender Sasakura Ryuu. He is trying to create the ultimate healing drink called the 'Glass of God' or 'Kami no Glass'. Will he succeed? Also, Kurushima Miwa is trying to recruit him to be her family hotel's bartender. Will she succeed?

Unlike the earlier adaptation of Bartender (2006), it seems to adapt the manga more closely. To what extent it does or ... to what extent it doesn't, I have no idea. Suffice it to say that there's some semblance of a story that goes from one episode until the last instead of the original adaptation's episodic nature.

Whilst the 2006 Ryuu appeared to be a god-tier character, we are shown his flaws and thus feel more humanised. Sure, some stories in 2006 appear as minor parts of certain episodes, but how they approach things is different. 2006 is all about psychological healing, but in 2024 it's just a part of it. In 2006, the setting was mostly in Eden Hall, but in 2024, Ryuu often goes outside Eden Hall. As a consequence, we also meet other bartenders and their struggles. We also meet Ryuu's mentor, which is what's nice about it.

The animation of 2024 is of higher quality than 2006. However, as much as I recommend anybody watch 2024, I recommend that people watch 2006. Both are a complementary experience, and it's not an either-or. 2024 for a more complete story, but 2006 for a much better vibe. Even though 2006's animation quality sucks, its cinematography is superb and more than makes up for it.

The final score for this new adaptation is 7/10. My initial score for Bartender (2006) was 7/10, but I have to upgrade it to 8/10 because of the two adaptations, I will likely rewatch Bartender (2006).

In light of having finished the new adaptation, I am upgrading the score of Bartender (2006) from 7/10 to 8/10.

I recommend watching the new adaptation. It has better animation and looks better than the 2006 adaptation. It's more faithful to the manga, and Ryuu's back story is explored more. So if you want some form of story, the 2024 adaptation is better.

That said, the vibe of the 2006 anime is better as well as the OP and ED are bangers. This 2006 anime along with Frieren, Flying Witch, and now Aria have made me realise that I like iyashikei slice of life. Iyashikei literally means healing, and the 2006 anime focuses more on healing whatever psychological ailments each customer of Eden Hall had.

Don't get me wrong. The 2024 adaptation is good too. It's not an either/or because both are complementary. If we're talking about what induces the most emotions from the viewer and what I will likely rewatch in the future, I prefer the 2006 version and I hope you get to that conclusion too.

This drink reeks of old man. It has the old school writing maturity from 2 decades ago or more. Sorry, whoever wrote this work, but you really reek of old man.
Episodic formula is very prevalent in older shows, I believe. It's easier, shorter, flexible and delivers the punch fast. But of course, we want a major plotline to anticipate the final punch. I think... this anime run kinda fumbled on the last major punch. The ending isn't bad, but I didn't really go crazy either.

A lot of the stories always have an old man yapping his ideologies and beliefs that comes in the ... shape of Sasakure Ryuu, a handsome and robot polite young man. If I were a teenager, I would go "Wise words, old man," and go this is deep af bruh. But I'm past that age, and have seen enough of this kind of delivery to anticipate the catch. So in my view, the whole anime constantly has an opinionated nagging dialogue, no matter how roundabout it tries to spin it.

That's not the fatal point, however. The true problem that this anime fails to excite me is the lack of conflict. I feel... all the questions presented to the viewers are too simple and easy to answer, or rather, Sasakure Ryuu always answer them quickly without fail. So I don't really have the chance to brew in the bitterness before I taste the sweet aftertaste. I think it needs more morally challenging topics or devastating tragic tales. It's just too light to be anything distinctive or memorable.

You want something light while not being overly hahahappy. Sure... Unfortunately, this is not my glass of god.

This is an anime I started on a whim,I didn’t really know what it was about and only read the synopsis and I was like yea why not give it a try and boy I was glad I gave it a chance, it’s one of those gems you find in the rough,it’s a beautiful story with a very good script and very real characters and it kinda has this whole vibe and setup that makes you actually feel relaxed and just enjoying the smooth ride,no exaggeration no trying to impress you too hard no overdoing it in anyway and that’s what I love about it ... the most!

Note: If you are a shounen anime fanboy looking for action and fights and whatnot…. DON’T WATCH THIS! You will probably see it as a boring and slow anime. And you won’t even have to read the rest of my review. End of story.

If you are someone looking for a good story….
story wise I won’t go through the details but it touches down on the different kind of personalities you can see both in a bar and in real life including the bartender (main character) himself going into a page of their life each and it kinda shows you different bars showing you that this is not just a theatrical enclosed setup where people leave and go and it kinda makes you look at life in a more positive perspective in a subtle way, it leaves you with a lot of knowledge about cocktails and alcohol and one very important lesson among many which is that drinks are not just stuff to make you forget your shitty day but something that should be served to soothe the soul which is something lots of people needs to learn nowadays.
Animation,music,direction and design aspects of the anime itself wasn’t something to leave you in awe but it’s definitely far from bad which in my own opinion a little bit above average and that is not a bad thing as the story doesn’t need really much of an artistic support it just needs everything to fit into place.
In the end I love it and I recommend it for those who are looking for a beautiful Lofi story.

Note:I haven’t watched the old version of this anime and it might be even better (?) but I am not doing a comparison since this review is for first timers like me not ones who watched the old version.

It was a great anime despite being very simple, showing how there are variations of drinks, each character was well constructed, conveying charisma, both Sasakura and the other Bartenders were excellent despite each one having a type of quality and defect, as in Chen's case, but everyone They were developed, I heard there was another bartender anime before this one but I never saw it so maybe I'll watch it another time.
Unfortunately, this beautiful work that is not just about drinks, but also teaches things about life, has ended. I honestly didn't expect much from this anime at first, but it ended up really surprising ... me!

It's a significant improvement from the older version of the show. Story is somewhat the same but significantly less convoluted. It's no high quality art deserving of a place in palace of famed shows, but it's entertaining enough. This time around characters and their stories are easier to follow and whole show gives off Isekai Shokudou vibe, except it's not meals but drinks this time.

While it gets narcissistic at times with the whole experience of making and tasting drinks luckily it doesn't overstay its welcome and background stories for all kinds of different cocktails are interesting to listen to if you are into that kind ... of stuff. Animation and sound are both great, but not the best. Characters are well acted and feel very human, which is much needed in anime shows lately.

All in all, it's a slow moving show about drinks and cocktails with well built characters and world they reside in. Don't expect more than this and you won't be disappointed. I am watching it to relax and learn few things about some drinks. Recommended if you are looking for something slow like this and relaxing.

This is one of those types of anime that focuses on moments of exposition about some topic, drinks and beverages, and the bartending role in this case, while trying to create some kind of story around those moments of exposition, and i don't think it worked, actually most of those animes don't work, unless they don't make it all about exposition, and this one failed miserably at that.

There are lots of anime that do this kind of formula in interesting ways, and several other that commit the same mistake. Mostly often they over focus on the exposition topic, being food, science, etc; and leave it ... lacking in any other aspect of story, character development and world building, creating some repetitive routines and becoming stale and boring very fast.

A big one that does this well it's Doctor Stone, having its moments of exposition, but relying on the actual now and then of the story, even when focused on the scientific development. Another great one is Paripi Koumei, aka "Ya Boy Kongming!", related to the topics of music/entertainment shows management, mixed with an strategist of the 3 kingdoms era helping a young star on her career; A last good one is Thermae Romae Novae, even tho it wasn't that well received, it focuses on the comedy and overreaction of the main protagonist when dealing with modern designs and architecture of Thermas, without creating long moments of tedious explanation and talking.

That all said, Bartender: Kami no Glass still have another great problem, it lacks emotion. Almost every character feels stale and lacks the proper facial expression for the scenes and moments they are acting in, that's an even bigger problem when the anime already don't have an interesting hook in the story, and the exposition about drinks and bartending don't do that well of a work when mixed in with the story.

The mystery of who could enter next in Isekay Shokudou, and the overreaction when people ate things in Shokugeki no Souma did a better work, even when getting strongly repetitive and stale, feeling a lot more immersive and interesting than the boring inexpressive way that this anime does this formula, all because of the characters personality and the general aura of these shows, this is even more ironic when the Bartender says something about "your drink lacking personality". Just a Mid Class disappointment...

I was looking forward this series so much since I loved the 2006 version. However, it was a let down. Yes the graphics are better but the whole romanticizing a "bartender" and the side stories, were so cliche and lacked the depth of the original one. Also it supports the idea that you need to be the "best" in order to validate what you do, which is ridiculous. Tons of people have won prizes or achieve high-level of educations, but they lack common sense, making them useless. When you do things because you actually love them, that makes you the best, because you are ... doing it for your own gain and not because what others will say about you. I hate this mentality of power over craft. A lot of people can BS but just a few can actually do. Sadly the BS usually wins in this society. I also despise people who "always get what they want", imposing your will into others despite their feelings makes you an ass. Respects goes both ways. The original series on 2006 was centered on the craft and how the bartender helped people, but this one is more on background stories, which are LAME and so incredibly SAPPY. It is ridiculous overall. Anyway, it is ok if you have the time to waste, but definitely a let down.

This anime hits right on the frustrated dreams of being a Bartender

The premise of bar stories usually catches my attention, so I blindly trusted and decided to watch this anime just after reading its name and synopsis. The best thing about this anime is knowing the story of each person who passes through the doors of Edenhall. It is always interesting to meet the people who come to a bar, not in search of a party, but of relief. How Sasakura, the protagonist, used the drinks, story and ingredients to give a sermon to the customers was fantastic. They are sermons that never feel pretentious, ... as Sasakura seems like a person who has had a hundred years of experience while appearing to be in his 20s.

The setting of this anime was too good, the whole aura that Edenhall exuded, the lighting, the sound everything was positioned in a way that was so calming for both the customer and the viewer. Furthermore, this place had the power to envelop you in any type of story that was told within these 4 walls. As for the episodic stories, there is nothing to complain about this beautiful anime.

On the other hand, the part where it does falter a lot is in this main plot of the Cardinal Hotel staff trying to convince Sasakura to work with them. This plot feels uncomfortable, because Sasakura always looks for a kind way to reject them, but rather than finding valid reasons, they simply end up pushing him so that in one way or another, the protagonist relates to the people and the type of work he will do within of the hotel. On repeated occasions, Sasakura says that this environment is not for him, but even so, the script tries to make this happen, even if it goes against the will of its protagonist.

The Edenhall ending is a bit disappointing, but I don't want to go into too much detail to avoid spoilers. It is an anime that has a lot of value for its episodic stories, but at the same time it tries to be ambitious by telling a main story throughout its 12 chapters and that cannot end it in a satisfactory way. Despite all this, I still strongly recommend this anime, since each story that was told is unique and it is just a matter of taking your time to know which one you can identify with.

This show is quite something. To open, there is the obvious - this show highlights, likely accidentally, much of the crises and stress embedded in Japanese work culture. In this sense, it is clear why the show takes place where it does - a cozy bar in the corner of a larger building - and why the main character is written as he is - a laid-back master of his craft. The most exciting thing about this story is the narrative's flexibility - it is less about alcohol and how cool it is to be drunk and more about the glory of Third Places - ... how people need a place to relax and build a community outside of work or home. In this sense, I would likely be less conflicted if the show were about, say, a massage parlor - minor would have to change, But with what we have...

The show's strong understanding of the reality of bartending is evident, and this can make bartenders feel acknowledged and respected. Despite some very well-animated sequences and quite a good soundtrack, the show seems to cater to demographics that might be actively hurt by its message. It is cheers for the modern generation - selling your community and belonging in a bottle. And while its presentation is powerful, I worry that the people most receptive to its message - those who are searching for the community during a rough patch in their lives or working a dead-end job, would be better spent considering a coffeeshop or videogame cafe, rather than an establishment peddling a highly addictive product.

For those seeking a soothing and healing piece of animation, this show is a solid recommendation. However, it's important to note that it's a meditation on the nature of community that doesn't fully explore the consequences of building a community around alcohol. If you're comfortable with this theme, the show could be a thought-provoking watch.

- Good opening.
- Okay soundtrack and animation.
- Relaxing to watch, mainly because of the main character's vibe.
- I love how the bartender's role in society is portrayed.
- Interesting topics are discussed and explored, like suicide and change.
- The passion for cocktails is well transmitted and accurate, very similar to Food Wars.
- Main characters is good, supporting characters are not, except from Kitakata and the cigarette couple. All of them are not well written, though.
- A lot of random moments that don't really fit the story and are not developed further.
- A good amount of moments are just straight up generic and boring to watch.

Overall, ... it's not bad, it's fine. Wouldn't recommend, but also wouldn't stop you from watching.

in this anime, it is quite different from the previous anime in 2006. The story in this anime is more open world, they visit everywhere and really explain life as a bartender. This story is more slice of life, but there are fewer customers visiting than the previous anime. It also tells the story of the Main Character Bartender. Overall, I like both anime, but the previous anime has a more personal impact. But the atmosphere is indeed the same as the previous anime, it can also feel the privacy of a bar, to explain the lives or memories of regular customers ... at Eden Hall

Character (8) :
I also like the characters in this anime, there are changes in each character too. For example, Ryuu, the main character of the bartender. He feels like he wants to be Kami no Glass, really ambitious. Very different from the previous anime, then the characters in the previous anime... the story is told in the same plot but with more depth. so we can see the characters in more depth.

Visual (9) :
The visuals are clearly better than the previous anime, this visual is more sharper in this anime. The animation is also good so far and the movement of cocktail making techniques, environments, etc

Audio (8) :
The opening & ending are okay, I liked it better in the previous anime. Then the OST used for each scene is also good. but for the audio, I prefer the previous anime, because it's really jazzy and the OST touches my heart, it feels like I'm really in a private bar and being given a mandate.

Edenhall is more than a bar; it’s a sanctuary where these memories are preserved, trapped like fireflies in their corresponding frames of time. The bartender, Ryuu Sasakura, acts as a guide, ... gently coaxing these memories to the surface with the perfect cocktail for each soul who seeks solace. The stories woven around these drinks remind us that our experiences—joys, regrets, triumphs, and heartbreaks—are worth savoring, just like the finest liquor.

This profound perspective on drinking is something I’ll carry with me. It transforms every drink I partake in into more than just a refreshment; it becomes a moment to reflect, rejoice, and embrace the tapestry of memories that define us. Through Bartender, I’ve come to see that the act of drinking is not about escaping reality, but about finding a deeper connection to it, one glass at a time.

When a manga receives multiple adaptations, there's always the fear that they will retread the same ground in a redundant way. Thankfully that's not the case here. The 2006 Bartender anime was made partway through the manga's run, but the manga was long finished by the time Glass of God went into production. This is evident in the different approaches the two adaptations take to the source material, both equally valid and interesting.

Bartender 2006 was very episodic. Each episode focused on the life of one customer, what brought them to encounter bartender Ryu's bar, the history of the drinks Ryu serves the customer, and how ... those specific drinks relate to (and sometimes solve) problems in the customer's life. The titular glass of god refers to Ryu's ability to understand his customers and select exactly the right drink for them at that moment. In the 2006 version, Ryu was a near infallible, Holmes-esque character who could pick up on the subtlest clues about a customer to figure out what troubled them.

Bartender: Glass of God offers a different perspective. It takes us behind the counter to focus on the bartenders themselves, their different approaches to their work, and what compels them to do the job. It follows a series-long story about a hotel owner's attempts to convince Ryu to work at his bar. Ryu, despite his reputation, comes across as less experienced than in the 2006 show. He makes mistakes at times and is haunted by mistakes he made in the past. It all builds into a story arc that fully resolves within this single cour. This pacing generally works, though Ryu's encounter with a particular customer in the final episode (the final boss, essentially) feels rushed and lacking in the tension it needed.

Aside from that, it's a solid show. Where some remakes try to one-up their predecessor, Glass of God seems to frame itself as a companion piece. The few story moments that overlap between them are handled quite differently, and on the whole the shows offer two distinct flavours that complement each other.

This series ends up with the feeling of a good bar: warm and inviting. There’s a genuine sense of connection that forms over the course of the series, though it’s notable that throughout its run, there’s also a sense of distance. That’s not an easy balance to strike, but I think the series does it well, finding ways for the bartenders to interact with their customers that still leaves the bar between them, as both a physical presence that imposes distance and as a sort of self-imposed barrier meant to shield both sides of the bar from the other.

The series never lets us forget ... that we’re dealing with humans throughout, but we get very distinct insights into how each side of the bar feels. Customers may not be here to be vulnerable, but they are rendered vulnerable by the incisive reads into their emotional states that come from the bartenders. The bartenders, at least when they’re at work, always try to act like they’re present to help the customers that come in their door, not necessarily to relate to them. Those that are considered among the best are the ones who are most capable of imposing that distance, and I think the series is at its best in showing how each of them manages (or fails to manage) it. Ryuu Sasakura has clearly become quite expert at it, though cracks start to show when he’s off the clock and doesn’t give himself a chance to process how he’s feeling. Kyouko Kawakami is still trying to establish that distance, but in finding herself more often on the other side of the counter, she also gains more from the experience of seeing how others manage it. Kelvin Chen wants desperately to be the kind of person who can stand behind that counter, but in his desperation to prove himself, he often misses those points of connection and struggles to reestablish them.

I love seeing the contrasts between their styles and personalities, and that’s no more apparent than when they’re mixing drinks and we get to see the various reactions they experience. No character in this show is perfect – there is little sense that any of these bartenders has truly made it in the end, even though many of them succeed in a wide variety of ways. There’s always something to learn, and they are humbled on numerous occasions. Still, the main delight of the show is seeing the beautiful drinks they craft and getting an understanding of why they were chosen. I feel like I need to rewatch this show at a bar and just be ordering at least the central drink of each episode to experience it along with these characters, though that sounds like a good way to get absurdly drunk.

There’s just a lot to appreciate about this series, so… why I am I left feeling empty by it? Part of that may have to do with how abbreviated many of these experiences can be. The series thrives on its recurring characters, yet so many flow into and out of the story without getting more than a drink and some wise words. In a sense, that’s more accurate to the experience: not everyone is a regular, after all. Still, it does leave some of those experiences feeling less than. I also feel that following Ryuu, while certainly not bad, does leave much of the more emotional moments feeling a little dry. He has clearly been affected by his past, but he shows almost none of it, and when confronted with a moment that appears similar to his prior trauma, it feels like it passes us by too quickly and with little note. The central narrative of this is an attempt to recruit him to a newly minted bar and, while it does get resolved, it also ends up feeling a bit silly that it took a whole season to get there.

This is the kind of show that I can admire very easily, but still leaves me wanting. It has a lot of good ideas, but I’m just not sold on the execution as much as I want to be. Still an easy recommendation.

From the "weak to the strongest" remarkable points in [Bartender]

Protagonist Introduction
In the first episode he is presented as someone who is clumsy, they want to introduce him as someone who is so focused on the job of Bartender that he doesn't know anything about the outside elements, like the use of technology, but after the first episode this is forgotten that it happened and it doesn't happen again in a similar way.

Adult Cast
One of the anime where the adults really behave like adults, don't expect dramatic moments or spottiness that someone would do without thinking, the characters really act as if they were adults, what ... they say and do are of people who already have a maturity and are aware of what people will think of them.

Informative genre
This is an anime where they tell you stories about the bottles that are used, the drinks that are prepared and the ingredients that are needed, it gives you a little bit to learn about the "elements" that a bartender uses.

Story centered on people's problems
The story has two aspects, the first focuses on the customers who go to the bar where the protagonist works, where each of them has a problem, which they tell their bartender, the second focuses on the main protagonists and their story. A higher percentage of time is spent on the stories of the customers, or that is what it feels.

Real brands
Real alcohol bottle brands are used, real beverages are also used to mix with the alcohol. It makes it feel real that the character knows what he/she is doing and that it can be applied in real life.

Creativity
The main character likes to experiment with ingredients that you wouldn't normally use to make certain drinks, I wouldn't know how realistic it is that you can use those ingredients without ruining the drink but I decided to trust that what he does makes sense and can be applied in real life.

After watching the first episode I immediately fell for the show's charm and atmosphere so I started reading the manga right after the first episode.
Only after reading it have I realised that this adaptation doesn't follow it at all, I quite liked the short story-esque with an overarching plot in the background formula that the manga had, and this creative liberty of the studio to create a more connected story just doesn't sit right with me.
Until it is done airing I can't really recommend it to someone that liked the source material, but I also can't say that the show is awful for an ... anime only.

It was hard for me to get through this anime but I'm trying to rate it objectively. This anime is one of those that is all about exaggerating a hobby or niche interest with dramatic cuts. If you're intensely interested in cocktails and bartending then maybe you'll adore this anime and enjoy watching a character drinking a cocktail having an life changing moment from how the main character mixed the whiskey and the soda water SO WELL, but if you're looking for something with even a scrap of actual plot or characters that deviate from the most bland possible mould, you'll be so bored your ... soul might just leave your body while trying to watch this.

Personally I'm not much of a cocktail fan so it doesn't really speak to me. I'm more of a fan of enjoying a good single malt whiskey neat with a lunch or dinner meal. That being said I can appreciate that the temperature of a beverage can really change the flavour profile as the anime points out many times over. P.S. Japanese Whiskey sucks balls. Just the worst.

Only in an anime can you make the art of making cocktail this sensual. My alcohol lover senses got seduced from the first scene with the ice crack and that sexy ASMR sound. lol I feel like this anime is a campaign to promote bar hopping & it works too well on me.

The show got an old school vibes to it where you usually seen in shows about people who's a master of their field. It's more about diving into that specific world/field than a plot driven story, which is interesting in a different way. I haven't read the original manga though it reminds me ... of Drops of God where feuds and emotional baggages can be solved by the right alcohol; the approach here is way less dramatic. Of course that's not how real life works, but it's comforting to watch.

The show direction is also super immersive. Since each scene are slower pace, it makes you feel like you're in the bar waiting for the next drink to try. The art just enhance every drops of lemon, every shine of ice, & the warmth of smoke. Enhanced by the ASMR sound & calming voice of our bartender, it just put you in a resting mood after a long day just like a good glass does.
