Revenger

Although, Saraiya Goyou is older than Revenger, they both have a similar story: use the skills and techniques of a samurai in jobs that questions his integrity and morals. From the first moment that I saw episode 1 from Saraiya Goyou, it took me to Revenger. The samurai from House of 5 leaves is poor and hungry and wants to accomplished his dream as a samurai, also he has a complicated personality. The main character from Revenger has more dark background, but also a complicated personality. Both of them are lead on by a man that would do anything to accomplish what he wants. Historical anime focused around main characters being paid for assassinations, and intrigue focused story with an underlying plot involving uncovering aspects of the opium trade. Both include a foreign presence in a Japanese city (European/Chinese). 

Both shows follow the same premise: the main character becomes involved with a group of outlaws who kill those who have committed moral misdeeds. Each show starts out as episodic but builds toward a larger story arc in the second half. 

A story about a samurai in Japan during the revolution 

A group of badass and good-looking men with ties to the clergy roam around fighting people. 

Manji (Blade of the Immortal) and Raizou (Revenger) are samurai who have killed innocent people and pledge to atone for their sins. Both series explore whether killers deserve redemption. Blade of the Immortal is a much more violent series compared to Revenger whose plotline has more intrigue. Blade of the Immortal and Revenger have been overlooked series that easily appeal to the same audience.  

Similar themes about revenge, the progression seems similar. Although Revenger seems a bit more lighthearted while Jouran takes on a more serious note right from the get go. 

Raizou (Revenger) and Afro (Afro Samurai) are pursuing revenge against those who have caused the death of their love ones. Afro is willing to kill anyone that stands against him or blocks his path. Raizou is an honourable individual who feels conflicted about what has happened to him despite wanting to revenge. Revenger tries to introduce more nuance and complexity compared to Afro Samurai, which is satisfied with pure violence and action. Both series have a different approach to a samurai anime so that should help to keep your attention.
