Seishun Buta Yarou wa Odekake Sister no Yume wo Minai

Sakuta Azusagawa's little sister, Kaede, is wrapping up middle school and needs to make an important decision. The school counselor believes it is in Kaede's best interest to attend an online high school, given her history of being a shut-in and her crippling phobia of traditional classrooms. However, Kaede wishes to enroll in Minegahara High School, just like her brother, as she desperately hopes for a typical high school experience. She pleads with Sakuta; his girlfriend, Mai Sakurajima; and Mai's half-sister, Nodoka Toyohama, to help her study for the entrance exam—and they enthusiastically agree. But her envisioned high school life does not unfold as planned. With her unresolved trauma coming to a head, Kaede grapples with the conflict of determining what sort of future path she truly wants to embark upon.

Kaede and the pandas. If any of you have suffered from "post-panda-kaede sadness syndrome" after the heart-wrenching and bittersweet finale of season 1, this film is the perfect therapy. As a reminder: After Sakuta's cheerful, childlike sister regained her memory, she has returned to her original personality, although she has lost all memory of the last two years with her brother. Barely appearing in the last film, this storyline is finally being continued.

Kaede has become stronger. While even walking to the apartment door used to be a struggle, she now dares to walk longer distances. She also makes her first real friends again with ... Nodoka. Her biggest dream, however, is to attend her brother's Minegahara high school. But then Sakuta is again caught up in the thought that Panda-Kaede, with whom he has bonded over the last two years, has disappeared and whether, despite her progress, an online school would not be better for his sister. Despite all adversities, Kaede wants to achieve her goal and immerse herself in the world of a normal high school student.

In contrast to the series, the movie does not contain any supernatural elements. The events in the movie could just as easily take place in real life. Nevertheless, the moveie manages to capture tension from a relatively unspectacular situation. You really get excited about whether Kaede can achieve her goals and, for example, manage to walk her way to school. It also gives an insight into her emotional world and you can really imagine the suffering she is under after the bullying situation - for example, her fear of being stared at is well captured, so that even people without anxiety disorders at least get an idea of ​​the pressure she must be under.

What I also liked is that Sakuta's conflict is highlighted again, something that was completely absent in the first film. No matter how he turns it - it always feels to him as if he has lost a sister. And Kaede also notices that the last two years have left their mark.

First of all, the movie won't bring Panda-Kaede back, but provides a conciliatory, reconciling conclusion between the different personalities of Kaede Azusagawa. If someone was left sad at the end of the first season about the disappearance of their beloved Panda-Kaede, they will be presented with a differentiated perspective of a strong personality who is looking forward to her future.

If you expect a complex story with multiple twists and turns on different levels like in the first movie, you won't get your money's worth here. However, if you really like Kaede and watch her bravely go her own way, you will really enjoy the movie. It would probably worked as a regular episode too, but it really was an experience to see, in a full cinema, how the audience were literally hanging on Kaede's every word and cheering her on as she took her steps back to life.

Now I really want to visit pandas.

Mixed Feelings

~ The story is a bit slow and uneventful, which is particularly concerning when the movie has a meagre runtime of under 74 minutes (even less if you exclude the end credits).
~ The movie begins and ends with a scene relating to the sequel, which makes the story feel less like a cohesive experience and more like a quick layover before a more important story.
~ Between the fact that he's both a supportive boyfriend and a caring older brother, I'm beginning to think this "rascal" isn't really much of an actual rascal. And no, being a bit pervy with your cute actress girlfriend is not ... an example of delinquent behaviour.
+ I gotta admit, the movie did give me a couple of good laughs.
+ Despite its languid pacing, it is thematically substantial. Without going into too much detail, the story involves Kaede, her goals for the future, and her struggles with identity.

= The Rascal Does Not Dream series is at its best when adolescent struggles are externalized into a conflict against a sci-fi/fantasy force, but this third installment/second movie somewhat flounders because most of this conflict is realized internally. Kaede is a serviceable central figure for this movie (since her story arc in the first season left a lot of loose ends), but her conflict, while relatable, is largely static and ultimately resolved through a shift in perspective as opposed to direct, tangible action.

That said, it's a nuanced character study on a character that desperately needed one, and gives us a deeper understanding of the sibling relationship between Sakuta and Kaede. While it's definitely tempting to ask for more, what we got instead was interesting in its own way, too. It doesn't exactly live up to the high points of the series, but it's far from outright awful.

It's just another subpar addition to the Seishun Buta Yarou Series.

There's barely any story, the movie is about Kaede deciding between correspondence school and Sakuta's school and that's it, not much occurs that could create any gripping tension. Even though this movie is only one hour long, it still feels way longer than it should be due to the lack of plot. Combined with the lack of substance, the anime still keeps the flaws of its predecessors. Cringeworthy interactions with Sakuta, especially with Mai, jokes that weren't funny for the first time being repeated after many times; scenes of the characters just doing daily normal ... stuff, which could work for a slice of life with good characters, which is not the case for this anime. And about the characters; it seems like they had to fill all the previous cast somehow even though they were completely irrelevant, so there are many random scenes with characters like Futaba and Tomoe that are pointless and dull.

The art style and animation are the same, mediocre and nothing to write home about. Even though it's a movie, there's no new song. Just like in the previous piece, they just use the old ending song and that's it. There's nothing memorable about the soundtrack.

It's hard to find something good to say about this movie, the only thing is that Kaede gets a lot of screen time. Even though this movie was focused on Kaede, who is the best character in this franchise, it wasn't able to present a compelling story, which is a waste of a good character. Her struggle with social anxiety makes for a promising setting, but it falls flat with the poor execution. This low-effort piece of media is not only bad but an offense to the honor of anime fans. It's unnaceptable to present an anime in this state and expect people to like it.
