Ame wo Tsugeru Hyouryuu Danchi

Ever since the death of his grandfather, Yasuji, Kousuke Kumagaya has grown distant from his close friend, Natsume Tonai. Having grown up together like siblings in the same apartment building, the two now find themselves at odds with one another due to Natsume's inability to let go of the past. This rift is further exacerbated by the news that their former complex will soon be demolished.

Hearing about a ghost that is supposedly haunting the old complex, Kousuke's friends drag him into the demolition site to look around. When Kousuke finds that Natsume is also there, they get into an argument over an old camera that once belonged to Yasuji. This results in Natsume running off with it, but just as she is about to fall off the rooftop, a torrential downpour envelops the entire building, flooding the ground around it.

The young children now find themselves drifting at sea with the apartment building acting as their ship. Unable to communicate with the rest of the world, Natsume and Kousuke must reconcile their differences if they want to stand a chance at finding their way home.

I don't know why the score of this movie is so low, but it's really Ghibli from another studio! I mean, it feels like a ghibli movie. When you are exhausted or sad, this movie will make you better. This is so much aesthetic and refreshing.
Actually, I like it's vibe. The storytelling and the bonds between characters will make you cry.
The art style and animation has gone crazy. The story is not that unique, but you can watch this with your family, refresh with the movie.
After all, I wanna say one thing: Watch this, the movie will worth your time.

Mixed Feelings

Stunning visual - which contributes to most of my rating for this. Another that contributes is the kids' ingenuity in surviving with limited resources.

Plot and concept isn't new, but they don't detract from the watching experience or the rating. What did, is how long this movie dragged on, just to prolong the melodrama. Noppo and Natsume should be the characters easiest to sympathize with (in my opinion), but the meandering drama and supposedly tear-jerking moments prevented me from truly feel for them. There are moments when Natsume just stood there, absorbed in a reminiscence, when they were pressed for time and could not afford to ... do that. The first half of the movie is entertaining and intriguing enough, but past the 1-hour mark, it's just mostly filler (and drama). And there are plot points left unexplainable, which I will not say here to avoid spoilers.

Regarding the characters, the kids can feel annoying at times, but it can be understood that it is just kids being kids. The main character, Kosuke, though, put me off by how unnecessarily callous he was to Natsume at the beginning. What had the girl done to you, my man? Are you seriously mad at her for grieving? He did develop throughout the movie, which is a good thing, but personally, the damage has already been done.

I would not recommend spending two hours of your life watching this.

First, the visuals are amazing and live up to the standard of a large-budget Netflix film. The voice acting and background details are also pretty great, it's a great aesthetic production. But not even that could distract from the extremely mediocre, poorly-constructed plot and utterly flat characters.

The story itself is very much "tell, not show". The reason for the main protagonists clashing and Natsume's personality is explained in bits, often having huge chunks of context missing. For at least a third of the film, you will have more questions than answers. Some ... will be answered in a somewhat-satisfying manner, others are just not addressed.

A lot of the plot requires a lot of convincing. When a strange, ghost-like boy joins their group while stranded out in the sea, nobody questions this until tensions come to a head. Supernatural elements do not mesh well into the plot, and instead feel shoehorned in at the most convenient moments.

As for the characters, they spend most of their time arguing, being petty, getting almost or actually injured. The dangers they face are incredibly repetitive - Natsume will slip, Kosuke will save her, then Kosuke trips and she saves him. It's like the only thing they can do on-screen are emotional outbursts and cheap action. Not to mention so much of these happen due to sheer stupidity, even for a children's film.

The side characters have very little growth. I think an early-2000s chatbot would be able to emulate more depth than some of them. Reina was written to be the jealous, spoiled little rich girl who's just hopelessly into Kosuke. Despite being written as rather unlikeable, I so badly wanted to like a silly young girl like her - provided she has depth and growth. Unfortunately nope. She acted selfishly and constantly blamed Natsume for the whole predicament, which got tiring quickly.

This film wanted to do way too much with way too many characters. It did not deliver.
