A journey through worlds where sanity is a thin thread and reality unfolds into nightmares. This collection explores psychological terror and the shadows of the supernatural, revealing characters who face inner demons and oppressive societies. Through dark and disturbing narratives that move through alternative realities and post-apocalyptic scenarios, each anime here is a reflection on the fragility of the human mind in distorted contexts, where delirium meets dystopia.

A basic recommendation of anime classics starting from the important year 1963 when Astro Boy debuted. Only one anime per franchise allowed, and selection is partly based on watchability, so you can get right into what seems interesting.

This is part 4 of 5, it covers 1999–2010.

Hidden Dark Slice of Life or HDSL anime appears on the surface to depict a simple and peaceful everyday life. However, beneath this light-hearted exterior lies a layer of dark themes and profound messages. For children, it may come across as a fun and cheerful story with cute characters, while adults can perceive hidden elements such as trauma, loss, or existential questions. This contrast makes the genre unique, offering an experience that shifts between happiness and sadness depending on the viewer’s perspective.

“Humans cannot reject temptation. When they are plunged into the depths of despair, likened to hell, they will hold on to anything that may help them escape from the situation they are in, even if it's merely a spider's thread, no matter what sort of humans they are.”

anime made by and for INFJs. strong Ni. but different from INTJs, you can see the Fe & Ti come through.
if youre coming from MBTI or 16personalities, there will be an unexpectedly large amount of Ti, since their thing is pretending only the two topmost functions are relevant. INFJ function stack: Ni / Fe / Ti / Se

Ni x Ti:
- underlying principles taken to their logical conclusion
- we need to figure out this underlying mechanic causing everything, resolving everything
- often detective style quest for underlying mechanic ('I have this exactlingly worked out')
these underlying mechanics are plausible/logical, but, speaking as an INTJ, unrealistic and frustrating to watch
- explaining why some abstract causal relationship (Ni) leads to such and such outcomes

Ni x Fe:
- conflict management is about talking it out & humility (Fe people are all about the ego), rather than hot warfare (Te)
- figuring out who has the moral highground vs who needs to apologize, is a solution
- checking excesses from unhealthy egos
- characters egos are displayed with a a lot of nuance
- responses to healthy & unhealthy egos are displayed with a lot of nuance and realism

- psychological trauma
- psycho-sexual trauma
- traumatic childhood
- traumatizing social interactions in past or present
- characters motivations go back to some psychological thing. e.g. steins gate has MC acting like an over-the-top mad scientist to distract mayuri from her family loss
- character motivations change (for the better)

more Ni:
- well-made series composition
- atmospheric direction
- high nuance

notes:
- there is a lot more Ti (INFJ's third function) coming through than mbti & 16 personalities will acknowledge, since their thing is pretending only the two topmost functions are relevant.
- no I dont respect personality database typings and neither should you
- ISTP's world setups are similar (e.g. gosick), because they share all cognitive functions, including this combination of Ni x Ti. but their solutions are different: usually fantastic personal competence. INFJs have a stronger Ni aspect (e.g. detective conan or when they cried vs speed grapher)
- studio ghibli anime isnt on here because miyazaki is imo an INTP

- not all animes are dominated by one cognitive type, but some are.
