Platinum End

To put it plainly, Platinum End is… misunderstood.

There’s a lot to say about Platinum End – its concept and execution, its characters and their quirks and intricacies, its art and animation, its social commentary and outlooks – yet, Platinum End’s biggest flaws are Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata.

The two authors – story and art, respectively – of Platinum End. Chances are that nearly everyone that has read or watched Platinum End did so knowing, or perhaps solely for the reason that these two are the authors of Death Note. Platinum End will inevitably always live in the shadow of Death Note, considering its masterly writing ... and cultural impact - and it simply doesn’t have what it takes to break free from this label. This, however, is not to say that Platinum End should be seen as a successor to Death Note, which is what pushed so many people away from seeing Platinum End as what it is: its own story.

Back on track, Platinum End tells the story of Mirai Kakehashi, our MC, and eleven other god candidates - regular people that for one reason or the other, had given up on life and were on the verge of suicide, only to be rescued by their guardian angels, literally. Before you misread my tone, let me just say that I think the concept of Platinum End is brilliant: 12 people of different ages and contexts, all with their own unique struggles, dejections, and delusions, faced with a predicament of unprecedented severity, as only one of them is set to hold the very future of humanity in their own hands. Perhaps cliché, but brilliantly set up.

As the story goes on, we are presented to more characters and villains, each with different motives and goals, as rivalries and alliances begin to form. Characters like Mukaidou and Kanade give us compelling yet justified perspectives on a convoluted mess, while characters the viewer is more familiar with, like Mirai and Saki, show us a side of the coin which may not be as enthralling, but show a sense of humanity and composure that the average Shonen viewer might not be ready to embrace. Characters’ motivations are often simplistic and one-dimensional, yet they’re cleverly presented in a way that reminds us that humans are simple-minded beings. Nowadays, many shows will try too hard to find glamorous meaning behind characters’ actions, to a point where characters lose their authenticity. However, Platinum End succeeds in telling us an extravagant story, where the characters are nonetheless human.

The category where Platinum End truly fails to bring out its fullest potential, is the animation itself. It pains me to see Obata’s art in Death Note, animated by Madhouse, 15 years ago, look so alluring compared to whatever ‘Signal.MD’ (who?) put together for Platinum End in this day and age. Thanks to Obata, the art and characters in Platinum End look great… as long as they stand still. Not only is the animation subpar, but the studio somehow managed to use every tool in the box to make characters that are on the brink of their demise look even more lifeless than their own rotten souls.

Other aspects of the production of Platinum End are satisfactory enough not to hinder the viewer’s experience. The soundtracks and background art are sometimes somewhat dull, but they complement Obata’s art well enough, and the opening and ending sequences are surprisingly amusing, particularly the opening, with the second ending being an upgrade from the first. The occasional fight scenes are nothing to applaud, but they keep the tension high and are backed by adequate sound effects and soundtracks.

Overall, I think Platinum End deserves credit for giving the viewer a story that surprisingly manages to keep them on the edge of their seat, with well-timed cliffhangers and skillfully maintained tension throughout the length of the show’s run. Some aspects of its production weaken its impression but are backed by solid story writing and well-founded characters and contexts that keep the story fresh, and the viewer engaged.

Ohba created the manga keeping the suicidal issues of Japan in mind. It's a manga about suicidal people. And keep in mind he kept all the characters morale, ideologies and mentality as real as an actual human.

The whole story of platinum end revolves around the concepts of depression and suicide. And both are connected to eachother in real life and in the story of platinum end.

Those who don't really know anything about either suicide or depression will never understand the story. The following explanation all revolves around the concepts ... of depression and suicide.

The "Depression" , the "Suicide" and the "Will/Hope"

"The Depression"

First let's see what Depression IRL is.
Depression (major depression) is not sadness, it's best described as emptyness. You can l be laughing and smiling one moment, everything seems just fine, the world is beautiful and the very next moment and all of a sudden depression kicks in and sucks away your "hope to keep living".

Depression can also be caused by abuse in one's childhood, oh wait that's Mirai.

The embodiment of depression in the ending of the story is Muni the angel of destruction (**explained later)

"The Suicide"

Depression is one of the leading cause of suicide. People prefer death then to keep living in agony.

Depression makes you hollow, it makes you "shallow", it makes you forget who you once were.

The most depressed character of the story, Mirai, is perfect embodiment of real life depression. He choose suicide when there was no "hope" in his life.

The embodiment of "hope" in the story is God (**explained later)

"The Hope/Will"

We all are living becz we have a hope/will to continue live.

Depression can surely suck ones "hope to live."
In the story of platinum end, that "hope" for candidates who were once hopeless upto some extent in life were given a 2nd chance i.e. "by becoming god".

Death of God is the "death of hope" (**explained below)

**Explanation

What u witnessed in the ending is the inter relationship b/w depression, suicide and hope to live.

Since her debut, Muni the angel of destruction (depression) has always shown her desire to bring havoc to the heaven & the God (hope) and ultimately humanity.
Muni chooses Yoneda becz they both have the same goal i.e. humanity's despair (Episode 18 although Yoneda's "despair" is a paradox)
God's death ("suicide") i.e. heaven's fall is what Muni always wanted, and she succeeded.

With no God (hope/will) the lives all around the world ended.

The Meaning: Depression saps the hope/will to live and often results in suicide.

"The ending events and meanings"

As god, Shuji Nakaumi observes the truth of the world. He saw the differences among people, he saw several people committing suicide.
He asks 'why' the previous god didn't helped the once in need, and instead did nothing.

The *original God* inside him answers "I watched, gods purpose is to create life."
Original God continued and said "you may do anything, you are god, if you want to kill them, kill them. If you want to save them, save them."

Shuji remembered Mirai saying "I will do nothing" and prof. Yoneda's theory of "no need for god."

He came to the conclusion that there is no need for a god as god doesn't do anything in the 1st place. This is where he was wrong,
Shuji wanted to tell Yoneda that his theory of 'no need for God' and 'God being a creation of human imagination' were right. (But they weren't)

Shuji Nakaumi concluded there is no need for a god and gods death will not bother the human world.
The *original God* inside Shuji warned him that and said "Not true, don't do this." (remember this)
Shuji concluded his death won't make a difference in the human world. (remember this)

The Meanings

The ending is very simple in terms of meanings. It revolves around the concepts of suicide.

The feeling of hopelessness, the feeling of uselessness, the lack of 'color' in life, the lack of interest and desire to do keep living and many many more feelings and thoughts constantly revolve around in the mind of a suicidal person.
Ultimately when these 'negative' feelings overtake the 'positive' feelings, the positive feelings that makes one to keep living, many surrender to suicide.

Note that how I used the words 'positive' and 'negative'. For us normal and healthy minds the feelings of suicide are a 'negative' becz we have a will to live and a hope in life, we want to keep living and suicide is opposite of what we desire.
But for a suicidal person, life is nothing but a living hell. For them, life is the 'negative' and death is the 'positive' as they want to end the suffering .

Another common thought in many suicidal people is, "What difference will it make if I die?"

The ending of platinum end answers that very question. Shuji Nakaumi never ever intended to end humanity. He believed the death of God will make no difference, just like how a suicidal person thinks his death will make no difference to the world around him.

Suicidal people often think their lifes are insignificant, and so their deaths won't really matter. Most of them fail to see what havocs their death can cause to their close ones, just like how Shuji failed to see how his death will effect the human world, and he will never realise how wrong he was.

God does nothing for the world, still his death affects the entire world. With the end of god, there was no one to maintain death. Without death there is no life, just like there is no light without darkness.

Mirai for example, was going to die in agony but was saved by Nasse. He lived a happy life and then finally died happy.

Some interesting takes from the ending

∆ After God's death, Ogaro said "This couldn't had happen once they (original God & Shuji) were completely fused".
The whole reason to pick suicidal people as god candidates was to make it easier for "The original God" to absorb and fuse with the candidate's mind.

If u didn't knew that even after watching 24 episodes then idk maybe u were watching with closed eyes.

This is entirely my theory, I could be right I could be wrong:

Children are most vulnerable to depression BUT they have support of parents and thus the rate of depression in children is quite low. But if children r exposed to a adult's level of depression, they will surely crumble from it.

Now note that females vanished before males (of the same age group).
Studies from different groups all around the world stats that depression rates in females are higher in than that in males.

The last ones to vanish were the olds like Yoneda. Again if you check the stats of how depression affects different ages, studies show that most older adults feel satisfied with their lives, despite having more illnesses or physical problems than younger people. Not saying they can't have depression, but they are old enough can have factors like experience that does help fight depression.

∆ Yoneda couldn't finish his last sentence. "The creature is____..." this is set up my the author so that the viewers can use their own brain and pick what he's saying.

There are 2 types of people in the world, one who understands Platinum end and one who does not understand Platinum end.

With the 1st half of the show showing about how people deal, live and make decisions with depression (like Mirai & Saki)
How depression affects different individuals and how with help of other humans it can improve. (Like Mukaido with Mirai)

2nd half was about suicide, depression and the hope/will to live. Just like I explained earlier.

Not the most satisfying ending but the meanings in it are an absolute masterpiece.

Platinum end has always been an anime of meanings, philosophies, ideologies, there is so much one can learn *if* they try to pick the meanings b/w the line. But that's where so many people fail, they don't want to use their brains and instead call every as bs and leave.

I do not understand why some super experts of anime manga relate it to Mira Nikki, they just have nothing to do with it. But of course, if you are looking for the similarities between one thing and another, you will obviously find it and it seems that those who write reviews in this section are dedicated to that.

The anime is good. It is not completely predictable, but the protagonist can become very annoying with the too pure and childish thought of him. However, I don't judge that ... Why? Because it is possibly the kind of contrast that the author wants you to make, ... the main antagonist would be a bit more like those who compare him to Mirai Nikki, hopeless and seeing the negative relationship with everything in life.

However, I have never liked the Battle Royale theme too much, and this anime is basically one, however it has a different twist.

The development, aesthetics and theme of the anime is entertaining, the characters are good, very good in fact, however, what the expert critics do not know how to say is that the problem is the rhythm. Personally, I think it was a bad decision to make the anime with more than 12 chapters, I don't know what will follow or how it will end, but it seems to me that they could condense the series even more.

Anyway, very excited to continue watching and finishing this good anime. Thanks to the producers.

I do not understand why this anime gets so much hate. People decided to hate it since the trailer dropped and then review bomb the series before it even took off.

Story: 7
The story is not original, but that does not take from the enjoyment. A lot of people keep comparing it to Mirai Nikki, which is understandable, but doing a battle royal anime is not a crime. An anime series does not have to reinvent the wheel to be enjoyable.

Art: 8
The art is pretty good. The CGI is not overused and the CGI arrows that they use are quite beautiful. I am usually extremely critical ... of CGI in anime because it can really ruin the animation, but in this series it is used tastefully and purposefully. There were only a few moments where they used CGI to cut some corners, but I will overlook that.

Sound: 8
The sound effects are good. They really augment the action and make it more impactful. The opening and ending are ok. I will not add them to my Spotify playlist, but they are good.

Character: 8
Here is where it gets interesting. I will agree with the majority on this and say that the MC is pretty unbearable. I wouldn't say poorly written. A lot of the times he is extremely indecisive to the point where I want to scream 'Oh come on, just do it!!!' at my screen. I am hoping for a better development towards the end (I have not read the manga so I don't know if that will happen). HOWEVER, what the MC lacks, the other characters have plenty of. The other characters are so well written that I can forgive the MC. They have strong backstories and the show didn't waste too much time explaining them, so you can really understand each character's motivation and purpose.

Enjoyment: 7
It started off strong, then the excitement kind of dwindled, but then it picked up again. To be fair, this is the kind of anime where everything will probably make sense towards the end. It is enjoyable, especially if you don't start the series wanting to hate it.

Overall: 8
I would have normally given it a 7, but I will leave my score as 8 because this anime's score does not reflect its actual quality. Too many people left spite ratings on episode 1 just because it's not as good as Death Note and Mirai Nikki, which really isn't fair or realistic.

I've been reading a bunch of reviews about this anime and it seems to me that the people who write these reviews don't even watch the show all the way through which in the case of platinum end I believe is crucial in order to appreciate what this show has to offer. Now I'm not gonna pretend I'm some established critic when it comes to shows, movies or stories in general but I can't help but notice that every single review I read, whether its praising the show or shitting on it, they all seem to focus on the battle royal aspect of the show ... which ends completely after the first half and is not what this show is trying to portray.

The theme that I believe is being explored in this show is the difference in human thinking and values. This can be seen since the beginning through the conflict between the antagonist and the protagonist, one being a selfless righteous character taken to the extremes sometimes, and the other a selfish psychopath who would do unspeakable things to achieve his goals. Later on after the antagonist is eliminated from the story we're introduced to professor Yoneda, the character who changes everything. Yoneda is the embodiment of logical thinking, a person of high intelligence that looks at the world in a analytical way, a person who becomes detached from human interaction in the pursuit to finding the "truth".

Through the conflict that develops between Yoneda and the main character we are shown the flaws that the two have in their way of thinking.

Yoneda comes up with a theory about the existence of God and the way this "creature", as he calls it, affects reality. While his actions are supposed to help humanity Yoneda fails to consider that his theory might be wrong and his values might not be in the best interest of humanity. At the end he finally sees his mistake and gives up on his plan.

Kakehashi, the main character, stands for morality and yet he is ready to kill the professor in order to bring happiness to the world, something that directly contradicts with his values.

The presentation and analysis of these ideas is what made Platinum end interesting to me and why I gave it such a high score. I'm well aware of the flaws it has in terms of pacing, characters etc. but I'm not a critic, I'm mainly rating based on enjoyment. Still I wrote this review because it seemed like no one really understood the point of this show and either compared it to the authors past works or just focused on the trivial aspects of it.

To start with. I can see why
many give it a bad score and it is of course 100% based
on peoples opinions and preferences.

I will try not to Spoil the series for others as much as possible.

I have seen many places compare Platnum End to death note. I can see that there are some similarities ... Sure.
however, I think one gets a worse experience with platnum End if you starts to watch it in the hope that it would be able to fill the shoes of death note.

the reason i think a lot of people give it a bad rating is based on the same attitude ... i think people have to building a sand castle...
someone enjoy the whole process of having to fetch water and collect sand, create some kind of structure.
you do not know exactly where you are going with that sand castle, but it slowly takes shape after you have created a good base.
Along the way, there may be a little that falls off or breaks, you get it patched up again ofc... in the end you stand with a beautiful sand castle
as you will have to leave at some point in faith and hope that it will stand and no one will come to destroy it. (happy ending).

others may have exactly the same experience as above, but instead of leaving there unaware if anyone else is coming and smashing it
takes control and gets almost as big a kick out of watching it get smashed completely again.

what I am trying to express is if you are the type who is most for the first scenario (which I think most are)
then one is very likely to give it a bad rating.

and with that said I would say I myself am the type who likes to smash a good sand castle or watch them get smashed.

on the music side ... it's very mid. intro and outro are okay, but probably not the ones I throw at my friends and tell them to just listen.
and the rest of the music during the series was also only mid. many other series can bring the goosebumps on me with music alone, it could
this one not, but it was good enough to set the right moods.

The characters one follows is pretty cool. at first it may seem like they are super mid, but they get some depth pretty quickly
many of those with harsh and sad backstories that have led almost all of them to suicide which is what has brought them into the situation they are standing upon.
the extreme situation they are faced with, as people who have to decide to find a new god among them. It helps to push these characters
in all possible directions that they do not want to get out in and that helps to make them develop super much in the time they are there. (*wink wink*)

the artstyle of the anime is just very good. there is no ugly cgi in between and is overall consistently good. I do not have much more to say
to that :P Im not really picky about animations and styles.

The story I liked a lot!!
I am by no means particularly spiritual or religious. Im usually not a big fan of all the series trying to create theirs
own visualization / version of god, angels and heaven and earth, but it managed to maintain a certain level of tension throughout.
will also think that this series is not as predictable as many other series, witch is also something I really appreciate.

i find it hard to write a review without spoiling it :P
but i hope someone find this helpfull in some way or form.

This contains spoilers.

This is nothing like Mirai Nikki. It's also nothing like death note, except for some certain themes, which makes sense considering it's from, you know, the same creators.

Those themes are mostly "becoming God" and "if you had all this power how would you use it". Those themes, from a completely, completely different take.

People mostly dislike it because of how the protagonist isn't just a carbon copy of Kaneki Ken. He started out "weak" and not wanting to kill, because of morals or something, but unlike every single other character of this sort, he doesn't suddenly have a cool turn-around and deciding to ... sacrifice his morals for the greater good.

But that's literally the point.

Mirai is selfish. He doesn't kill because of morals, yes, but that all has to do with his own happiness. He knows killing will haunt him for the rest of his life, and above all, above how everyone else really is, he wants to be happy. He can only be happy if everyone is happy, but killing is a direct obstacle to his happiness so he can't do something like that.

It's interesting because Mirai is the extreme opposite of Light Yagami. His positions and stubbornness to choose the hard way every single time, even when the audience is screaming "just kill them, and everything will be okay" can be annoying to someone who just wants a new twisted protagonist, but the truth is Mirai isn't a genius like Light, and he isn't twisted enough despite his past either.

The villain, on the other hand, is as bad and twisted as a person can be. Refreshing to see that, really. And he's much smarter and more cunning that the protagonist and his team - it might be stupid, to some, and annoying, but I think it's good how Mirai is really just a normal kid with nothing really remarkable about him aside from his own ideals and desires, and I want to see how he's gonna win against someone like Kanade.

Plot twists at every turn - I remember from the first episode having certain expectations and thinking, ah, this person will turn out to be that, or, this will happen, it's so obvious, what a shame, and every single time I'm proven wrong, but they're not just plot twists for the sake of it. You just expect a certain trope, and you're proven wrong. That's good writing.

The voice acting is good. I didn't expect to cry during this anime, not so early on at least, but during one of the episodes Saki's acting made me cry out of nowhere. I have to applaud that.

My only disappointment: the artstyle. During the first couple of episodes, there was some dramatic animation, dramatic artstyle just like in death note, just like in the manga. I loved that, like how Revel first appeared. But then that just... disappeared. The animation was unfortunately made by a studio that turned it pretty generic, I guess. There is so much lost potential, it's frustrating. I hope it gets better again later.

I feel like Platinum End is somewhat misunderstood.

It's about some people from different ages who basically don't have the will to live anymore so they are given the opportunity to become god. The characters all have their struggles, like everyone and so everyone of them has another plan what to do if they were god or why to become god.

It starts off pretty interesting, if you ask me, since all the god candidates literally wanted to kill theirselves right before they were giving this opportunity so they are kinda finding a reason to live now. But I will also admit that it gets kinda weird ... after a while, because the competition progress is a bit strangely realized and does not fit the overall topic too well - I think this could have been done better. But besides that, I really don't think that this is a bad anime.

Especially later on, this anime gets his direction back and tries to start a discussion between characters to take a look of what people even think god is and if it is even necessary to have a god - asking the question what would happen if it was proven that there was/is no god.

So this anime is talking about serious themes like suicide and religion, while trying to show the value of both life and death in a somewhat twisted way that may make it hard to understand, but you might understand what I'm talking about if you watched the complete thing.

Important to know may also be that I personally wouldn't consider this anime an action anime or some similar genre because, yeah, they got some elements to make it more flashy (I believe) or maybe just more interesting (I don't think it needed that) but that's really not what it's meant to be about.

This is a mostly spoiler-free review. Only one very minor spoiler about one character's motivation.

There is a lot to be said about this story filled with plot holes and overstereotyped characters, but I don't have time for too much so I'll keep it as short as possible


Story: 3

While I like the concept of it, there are a lot of holes, like for example, if they can fly faster than an arrow, and don't have to fire an arrow for it to take effect, why don't they just fly up to people faster than the human eye can see? It would be impossible to defend that ... if caught even a little bit off-guard. There are obviously other plot holes too, but this is the one I've noticed most.


Art: 7

I've seen a lot better, but it isn't bad either, it has it's moments even though cg is a bit overused imo.


Sound: 10

Opening: banger, Ending: banger, OSTs: sets the mood perfectly and sounds amazing, by far this anime's most redeeming quality


Characters: 6

While it does have it's bad characters, like Kakehashi (opinion changed slightly for the better after episode 14), metropoliman actually explained him very well with the line "Saint wannabe", Metropoliman himself is pretty interesting, selfishly wants to be god to revive his beloved sister, probably would have been a better protagonist, Saki is fine, not very well written, but not straight up bad either, simply fine, there's no better way to explain it, Mukaido is interesting, good, sad, and a little bit wholesome, backstory, definately best written among the "good guys". Multiple of the side characters introduced later on are also nice characters, but due to the two main characters being pretty badly written I can't give it more than 6 total


Enjoyment: 7

While I do notice the problems with the plot and characters, I still enjoy it enough to find it worth watching, and as you saw, I love the music, especially the endings.


Overall: 7

Worth watching if you have the time, although I think it might be easier for me to watch because I'm watching it as it airs, who knows.

Also, I probably should mention that I don't really give anything a low rating. Specifics around my rating criteria are in my bio if you're curious.

The anime is controversial and gained great repercussion for its direct approach to suicide, but it manages to break it down better than the 13 Reasons Why series. For those who like anime with serious themes (Seinen), it is a strong recommendation, as the dialogue and the plot progress, there is a lot of talk about religion, science, social thoughts and the distorted view that society has about people who do not fit into the "ideal world". I believe that when you finish the anime, you will have a good time to think better and create your own opinions about what life represents. If you're ... good at picking up references from films like Ghost In the Shell, Matrix, Minority Report, Inception; You will see that the Japanese are more open to talking about truths that the mainstream media tries to hide (yes, it contains occult concepts).

Platinum end wasn’t as bad as what people were saying. This review will not go in depth on the entire story and talk about what it does step by step because that’s too much and no one cares. People need to stop thinking that this show is death note 2.0 because it’s not. platinum end is its own story with no connection’s what’s so ever. Yes, the themes are kind of similar, but very different.

The story starts like this god is dying and needs a successor in 999 days. He sends 13 angles that symbolize certain things like purity, destruction, games, emotions and so ... on to Japan to find God's candidates. The candidates must be people who are willing to die by suicide since they want to make the world a better place. The concept of the story revolves around the ideas of religion heavily, but not to overpower that. It’s like saying this is an anime of religion and all about gods with crazy powers. The theme focuses on more realistic modern element’s wealth, happiness, love, death, science, loneliness, fear, depression, hope and more. People overall want to be happy and what would they do to have it?

The characters throughout the show are interesting. Other than the main characters who throughout lean on each other to develop further, the others are supporting characters for a reason. All the characters had their own unique problems why they want to die and why they either want to be God or not. The show focuses on more of the humane way of how we all think. This show really kept me thinking about how there’s so many things in the world that you would thing make different outcomes can all lead to one. Everyone has their own thoughts and feelings. Some can deny the thoughts of other. Can killing one person be better than many people dying? Are sacrifices worth it or not?

I think if you like a show that throws tough questions and makes you think about what the world is like, then I think you should watch it. To be honest, many people who say they watch anime are people who only think narrow and only watch the main trending shows and don’t really respect anime for what it is. I wouldn’t even bother reading the reviews that gave it a 5 or below or stopped watching it all the way through. There are a lot of animes out there that get misunderstood or low rating because of people who almost belittle everything about it. So, what if it’s got echi in it, or gore, or somewhat of a lacking plot? The author made it this way for a reason and you can’t just focus on one thing in the show; See the bigger picture. This show made me see the bigger picture, and that was is there a god? I’m an atheist, but this show did really make me stop and think.

After reading a few reviews, I felt, like I needed to write one to. Especially after reading a lot of stuff like: This is Mirai Nikki again.

But before I say why this is NOT Mirai Nikki 2.0, I want to say this: Of course, if you think, this Anime is as good as Death Note, of course you're gonna be disappointed. Because Authors normally write one outstanding Story, if even one. The Problem is, that, when they release something after their masterpiece, people say, this is shit, it's not as good as the Story before and so on.
Just try to see Platinum End as a ... Story on it's own, without having Death Note in mind. Then you will maybe see, that Platinum End is a solid Story with it's own strengths and weaknesses like every other Story, but it's definitely worth a try.

And now, why Platinum End is not a Remake of Mirai Nikki (There can be Spoilers for both series from now on):
1. It's NOT a Battle Royal all the time. In Mirai Nikki, it is. But in Platinum End it's a few candidates vs Metropoliman and after that, they're not even trying to kill each other any longer.
2. In Mirai Nikki, they had they're Diary but where alone aside from that. In Platinum End they each have an angel, who also has it's own objective, why he wants his candidate to become god.
3. not really important but I wanted to say it: Mirai Nikki has a Yandere. Platinum End not.

I feel like many of the people who review this show have just jumped on the hype train of calling it either a failure at being "Deathnote's Successor" or "Mirai Nikki but the MC won't kill anyone". Both of these claims are pretty void considering the show isn't trying to be either Deathnote or Mirai Nikki.

The conflict for this show mainly resides within the main character himself and in order to truly get the most out of the show you'll have to realize that the main conflict actually isn't the death game but the MC trying to find happiness again. A very noble cause imo. ... The character is weak because he's supposed to be this way, don't watch this show expecting f*cking Light Yagami tier internal dialogue, because frankly you won't get it. You are gonna get an MC who is broken and traumatized, and honestly he acts accordingly.

The show is by no means comparable to the Magnum Opus that was Deathnote, and it never will be. Many artists can only achieve such a tier of work a few times in their lives. But in a vacuum this show is quite enjoyable and I find the characters pretty real, their reactions feel consistent with their personalities and it's been a satisfying watch for me thus far.

I hope others can have a fresh frame of mind coming into this, and you might find enjoyment if ur not concerned with hopping on the hate bandwagon and having your own opinions about the show.

For people who don't want to read much.
You need to be concentrated from 1st ep if you want to understand hole title, after 14th ep it will be much interesting, trust me. Also don't compare Platinum End with Death Note. Yes, authors of plot are same, but themes aren't the same. First one is Detective, Psychological and second Mythology, Psychological, Survival. So don't be mad if plot isn't same good for you. If you are under age or not familiarized with Psychological topics, don't even try to watch this titles. I could write shorter, but this way you will understand my thoughts better.

In 2020 ... I started to watch anime. One of the first was Death Note. First 10 eps maybe were amazing and after that I dropped with no reason, maybe because detective wasn't my taste.

When I saw announcement (2021) of Platinum End anime adaptation, my first thoughts were like "Wow, it's going to be for sure same good as Death Note...", but this titles are different, because first is detective. So I watched around 9 eps and dropped it, because my expectations were to high.

Around week ago I gave 1 more chance to Death Note, because if I started a title, then it must be complited and didn't do wrong decision. I liked plot a lot, just had to tighten the convolutions.

A day ago I decided to complete Platinum End. I agree that first 12-13 eps aren't good as we wanted, but it was beggining of plot. After 14th ep you need to concentrate on what each character is saying and it was interesting. At all you must concentrate from 1st ep or you will not understand main characters thoughts, also listen to secondary. No comments about ending, because you just need to get "wow" feeling.

In total I think that Platinum End is very good title with deep thoughts. In 2021 I was 17 y.o, to young to understand Psychological topics. Two years gave me progress in understanding psychology, not good as I want, but enough to understand plot. Hope that you got my opinion.

Betwixt premise conception and concept adaptation lies a philosophical passion which exudes brilliance. With the absence of hell and demons it becomes clear that anathema can coincide with peace in empyrean domains; duality itself is part of any form of existence, creation and creators... divine or not. It can be said that this series is the most beautiful Shakespearean tragedy to ever grace a visual format. Keep in mind I haven't read the manga though, so I may not know what changes were possibly made or if anything was missing or taken out. So from this perspective my disposition is that ... of a naive spoiled audience with lack of knowledge on the source material. Despite that it isn't fair to say my opinion is not valid as that would be a foolish claim of privileged self congratulatory backslappers who selfishly believe their experience would be the only way to understand this material.

Also, keeping the "power system" basic worked for this type of story telling. Going in depth with it would simply deter the audiences' focus from philosophizing about the various concepts this story presents in every moment. Instead it's like rock paper scissors; seems basic until you analyze the psychological trichotomy of choices that are imposed within it's modus operandi, in my opinion it eliminated a simplistic dualistic concept like heaven vs hell which always places humanity in the middle as a casualty.

Bottom line, A modern day allegorical masterpiece pervaded in metaphorical parables akin to an eye/mind opening documentary. If the audience decides to interpret it straightfowardly without dissecting & analyzing the narrative, they will be left with askew interpretations of the exposé. Alternatively if they descry the diegesis which exhibits perfect exemplum to any prospect; then it has fulfilled it's role, which is in service to the people. Genius incarnations are seldom bestowed upon our fickle existence which presents edification from a performance of artistic entertainment.

At the very least exercise this while watching: what your thoughts think, what your thoughts feel, what your feelings think, what your feelings feel, and remember that the characters are trying to do the same. Although it may be impossible to ignore the negative consequences of positive sound decisions which most humans never realize even exists - it will all be clear once you reach the end credits of episode 24.

Edit: Should you watch it? Watching all of most of Platinum End was good for the most part, not great, but good. I think the show really ended at episode 23 if not halfway through episode 24. Let me just say I was dissatisfied with that ending. If you do watch it then I'd just forget the very end ever happened. Disregarding the very end I'd say the show is like a 7 or 8. With the end though more like a 6

SPOILERS: (I really disliked that they left off a bunch of questions that still weren't answered like Nasse being a random creature that ... was found, and muni wanting to destroy heaven? I saw no motives on why they wanted that to happen. It was just kinda lol guess all of creation can just die off now. With tons of questions left unanswered. I don't even know what to think about that ending)

Thoughts: I really like this anime. Though I can see where some people are like it's just like Mirai Nikki but a bit different and yeah while that's true the characters are way different. I think it's best not to compare it to Mirai Nikki and as an anime itself I've been liking the story alot. Though I do have to complain there was like one episode of just talking that kinda made me like why, but it went by so quickly because it was a high pressure situation, so I guess it gets a pass

Art: Art style is like any other anime really, but I gotta say they really made the main characters look basic as heck well besides the angels. But then again why would regular Japanese citizens stand out amongst people especially those that are introverts and don't really express themselves.

Sound: That opening is amazing. When the beat starts I'm like eyyy my inner middle and high school coming back to life rocking to this hard lol.

Characters: I connect to the main character well because I lived most of my life with his morals so I can't say much about him because I mean even today I wouldn't wish death on anyone even those that really don't like. The girl on the other hand she is really basic, but like I said before introverts are usually the most normalest people because they don't want to stand out, so it fits the story and her character. I think the most interesting aspect of the anime is the other side characters like one of the antagonist. His dreams are weird, but he has a unique goal. (Keep in mind I'm not trying to spoil). The angels are interesting and I like the fact of them being uniquely know for certain things.

Overall: I been enjoying the anime, but with say recent changes I'm not sure on how the direction will go, so opinion might or might not change.

A STORY ABOUT PEOPLE WHICH IS MISUNDERSTOOD BY PEOPLE.

I may very well be biased as I read the series during it's serialization and am a huge fan of the authors as I have read all their works. But to me this show is actually fantastic. I think the problem is people are trying to make it out to be Death Note part 2, but just like Bakuman was completely different from Death Note and is easily one of the greatest manga/shows of all time this too is a great work.

The problem that many will encounter is they are expecting a Death Note successor or ... Mirai Nikki-esque story and execution. It's how many were expecting action and a very much Batman story with Joker but instead got the exploration of how a mind can breakdown into total and absolute chaos. But that's not what this work is or even what the story's motivations are about. It isn't just about morality, but it is about what we as individuals define as happiness, what is it to be human and what it truly means to be alive. It explores that from the perspective of multiple characters, from multiple backgrounds and all of which have different motivations. It has fantastic animation and art and the score is awesome. If you have seen or read Bakuman and Death Note you will see a lot of references to both that make the experience even better.

Don't go into this show with what the bad comments and people are saying, go into it and embrace it. Pay attention to the characters and their stories, to their motivations and also the plot which in itself is great, because within that is a very very very important message.

I don't often review anime before finishing it, but this one seems to currently have a bad reputation. I'd like to help anyone who isn't sure about watching it come to a decision.

The story is pretty slow to start and the main character's personality is flat, but these things seem to be intentional. The first arc heavily tests the main character's moral stance, and the second arc seems to be expanding the conflict of the series broadly. Tsugumi Ohba has a reputation for enforcing rigid rules on his narrative world, then twisting the plot to create engaging mysteries based on those rules. If you enjoyed ... that in Death Note, then you'll enjoy it here. Some of the combat sequences are especially prolonged - not like DBZ, but I can think of one moment in particular where I was just kinda waiting for it to be over.

Watch this if you like Death Note or mysteries. Don't watch this if you dislike slow starts or slower fight scenes.

Contain some spoilers! Story: 8/10 Well.. Many people are saying that Platinum end is quite the same as Mirai nikky. From my personal view its not like that. I have to agree that the idea of the "God election" and the idea about fighting, etc. is literary the same, BUT the whole story began to escalate and everything went different way than in Mirai nikky. Sadly after Metropolitans death anime stopped being so dramatic and as interesting as it was. Last few episodes were just about talking, but I think its okay until something interesting happens after episodes of listening to the ideas of ... the gods candidates and other people.
Animation: 6/10 What I didnt liked too much was the animation. It wasnt wrong and Im sure it was done preciously, but Im not really used to for this type of animation and I dont really like this style.
Music: 10/10 What I really liked was music, opening was absolutely wonderful and sound effects and other songs in anime were pretty good too.
Characters: 7/10 I didnt find any character I would fall in love with or even like a bit more than other. It was practicaly balanced. But I literary hated when Mirai didnt wanted to kill literary anyone, even if that person would kill him. Also between Mirai and Saki I dont really see any chemic and I think they arent good couple. Metropolitans goals were really weird, but he was still probably the main protagonist of the story. If he didnt got killed so fast it would be much more interesting. I have no idea what were Susumu doing here because I think that he did literary nothing expect of thing that he told everything about the god selection to the whole world. Also the rest of the gods candidates at the end of the story were quite noninteresting. Yonedas goal was absolutely dumb.
Enjoyment: 9/10 Even if I found many wrongs in this anime, I enjoyed it, it was something else then I expected, but it didnt dissapoint me too much.
Overall: 8/10 I think many people dropped and rated this anime before they even got at least to the half of the anime, so I think this anime does deserve better overall rating that it does have now.

the reason why im giving the show a 7/10 is because I think that show has some good points. Yes the show is similar to "future diary" but there are some diffrences, I also think that this show is...kinda made for certain people. I say that because meanwhile a lot of people say that the show isn't it or is complete trash, the ... show LTERALLY JUST STARTED, lol I think that there will be some change in the show, yes the art is FIRE but I think the show will eventually get better... especially for it to be having 24 episodes, also I think people forget that WHATS IN THE BOOK IS NOT ALWAYS GOING TO BE THE SAME IN THE LITERAL ANIME. I say that because even though a show can have 24+ episodes doesnt mean they can include EVERY SINGLE DETAIL like the author can in book form . So in conclusion I think the show is pretty good but I also say that its not complete yet so it could get better or worse who knows.
