Tokyo Mew Mew New ♡

Honestly, I have been rather disappointed in the reboot so far. I was quite excited for it initially, as I loved the original anime. However, I don't really care for the reboot. I also don't like the animation much - the design looks clunky and the characters have visually lost a lot of quality. I have only seen the first 4 episodes, but I think I'm better of re-watching the original again, rather than tainting the memories with this reboot. No hate to those who are enjoying it, I just feel it has fallen flat compared to the original. It's okay, they added some scenes ... and stuff that weren't in the original, I just don't feel its worth the time as a reboot. Maybe it can be better enjoyed if you haven't seen the original. Maybe I am just bias, but yeah..

I find it funny how this reboot is going through the same thing Sailor Moon Crystal went through when it was announced back in 2014. Many fans were worried that the reboot wouldn't be good and taint the memories they had with the original 90's show they all loved but were pleasantly surprised when we've seen that not only it was beautifully written, the art style and plot were much closer to the original, marvelous work of Takeuchi Naoko-sensei, surpassing by a lot the messy original anime.

With Tokyo Mew Mew New, however, we, unfortunately, have the exact opposite problem. While the original 2000's series ... had a lot of fillers, "monster-of-the-week" episodes that weren't in the original story, none of them were bad, all the episodes were very well done, and all of them added something important to the story, and to the character's development, and the main plot was adapted well and smoothly in harmony with these episodes. The art style was also remarkable, you could SEE Ikumi Mia-sensei's (R.I.P) style in every character and location.

The reboot, however, already failed in this on the teasers. While the art style isn't ugly or bad per see, is nothing exceptionally notable, and most importantly, you can't see Ikumi Mia's soul in it at all... I'm not particularly fond of the new hair designs and the changes on their clothes (I prefer much more the puffy, cutesy looks on their transformations in the manga and the original anime than these new spikey clothes, my friend told me it looks like those kinds of pointy fabrics that keep scratching you and I totally agree), but it could be something passable were it the only problem with the new art style. (The new transformations are cute, I have to give it to them, but they're not exactly extraordinary as well, the original anime had much more glam and beautiful sequences and poses that this reboot doesn't have). But the fact is that the reboot looks like a totally brand-new series, not a remake of a well-loved series.

When it comes to the plot as well, it looks terrible. It's nothing sacrilegiously different from the original story, however, the changes they made plot-wise are at least questionable. Why did you decide to make Mint already aware of the Mew Mew Project and cooperate with Ryou and Keiichirou if you're not giving it a proper explanation? Just to cut off her transformation arc? To make things shorter? And then they cut off these well-loved scenes (like Ichigo falling from the roof) to make it (apparently) more concise, and YET, keep pacing the episodes weirdly. Like, Lettuce's episode was great, the reasoning and the final confrontation of why she lost control of her powers were better than in the original manga in my opinion. Yet, Zakuro's episode was a fucking MESS. So many things happened so quickly, there was no explanation at all, they barely talked to her, barely had a confrontation (and what the fuck, what a LAZY battle that was), and in the end, she just turns around and says "yeah, not interested in this Mew Mew shit" out of nowhere when they barely had any conversation, like WHAT?? That wasn't what happened in the story AT ALL, they didn't even give her a proper background before presenting her powers to us like in the original manga/anime. Just there, take it.

The fact is I was hoping I'd be proved wrong when I saw those teasers and got an uneasy feeling about this. But unfortunately, I was right to feel like this. Tokyo Mew Mew New has proved so far to be a lazy reboot much more focused on marketing (like, they even launched a girl group) than on actually staying true to the spirit of Ikumi Mia's work and I'm very disappointed with it. Maybe, if you've never watched the 2000's anime or read the original manga, then you'll perhaps enjoy this series. However, for long-time fans like me (whose first anime was actually Tokyo Mew Mew), this is nothing but a stain on our precious memories of this show.

This new reboot is an enjoyment, I guess. It’s not a bad reboot but not a high standard one. First off, it does NOT fully adapt the entire manga closely since they’ve added new twists/ changes but still incorporated some scenes from the manga into this anime. The anime studios are from Yumeta Company and Graphinica so both studios would likely try to change things up but still keeping the message of the story. Personally, it fine to make some new changes to expand the story but if the manga versions are already decent in storytelling, they should try to make a close follow up ... while adding some small new idea changes. Also, it feels rather rushed a little because they had to skipped some scenes from the manga due to the time limit for each episode which is caused by adding many new fillers to expand the story when they could’ve faithfully follow the manga more closely. It seems like there will be 12 episodes which does not seem to be enough unless there will be a second season along the way. Now, for the art-style, it’s a rather hit or miss since in some scenes of the anime, the drawing looks decent while others will look a little wonky or bad. The animations looks decent enough, especially the battle scenes which does have physical combat in some episodes. I’d give them credit for trying to make the art-style look similar to the original anime and the BGM is similar to Sailor Moon Crystal remake. Back to the new changes, I’d say some are fine while some changes are not that great. One disappointing changes for me is from a nice car to a big truck and Mew Mint does have a new role in this new reboot. In my opinion, the second episode seems a bit better since it a little more close to the manga but with some new idea changes, some scenes were cut here and there such as one of the characters fear in the manga/ original anime. Overall, I recommend to new people without any nostalgic bias to watch this reboot anime first before the original anime and read the manga volumes afterwards for better entertainment including the older fans for the nostalgic purposes. However, if not then the original anime and the manga volumes are a highly recommend for you to grab on.

A classic revitalized, though that's nothing compared to the AniManga scene of the constant sequel effect, and it's honestly quite average at best.

Ask any die-hard fan of Reiko Yoshida and Mia Ikumi's Tokyo Mew Mew, and they would say that it's one of those shows that were once in the pipeline slew of the gaining classic Mahou Shoujo a.k.a Magical Girl genre of the early 2000s, right at the time of the immense success of Sailor Moon that has made its way into the West that has taken into effect for years. Of course, with the advent of Madoka Magica that completely turned and screwed ... the genre upside down, it's of no surprise that the genre has continued to evolve, even to this day with more tried-and-true tropes flooding its market just like all other genres nowadays. But what if there is a way to relive how the anime scene was like back then, and this remake which serves as the series' 20th anniversary is defintely part of that celebration...which was lukewarm at best given its popularity.

But if the recent complete adaptation of the subpar reboot that is Hiroyuki Takei's Shaman King has taught us one thing, is that even if the source material doesn't sell like hotcakes nowadays, it uses nostalgic memorabilia to re-define the revingorating success it once had, though that ultimately amounted to the loss in overall quality just for the sake of "putting things right" of how the source material should be adapted. And yes, bar for the course that Tokyo Mew Mew New's rendition is going, it doesn't actually cover the entire manga, but rather, adds its own whimsical spin thanks to Yumeta Company's in-house director Takahiro Natori and series composer Yuka Yamada, which the latter has a knack for shows similar to it from shows like Koisuru Asteroid to the more recent Slow Loop. And in the sacrifice of having to adapt the entire manga (which would've taken another 12 episodes to do so, that thankfully has Season 2 coming next Spring), ultimately, this I felt was the better approach in trying to weigh between counterbalances of having a decent reboot than one that feels rushed. And even then, pales in comparison to Studio Pierrot's original 2002 rendition of covering the entire manga plus fillers in 52 episodes.

The Mew Mews of Ichigo Momomiya (bearing the Iriomote cat DNA), Mint Aizawa (bearing the Blue Lorikeet DNA), Lettuce Midorikawa (bearing the finless porpoise DNA), Bu-Ling Huang (bearing the golden lion tamarin DNA) and Zakuro Fujiwara (bearing the gray wolf DNA), they are the stereotypical "Girl Power" team to save the world from the aliens whom had their home destroyed to smithereens, and Earth is their next place of interest to do the same evildoer stuff. Like you know, each and every Mahou Shoujo tried-and-true formula that predates Madoka Magica. This is pretty stereotypical for the time, and for the most part, the remake serves its purpose well by adapting only the first 3 out of the 7 volumes closely and sprinkling whatever the production staff wants to add into it, making it into a modern remake of an old property, plus new songs to boot in its decency. But this is the same reason where the remake also lost a lot of its luster by being a low-tier production of today's anime industry standards, that not only gives little to no respect to the original, but instead is made in such a way that provides a source of income invested into the project. It's just sad that old legends, whether popular or not, their status have been mostly being castaways of a time where anime was fun (and it still is to this day), but it's how the anime industry had grown up to become an exploitative industry of work that all works are regarded the same way, and to me, this is not how things should've been, but it is what it is.

The general advice, as is any hardcore fan of said source material, would be for you to read the manga that's enclosed in 32 chapters in 7 volumes, something that's more feasible than watching the 52-episode anime (which can take too long). Good thing there's a Season 2 to continue for the fans who love this new iteration. Even if this is or isn't speaking out of nostalgic bias, as someone who really hasn't seen much of the oldies (but have enough knowledge about it), I guess the banter's true that "the original is (undoubtedly) better". I would just like to wish that the remake got the attention and respect that it truly deserves, but it just ended up falling flat on its face.

The plot points they decided to change from the original prove a disservice to the story. As a result, the character relationships feel inauthentic or nonexistent. It feels as if it's trying to rush the story towards an end-goal before it has a chance to build up its own supporting plot-points. It all feels very watered down - less colorful and vibrant as before.

I appreciate some of the updated fashion — though some choices are a bit over the top. Another thing I like is how the opening and ending songs reference the original's... that was a nice touch. Otherwise though, the plot, characters, and ... energy feel almost removed from the source material.

My personal takeaway is that it feels like 'one-of-those-magical-girl-shows' with a new coat of idol added for promotion, and less of slow character buildup, monster-of-the-week heart it had before. If you're new to Tokyo Mew Mew, you will either enjoy it with no original to compare it to, or feel bored as it lacks anything of lasting substance.

I never write reviews. I felt so compelled because that is how terrible this remake is. I was lucky to even make it past the first episode. I have never watched the full original Tokyo Mew Mew growing up consistently. However, I was quite excited to watch the 2022 remake. I grew up with occasionally watching the 4Kids English Dub back in the day. And it was super cute and enjoyable. This review is coming from someone WHO HAS NOT WATCHED THE ORIGINAL TOKYO MEW MEW IN DEPTH. This remake is such a disappointment. I don't know if its the chunky animation or how ... basic the costumes look on the characters in the modern day version compared to the past. But there is zero charm to the remake. And the manga author would be crying knowing how terrible they did her on this 2022 version. You can tell there is literally zero love put into the remake. Now I am not a huge remake watcher. I take remakes as a grain of salt. However, you can tell when love is put into something that is based on something so beloved and this remake and THIS IS NOT IT. The remake should be good enough that it also makes you wanna watch the original. This remake is so bad it makes you wanna pretend it does not exist. The original has beautiful music, cuteness, a story with effort. Take it from someone who didn't even watch the original that, that is how bad this new version is. If your a newcomer to the Tokyo Mew Mew franchise, take the remake for what it is. It is basically a remake to make the dolla bills not for the enjoyment of the fans. As how anime is being treated more now-a days.

I didn't want a remake of all the episodes in the original anime it would've been too much and too long but it's becoming very obvious that 12 was not enough. All the characters have lost their impact or bond, each had to have a moment to shine in the original through fillers and progress as a team. You can see them all get closer and fight less but instead they are going 0 to 5 to 10 within a couple episodes.

My enjoyment of the show so far is solely because I love the original animation but the art, sound and overall characters are so ... much weaker. The art and sound is passable and not really an issue but the characters are such a damper. As said above they don't have time to really bond but they also just don't get more than a few words to describe them and honestly that's all you can use. They are very bland pieces of cardboard presented to us as one thing and we know that's not about to change in the time given to them if they want to also make them finish their final goal of saving the earth.

I am hoping future episodes may redeem this but it does seem like there's not much that can be done other than sob that another anime seems to be ruined by rushing / too little episodes which seems to be a very common issue nowadays.

It’s actually kinda fast paced/ rushed and does not fully follow the manga closely due to them changing some stuff up that either you like it, you don’t, or it doesn’t make a lot of sense compared to the OG source materials such as the manga. This reboot is produced by Yumeta Company x Graphinica which they rather messed things up such as skipping scenes that ended up in a fast paced or change things especially in the other anime they’ve worked on. Moreover, some of the other anime produced by these two collaborated studios does not get a decent amount of rating such as ... Muv Luv Alternative. The art-style are sometimes good or sometimes bad depending on the episode. Disappointing to see. If they somehow faithfully follow the manga more closely and maybe add some extra fillers to help the story if needed then it could be better rather than changing stuff up. Recommend the manga or the OG anime instead of this.
