Tokyo Mew Mew New ♡

I´ve completed season 1 and I am very satisfied. I myself had been asking for a remake for years and it finally happened. The original will always be my favorite since childhood, but there was so much they removed or changed from the manga. Tokyo Mew Mew New follows the manga more closely yet still tweak things to make some characters more interesting or to make sure it´s fresh by not copying all pages from it. Some changes for the better, others for worse.

The animation can go from beautiful to clunky very often and just as I assumed - it´s because of animators´ timeframe. (DVD ... & Blueray prooven to have updated animation). If you can´t look past the less polished bits, oh well.
Script writers have a hard time when it comes to pacing due to them following the manga too closely sometimes. There is a need for breathing between happenings!

Tokyo Mew Mew New is a feel good, cheesy yet unique magical girl show about 5 girls injected with animal DNA who use their powers to protect and save the environment from aliens who seek to wipe out humankind. Friendship, romance, unhinged bad boy who wants the main girl - what´s not to like?

I look forward to seeing season 2 in 2023!

This anime has been a fun ride so far. While the manga's characters look a bit different then the characters from the first anime it is a nice change and I welcome it. The art style is nice and colorful and gives me some nostalgia for both the original anime and magical girl anime of it's time. I feel like the original anime ran for too long so I'm a bit relieved it's only 12 episodes. Most modern magical girl anime tries to make it dark and edgy so it's nice to see a magical girl that is older come back. Not to mention that ... it's about saving the environment, and I feel like this message needs to be heard more than ever. Not to mention the designs of the magical girl outfits look great animated! The ears and tails are so cute on Ichigo and even with characters that aren't traditionally animal girl like Lettuce are extremely cute! It also modernized very well with some minor changes to the technology they used in the manga (mostly because the manga is from 2001 but still). The one thing I'm a bit sad about changing is that Ichigo's hair is no longer pink when she transforms, now it's just a deeper red.

TLDR: If you like classic magical girl anime and animal girls this is a perfect anime for you.

Tokyo Mew Mew New is a remake of the 2002 show Tokyo Mew Mew centered around magical girls infused with endangered animal DNA to fend off aliens intending to take over Earth by infusing Earth creatures with parasites, causing them to mutate.
Despite the strange premise, the show and characters happen to be rather simple. Ichigo is boy-crazy, Mint is high-class, Bu-Ling (Pudding) is happy-go-lucky, and Zakuro is the strong, reserved type. And of course, since it's a shoujo anime mainly marketed towards girls, there's multiple pretty boys who chase after Ichigo. Despite all that, I actually had fun with the show. The characters by ... the end are slightly less one-note, but still need more development and I actually want to watch more now that the show is over.

If you like magical girls or just want to see Bu-Ling do cute stuff, I would certainly say to give it a try.

One thing that needs to be made clear to everyone before watching this: This is a re-adaptation of the manga from the year 2000, NOT a remake of the 2002 anime. This version seeks to tell the story of the manga in a new way, and is not trying to imitate the 2002 anime adaptation. With that out of the way let's go!

Tokyo Mew Mew New follows the story of five girls who gets infused with DNA of red listed animals, and gains superpowers in order to save the world from the threat of alien extinction. The main character, Ichigo, is also struggling to balance ... her life as a superhero with her romantic high-school life as she's in love with a boy whom she doesn't like lying to about her secret identity. Having been infused with DNA from an endangered animal is also ironic fun seeing as the boy she's in love with is extremely passionate about endangered animals. The girls do their best to fight evil while working simultaneously at a cafe and trying to conceal their true identities to the world.

Characters:
All of the characters in this show are somewhat stereotypes that were common for this kind of show back when it was written. Ichigo is your standard protagonist who's determined, loyal to her friends and head over heels for a boy she barely knows. However, they take the time to give her moments of personal growth and a personal arc, mostly tied into her love-interest. Speaking of the love-interest; I never cared much for him in the manga, but here he's fine! Him and Ichigo have a couple of nice scenes together where they just talk, making them feel more natural as a couple and giving them time to just be teenagers in love. Then you have Minto who's the stuck-up rich girl who has a hard time complimenting people, Retasu the clumsy shy girl, Pudding the cute and hyper-active athletic type, and Zakuro the cool and quiet type. It's nothing spectacular, but for a show that was written in the early 2000's they're all fine, and the girls do get moments to bond and get to know each other, making their friendship feel very natural after a couple episodes.

Story:
The story itself is very simple, and I doubt anyone will have any issue following it. It's very classic 90's - 2000's shoujo with colourful but somewhat silly situations interwoven with fight scenes and romance. I grew up with this manga and is thus a bit nostalgic for it, however, there are some common tropes in the story that can be distracting. They never take the time to fully explain most of the plotelements and there are gaping holes in the story at every turn. However, the story was written with pretty young girls in mind and is very cute and fun, so if that's all you're really looking for then there are few actual complaints.

The pacing on the other hand is all over the place, and this is something that I believe can really turn some people away from this adaptation. The first 4 episodes are incredibly rushed, with episodes 4 - 8 slowing down and taking time to develop the characters, and then the pacing drinks an energy drink again for episode 9 - 11, to then have a pretty good final episode. For those that have read the manga this won't be an issue, but for everyone else you should really brace yourselves for some ups and downs.

Presentation:
The overall art style is very cute and suits the show for what it is. The music as well suits the style that the show is going for very well. The opening and ending are even performed by an idol unit comprised of the five main voice actors, who were auditioned specifically for this show. The voice acting does suffer a bit because of this. The main five are all rookies at voice acting, and there are places where it really shows. It's good to prepare for the voice acting to not be up to the standard that most anime fans are used to if you're wanting to enjoy this show. I do want to give the girls credit though, as by the final episode they've all improved significantly, and I barely noticed their previous insecurities anymore.

The animation goes up and down depending on the episode as with all shows created by smaller studios. There are some fight scenes that really stand out, and the transformations and attacks for the most part look gorgeous. There are some derpy looking cells at times however, and the framing is a bit stale at times. This really isn't a show that sets out to be revolutionary in that department though, and you can tell that they focused their efforts where it was most needed.

All in all this is by no means a perfect adaptation. It has flaws at every turn but they in no way sink the show. A lot of heart was put into this from the designs and direction to the VAs and composers.

This being an adaptation that seeks to follow the story and pacing of the manga does make it feel very rushed (as the story in the manga was extremely fast paced) so those who take issue with that should probably give this a skip. Especially those who grew up with the 2002 adaptation should probably skip this as they do most things completely differently.

If you're just looking for a cute, lighthearted, somewhat silly show with a lot of passion put into it despite a smaller budget, and you enjoy mahou shoujo, then this is a good way to spend your time. With season 2 having been announced for April 2023 I really hope more people join us on the hype train!

I never watched the original. I ended up watching this because I thought this was a different shoujo I read a manga volume of back in high school. Glad I decided to watch this anime because it was cute and fun, though nothing to take too seriously. The girls were all easy to like and root for. Ichigo's main love interest is a very kind boy so that romance was also easy to root for too. I liked that the power behind their magic had to do with endangered species to help raise awareness, but it was kind of disheartening finding out how the stats ... given during episode one have changed over the past 20 years.

I'm really looking forward to more episodes and I hope the anime continues even though this is a kind of casual viewing sort of anime. Definitely something worth watching if you enjoy magical girl anime and don't mind non-consensual human experimentation in the name of kawaii and saving the earth.

As a HUGE fan of Tokyo Mew Mew since years ago, I was super excited when they announced its remake. Having TMM as one of my childhood anime made me have high expectations for this. To be 100% honest, the first episode REALLY disappoints me. I honestly watched the first episode when it first aired and dropped the whole series right away. Why? The opening plot is very different from the original series. I know that this is something that I should be expecting but I was really disappointed since there are some elements and/or plots that are missing. It just felt wrong.

I finally brace ... myself to rewatch TMM New several months after its release. For the first 4-5 episodes, I was still not a big fan of it. The introduction plot is pretty rushed and they do remove certain important parts that I really like from the original series. Though, now I'm not that surprised since the total episode (this and the second season) is pretty much half of the original series. Although, it'll be great if they can keep most of those plots from the original series. After finishing the first season, I can say that this remake is pretty recommended to watch! True, if you are a sucker for the original series, you might feel some disappointment. But this remake series does put us in a different perspective of the story. I really like how each main character has some sort of character background and development, instead of just focusing on Ichigo. One of the things that I really like is how they make Zakuro seems a bit easier to approach if compared to the original series. Don't get me wrong, I love Zakuro's character from the original series. But making her a bit warmer and approachable does create a whole new vibe for the team.

Overall, if you compare this and the original series, this one does feel more rushed plot-wise. There are also some slight changes here and there which I do mind at first, but as I continue watching it does give me a new sensation when watching the series. I can't wait to finish the second season. From me, you should not expect much from a remake. True that some remakes have the exact same plot as the original one, but having some different plots or elements in the remake series is also a pretty good thing. If you REALLY love TMM (like me lol), I definitely recommend you give this a shot!

Disclaimer: I started writing this a few episodes into season 2, however my impressions of the show span the whole thing so they apply to this season too!

I saw the original Tokyo Mew Mew when I was about 11 as one of the very first anime I watched and it had me UTTERLY in its grip. Since then, as I grew up, I became more aware of just how cheesy it was and poked fun of it with the teenage/young adult sense of "ha ha, silly 11 year old me for liking something like this"... I wondered why I liked it so much.

Now, in my ... late 20s and without a preliminary rewatch, I decided to jump into the remake fairly blind for nostalgia's sake and I'm so pleasantly surprised! I can see clearly why I loved the original back in the day. Every aspect o the 2002 series that enthralled me all those years ago has come back to hit me in the face, and it may be saccharine and cheesy but I can't help but fall in love with it all over again.
I have no choice but to sink bank into the mindset of a pre-teen girl watching Tokyo Mew Mew New - and surely it's pre-teen girls that are intended to be watching.

The show feels more concise than its predecessor, and it's very charming indeed. While, as most magical girl series are prone to be, TMMN is somewhat a coming of age story, I'm now noticing just how much of a tween girl wish fulfilment fantasy it also is at its core. Each episode reveals something that I know I would have eaten up at 11 (and did!): from the cheesy romance and friendships, through the cute outfits, to the backdrops of each episode (11 year old me would have loved to be at a ball at sea), to the borderline harem of cute guys, and, oh, being a cat. Or was that one just me?

Additionally, one of the other significant changes I'm cognizant of is the main cast that isn't Ichigo. Each girl is a character in her own right and is made loveable and engaging to watch. You care about them. It's a change I really love, Tokyo Mew Mew New feels like a series about all five girls rather than just the one. And, even though Ichigo is still the main character, it's through loving her friends that we as a viewer can relate to her and the way she loves and cares about them. I'm excited to watch season 2 and see more of them all!

TMMN is by no means a perfect series. It's a magical girl show that has a fairly young audience to appeal to, but also the added weight of a dedicated older fanbase, and big shoes to fill. Personally, I think it does a great job of balancing those things. It's a great update that manages to keep all the charm of its source material while making it feel fresh and engaging. It's also, in my opinion, very pretty! Considering the 2002 Tokyo Mew Mew is what got me seriously into anime, TMMN had a lot to live up to for me and I'm delighted to say it's done damn well.

This is going to be a very short one, since I'm only 5 episodes in.

When I was a teen, I tried to whatch de 2000s version multiple times, but I never was able to finish it. The pacing was too slow. This time the plot is going faster and smoother. The best part is the team dynamics and how well their personalities are shown. Every girl has a different work ethic and a personaly fighting style, wich is very fun to watch. Their relationships are developing at a beliable speed from extrangers to coworkers/teammates to friends. The show is able to show all that about ... the stablished members while introducing the new ones and their particular struggles.

I have mixed feelings for the redessings. They look very cute, but the clothes are animated in a way that makes them seem heavy and rigid, instead of flowy, light and confortable for a fight. On one hand, some of the changes, like Pudding new hair style, are very on character and add to the dessing. On the other hand, some of them just look weird, like the shape Mint and Pudding's skirts.

Overall, I think it's a very good show if you like magical girl teams and are looking for a light show.

I didn't watch the original years ago on tv so I don't have any of the nostalgia to influence my review, if that sort of thing matters to you. Tokyo Mew Mew New is good, but nothing spectacular. A few parts are a bit hard to get through and others are very enjoyable throughout. The best things I can say about the show are that the art is nice and the story works. They throw something in at the end that's kind of weird but I wasn't coming in expecting to be blown away either. It's a fun show, assuming that you're into this sort ... of thing it's worth your time.

It's cute and it's fun, what more do you want from this?

If You Like It Then You Should’ve Put a Bell On It.

I have fond memories watching the old 4Kids dubbed “Tokyo Mew Mew” with my sister way back when I was a kid in the mornings before we went to school so I watched “Tokyo Mew Mew New” mainly for nostalgia.

This won’t really be a serious review. It’s a reboot of a manga written in the dark ages of anime and manga fandoms so the writing and characters are very simplistic. It was made mostly as a way to highlight the real world issues of global warming to children alla “Captain Planet” whilst telling ... a magical girl story.
Ichigo is just a normal high school girl on date with her crush until they’re attacked by monsters. Her and five other girls are infused with the DNA of extinct animals, giving them the power they need to fight off evil and the flamboyant aliens trying to destroy the human race.

Overall it’s a very early 2000’s style of anime. Some of the episodes drag and some of the writing feels forced such as the will-they-won’t-they relationship between Ichigo and Ryou and Bu-Ling’s whole character just in general, but the animation is nice, the voice acting and dialogue is fun and it has one hell of an ear-worm of a tune for it’s ED.

Like I said at the beginning I don’t think “Tokyo Mew Mew New” really needs any serious critique. Its very of it’s time (and I’m not really the target audience), but it was at least fun to watch.

I was so Surprised that Mint got her Power in the First Episode instead of the Second from the Original. Ichigo did get her Power in the First Episode just Like the Original. And was Hoping that Berry Shirayuki and Ringo Akai could be in it, so it can be More Awesome when Berry has a Voice Actor. I Like Series just Like the Original
I thought it can be on Funimation, but Oh Well, I may Enjoy on the Company that Made the Familiar of Zero.
And if Cafe Mew Mew is Real, I shall Stop by There and Enjoy it.

This is my first impression of Tokyo Mew Mew since I didn't grow up with the original anime or manga. It's not a boundary breaking series and has every trope typical of 2000s-era magical girl media, yet I still found it engaging. The characters each have their own charm and unique personalities. I found Quiche particularly entertaining as an antagonist and look forward to seeing more of him in the second season. The music stood out to me right away and I constantly get the opening stuck in my head. The only issue I have with this adaptation is the animation. It's very simple which ... works well for the movement, but also comes off as bare-bones. I wish I could've seen more of the outfit detailing since the new animation style oversimplifies the character designs. Overall this is a show I can safely recommend for magical girl fans.

As a mega fan of tokyo mew mew, this is a stunning adaptation, is not just the fact of the cute and childish animation, or the incredible fights, is about the dedication they put it on, bringing back a classic y2k anime is hard thing to do, you have the expectation, but my recommendation is that please let that aside and enjoy it, not just the romance or the funny lovely moments of the characters,we need this kind of awareness in the wordl right now, the contamination is really killing our home, and ourselves, this is a masterpiece ... that brings awareness and kindness, we are equal and mayb epeople would not understand the value of humans or the value of nature, bt you can teach it, with love and patience, and that you are not alone in this amazing path of being alive.
