Stand By Me Doraemon 2

After reminiscing about his late grandmother, Nobita Nobi wishes to see her again and asks Doraemon to return them to the past. Following the wholesome reunion of the two, Nobita's grandmother confesses that she hopes to meet his future bride. Nobita accepts her request out of filial love and quickly scrambles into the time machine as he and Doraemon journey forward in time.

However, when the duo warps to Nobita's wedding day, they discover that the future Nobita is missing from the ceremony! Determined to set things right, Doraemon and Nobita embark on a mission to search for Nobita's future self and encourage him to discover the happiness he deserves.

As someone who has been watching Doraemon since I was a kid, this is very emotional in every spectrum I could possibly describe. Sadly, I wasn’t in the theater for this because I wasn’t feeling like watching the second one. I thought we only needed one Stand By Me movie since the first one was already everything it needed to be. I was sitting at home, browsing Netflix today, and ended up seeing this film in the section. I decided to watch it since my mind had changed, and I was just wondering what the second film was about. The first Stand By Me is ... the first anime movie I have ever cried to, and now this is the third anime media that I’ve officially cried to (the second one is Violet Evergarden). Oh wow, I feel like no matter what age you are, how grown and mature you have become, Doraemon will always make you feel emotional watching it. Especially the Stand By Me movie—this is highly delivered and got me breaking my tear yet again. Watching everything here feels like I’m a kid again, back to where I was, and watching it makes me rethink my purpose in life even more because Doraemon is the source of my life lessons. The reason this series isn’t popular in the West is because it’s not Shonen; it’s more of a general anime that anyone can watch. It’s always going to make you happy. There’s no way the plot is 6 out of 10 like I have read in some critiques of this film. I will admit, the storyline isn’t as robust as the first one because they tend to focus on Nobita and his friends as well as his future, not just the relationship between him and Doraemon. But you can’t say the whole important promise part is average. This is peak writing that every drama and compassionate anime needs to take notes from because, oh my god, I’m tearing up so hard watching Nobita’s character development still at its finest and how the narrative connects to our hearts and emotions so much. You can say anything about any flaws of this movie that count, but Doraemon will forever be a top-shelf anime that I will always be grateful for. Seriously, both Stand By Me movies are worth watching, and this is another one you cannot miss at all. From top to bottom, it’s simply perfect.

... This movie is a true masterpiece, and it is one of the most emotional movies of all times, and it will take you on an emotional roller coaster!

You will love this movie, you will enjoy it and you will cherish it, especially if you are already a Doraemon fan! 3D Animation does not matter!!

This movie is just that good!

But The timeline was a bit confusing for me. Also wish it was a bit slower in pace, with more details on the story.

My overall take: Was not a fan of the first Stand by Me Doraemon, but this one is an improvement.

As its title suggests, this is a sequel to Stand by Me Doraemon (2014). Following the events of that movie, Nobita and Doraemon travel to the future to witness Nobita's wedding, only to find that something has gone drastically wrong. There are a couple of reasons I found this movie to be more palatable than its prequel. For one, it no longer focuses on the "how Nobita and Shizuka got together" narrative, and as a result the unsavory aspects of how Shizuka is handled by the ... story are de-emphasized. Indeed, adult Nobita even raises a concern in this film that might well be on the minds of many Doraemon fans: the fact that Shizuka's decision to marry him can come across as having been made entirely out of pity. For another, whereas Stand by Me Doraemon tried to cram seven individual stories from the manga into a single movie, Stand by Me Doraemon 2 primarily adapts material from only two manga stories, with much more original content in between.

That's not to say that all of this original content is well executed. What is meant to be the emotional climax of the movie essentially involves Nobita's friends undoing a supposedly irreversible situation by emoting very hard. Additionally, for those who can't stand secondhand embarrassment, the sequence where young Nobita takes his adult self's place at the wedding (after aging himself up with the Time Cloth) might be hard to watch, though that at least is presumably the intended audience reaction.

Otherwise, however, I found overall story here fairly solid, with Nobita's grandmother getting to attend the wedding ceremony (something she's expressed interest in ever since the original manga, but never explicitly realized in the franchise until now) and adult Nobita's wedding speech at the end being particular highlights. I do have one final objection to make though: in his speech, Nobita credits his parents and grandmother for raising him, and yet does not acknowledge Doraemon even in passing. Come on now.
