Sakura Momoko Gekijou: Coji-Coji

Essentially a school slice-of-life comedy anime, but distorted and reshaped to fit kind of a European fantasy storybook feel. In some ways it reminds me a little of American cartoons - we're spared the usual smattering of moe-focused character designs and character dynamics. It's interesting as a follow-up to Chibi Maruko-chan - the characters occupy something of a similar social position (kids, in an education system), but the nature of the show's fantasy setting lets things be pushed into slightly weirder settings (such as episodes where all the schoolchildren start to believe some Japanese people from a nearby country are actually Gods, or the human ... character sucked into the fantasy world against his will)

The anime's pacing is kind of bad relative to the manga - what are fairly short chapters may get drawn out into entire episodes, and certain jokes are directly translated to animation in a way that doesn't land as well. About 9 episodes in the humor/quality are kind of all over the place, but there's a surreal quality to everything I really like, and when the anime manages to land a particular story beat or fantasy concept, it feels really memorable and unique. Coji-coji being one of those 'omnipotent but too young/amnesiac to realize it' characters is an interesting contrast against the other characters who are a bit more limited in the extent of their powers or abilities.

I also really like Sakura Momoko's fantasy designs, and the art execution here is generally great.
