Doukyuusei (Movie)

Well I have to say that this was a rather interesting movie, but I need to point out a major flaw. This was simply found rushed to me, as I feel like there was simply not enough time, in that hour to really tell the story. Unlike the manga, there is no real development of their relationship, nor other feelings like jealousy are shown, like it has been in the manga. It's a bit of a shame, since I felt like that is what really made the manga what it is, and it could have been easily incorporated into the movie too. Maybe if this ... made into an anime instead of a movie, then perhaps that cold have been expanded on better.

As for the art, I have to say it was one of a kind, it's certainly not one that I see often. So I really have to say well done to the creators of this, from going out of if you like the norm type of art for anime. I feel like it truly has show something completely different, in comparison to the main stream anime and manga.

The characters were truly adorable. The way in which they interact in an "awkward" way was really sweet. You can see that they are falling for each other, but neither of them seems to know how to go about it. Their character's are truly a gem.

Well overall all I can say is that you need to have a go at this movie, even if there are aspects which some may not find appealing, this is still worth the trouble.

In contrast with ActiveWave's review. if you judge a whole show within a minute of discomfort then that's simply straight-up moronic and overly sensitive. This anime is pretty wholesome compared to that gruesome ActiveWave's review. It was short, and it has very little information about the two characters but for me, the subtleties were enough. Their dynamic interaction was outstanding, it didn't bore me even if there are multiple time skips. It was cute and engaging all throughout. And no. there weren't any scenes that would "highly" discomfort you. Just watch it.

Reminder that you should watch the anime on your own and trust your own ... judgment. Do not let any conservatives like ActiveWave, plant any preconceptions about the show. He's plainly stupid and 250 of them agreed without seeing the show. Pretty pathetic of them tbh.

What I love about this is that it isn't rushed nor have too much sexual scenes like some anime where it fairly focuses on that.

The point here is that it is a soft Yaoi and the way their relationship developed took time if you really take an hour to watch and listen to everything they say

The way they interact to each other tells a lot about their own character and yes they do contrast but that's the fun part. They meet in the middle, can't stop but this movie is ... pretty f*cking great.

I bumped into this looking for good anime movies that were famous during the season. Doukyuusei isn’t on the popular list, but it definitely did not disappoint me.
First off what caught my attention was the style and A-1 studio, which i’m a big fan of, but reading about the actual story made me even more excited to give it a try.

The story, being mainly focused on the boys’ romance was a very good integration of the LGBT community. Specially due to the aversion for it in Japan, categorized as a conservative and traditional country.
If you’re looking for a calm romance, without the drama ... and the love-obstacles that come with it, you’re in the right place.

Art. Even though i expected the traditional style of A-1, the movie gave me more of a lazy-drawn version of it, which i loved anyway. The light animation was perfectly used to reinforce the story and feelings on it.

Characters. We can notice kind of a love cliche right here: one being extrovert, careless, wild. And the other being introvert, in most of the times the brain and shy. But that doesn’t mean it was a bad cliche.
I loved the making out scenes, not passing to the explicit and pornographic side. But being that gentle, timid yet passionate kissing.

I’d definitely grade my enjoyment/overall as a 9. It had the potencial to be a 10, if only they worked a little hard on the animation and the whole production in general.

As someone who experienced a similar romance, I must say this movie encaptures so many wonderful, and heartbreaking, aspects of a gay teen relationship. The hiding, the embarrassment, the uncertainty (that comes with any young love), the internal struggles, the mistakes, the joy. It's all here, and you will not regret watching this film.

I have to say this film is set in a way where people of any sexual orientation would enjoy it!

The art matched the content perfectly...tender and soft. The music was appropriate. The characters may not have been completely rounded out, but I believe it was meant to be that way in order ... for the audience to place themselves in their shoes.

The comedy spread throughout was at the right moments and really makes you laugh out loud.

I've seen some shounen-ai that is oppressive, abusive, and raunchy. This is such a wonderful breath of fresh air that needs to be promoted. WATCH NOW!

To be honest, I've never really tried any shounen ai anime, as I'm more attracted to the opposite version. But I wasn't disappointed when I watched this movie yesterday.


Story (8/10):
The story revolves around two boys who fall in love with each other. They try to keep it secret, but people found it suspicious that a popular guy in a band suddenly became so close with the class nerd. As the story goes on, their relationship becomes more serious. There are two things that bug me, tough.
1. Sajou got kissed by ... Kusakabe for the first time at one point, but I was like... THEY JUST RANDOMLY ASSUMED THEY WERE BOTH GAY OR SOMETHING????
2. I'm upset by the fact that they never made their relationship public. And I wanted the movie to last longer.. it was adorable to watch them care so much about each other.

Art (8/10):
The art is really sketchbook-ish and I really enjoyed it. Don't have much to say about it, only that when they cry it looks like the Niagra Falls. They could've reduced the amount of tears just a bit because I just couldn't feel emotional about them crying. I could only laugh about it lol.

Sound (8/10):
Not much to say about the sound. It's enjoyable. Kusakabe's voice actor was really good at showing emotions within his voice.

Character (9/10):
Kusakabe was obviously my favorite of the two. He's a goofball, always making fun of things, but on the other side he's very emotional. Sajou, however, is very quiet and rather keeps things to himself. The movie really focuses on the two, and the side characters are just a decoration.

Enjoyment (8/10):
I really enjoyed this movie! It's a very lovely story about two guys falling in love and it's very pure (ok some scenes aren't).

If you are like me with anime, If you dont mind to watch a boy's love stories, if you like modest, simple, natural, elegant, etc... then i would recommend you this.
I am not going to tell you this is a yaoi anime (because when i think in yaoi i always think in something more... hard)
The Story its simple, two male classmates who meet because one of them has some problems with reading music (he need it for the school) and the other one helps him.
The art, I love this kind of art, the style and everything. Like i said, i LOVE modest animes.
The ... sound, the ost is not very impressed, natural sounds, soft music. I think its fix perfect with the movie and the style.
The Character, the same, modest and clear, very different. You can see how the fix little by little.
Enjoyment, I really did. But again i must say if you dont like simples anime maybe its not an anime for you. Everything in this movie fix and it has armony. It was really easy to watch and too short :(

OMG best freakin watch movie i watch after (your name) but this movie made me cry the background music had some emotion to it with the leafs around blowing against the wind. I wish their was a part two of this and i would of been hype about it but this movie is classic yaoi love but im a boy not gay. Who ever wrote this is a beautiful movie loved every moment of and another thing i liked about it is that how it had humor in it, passionate, and bravery.Also i liked how it was different type of anime than the regular anime ... because regular anime is kind of cartoonish and this was mature.Thank you for this anime 5/5 star.

Story about growing, knowing your limits, jealousy and love. Your basic romance story where the characters are young. High school setting is very relatable, at least it was for me and it did bring some old memories to my mind. Both main characters are relatable in their own ways. Some might call it generic or even cliche but i enjoyed this movie. Don't take it too serious. Light-hearted fun where you might find something more interesting.

Something bad? Sure, there isn't enough time to explore everything in 60 minutes, Haras feelings and motives, no real "plot" other than the relationship, pacing all over the place, drama ... for dramas sake, but the movie did good enough building the friendship and love between Kusakabe and Sajou so in the end you get a smile on your face. No still means no.

How do i feel about the scene in Haras office? I think it's important that it is shown. Its creepy and wrong but at the same time it is reality for many gay men. You are young and interested in the older guy, etc. Is it rational and can it be explained? No. But maybe you can process your own thoughts trough fantasy like this.

The art style of this movie and the sounds were amazing, highlight for me. It was almost like watching moving watercolor painting. Scene in the bar and the band playing music was pleasing to watch. Art style also resembles manga which is nice.

Obviously not for everyone but watch this if you want to reminiscent old memories, or you are yourself young and maybe going trough similar experience. Communication is key.

I had no idea what I was getting into before I decided to watch Doukyuusei, might even say that I had no expectations whatsoever. The art style was terrible and the characters all looked bland and boring but what waited for me was a simple story of love that I fell in love with. Everything was very simple in this movie, simple gestures, small absolutely normal moments, just your average day to day life, and yet, something about it was so so special. The way the two of them understood each other and ultimately were there for one another made this into the masterpiece it ... is. This anime was so close to reality that you could almost feel like you are there watching young love unfold with your very own eyes. If you have lost your faith in love and the world in general, I recommend you to watch this, because if nothing else, you'd at least know it's not all lost,

Doukyuusei is an amazing movie. It saved Yaoi. I really enjoyed the story and art style. the ending was cute and it made me all fuzzy on the inside. The characters are cute and the interactions were nice too. I rewatched the anime so many times and each time I feel the same, happy and soft. Even the characters were good, the way they interact with each other is amazing, the romance in this anime is cute too, with a little bit of drama to spice it up. If you haven't seen this anime yet watch it, it's worth it.

The story of this character-driven film explores a relationship which blooms between two classmates brought together by rehearsals for their school’s chorus performance. The film was made using the watercolor animation style we’ve seen before in, for example, Wandering Son, a style which was especially put to good use in the numerous humorous scenes. On the audio side, the soundtrack and voice acting are both of a generally high quality.

Doukyusei seems to mirror Junjou Romantica and Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi in its themes (social acceptance of gay relationships, jealousy, insecurity, and separation), characters, and sense of realism, in addition of course to its nature as a ... character-driven, romcom drama. The only fundamental difference I can see is the absence of internal monologues as a narrative device, something which prevented the similarities from becoming overwhelming. The film’s story fits very well into its 60-minute runtime, and the school setting and animation style provide agreeable variations on Junjou's and Sekai-ichi's formula.

The film doesn’t represent much of a step forward from where Junjou Romantica and Sekai-ichi Hatsukoi left the shonen-ai genre, but it proves that their formula still has more to offer.

What I can say for sure is that now I have big interest for this manga. Movie is very good on my opinion. It is light and full of youth spirit... Youth can be stupid and make basic mistakes, you know :) First half of movie caused me a strange perception and I even thought that I probably wouldn’t like the movie in the end... But then it happened. I saw a big potential, which I think is hidden behind just one-hour-beginning, named movie :) I need to know more about these two now. Will definitely read manga later.
About movie itself. Well... What can ... you say about just seed for a whole story..? It's... good? I think, if seed worked, you can say - it's good for sure :D I like psyhology of communication (any types of) very much. This is why for me is more important this side and I don't get hung up on the physical relationships of the characters, even if I watch yaoi. It's a natural part of yaoi anime or manga, after all. And nice addition. But without psyhologie it's nothing (ok, not nothing but something lustful). Don't get it wrong! In this movie you can see no such dirty scenes, just something light and romantic :) It's very calm. Something, what you will watch in rainy day with pleasure :) I rated 7 points for story and characters just because story is a seed as I said and movie ends before characters were revealed to satisfy your curiosity. That's all.
Anyway, if you have time, watch it. It's not something worthless for sure.

I cannot say anything about the manga, since I have not read it.

No, this isn't your basic high school slice of life BL(boys love). Yes, this does have pain, happiness, surprise, and cuteness. This is super fluffy, but it does talk a little bit about sex, no it doesn't happen in the movie if that's what you wanted. This also has a Pedophile scene if that triggers you in any way. Don't worry if you're looking for something happy after you just finished banana fish this is the movie for you. This movie had me smiling for atleast 45 minutes, mind you this movie is ... an hour long.

This movie is not for everyone. This review is going to be bias because of that.

I genuinely loved this movie, it's not the best, and it definitely has flaws. But coming from somebody who isn't easily captivated by slice of life, it impressed me.

The animation was beautifully simple and had a nice, distinct charm to it. Sure, running looked weird, but in a cute way, and the story was just...simple.

That's all this movie is, it is simple, it is calm, it is cute. That is it. It's the type of movie ... you should watch on a bad day, a day where you are lonely or just feel off. If your looking for something groundbreaking, this is not it, and I wouldn’t advise going into it expecting such.

A lot of people give it a bad rap for the main relationship being “messy” and unrealistic. Didn't they explicitly state that this was Kusakabe's first love? The first relationship he was genuinely invested in? Of course there's going to be miscommunication and misunderstandings. He has no real experience, and as far as I, an anime only knows, Sajou doesn’t either.

Now, to end my humble little review, this movie does have one genuinely unique thing to it. The ribbon. I truly loved the way they used the ribbon.

Alright, let's talk about Doukyuusei

It's a movie about 2 polar-opposites classmates, one of them had trouble singing leading to the other helping him sing. It's a shounen ai/bl story that takes place in an all-boys school. I won't really go deep into the story, since I would recommend you watching it yourself.

The art style is a bit different than your usual art style, and the way they animate it is also unique. It depends on you preference but I personally like the art style, it's really beautiful.

The main characters are Kusakabe and Sajou, as I mentioned earlier they're polar-opposites. Kusakabe is more of the free ... and loose type of person, plus he's in a band. Sajou on the other hand is calm, reserved and focuses on his study.

I think about the enjoyment it self depends on if you like the genre, art style, etc. bl is not a genre for everyone, while the story revolves around it. I'm sure for those who enjoy it has been recommended to watch this by someone since it's a pretty popular anime. I personally like the genre so I enjoy watching it.

It's amazing that this story is so simple yet has such strong resonance. Very simple storyline and dialogues as befitting of the slice-of-life genre, it's comforting and strongly cathartic, rather than being overdramatic or obnoxious.

Love, love the art, with the use of watercolors - the faded out textures gives it a warm and nostalgic feeling. The music, which is predominantly acoustic guitar fingerstyle pieces, is also very befitting, not only to the vibe of the story, but also because of one of the central characters, who's a guitarist. One of the more refreshing things about it is that it completely forgoes the 'sparkly' artstyle ... other anime would choose, and whole-heartedly embraces the washed out sometimes even rough watercolor textures, with realistic details such as rusted lockers, seedy bandrooms, forgotten shoes and umbrellas, torn posters, cracked tiles etc., all of which lovingly depicted. It makes the scenes all the more memorable, and also real.

The central characters are wonderful. They are awkward, insecure, nervous, a little dumb at times, but also lovable, emotional and adorably expressive. All in all, the movie is a very relatable and lovely depiction of teenagers in love.

Rewatch worthy (so many times) and also comfort anime. 100% would recommend.

First thing that comes in my mind when I hear BL, Shounen ai and Yaoi are words that are "Disgusting", "Yuck!", etc. I am the type of person who loves straight stories like shoujo, romance, boyxgirl. BUT THIS MOVIE ENTIRELY CHANGED MY VIEW TO BOY'S LOVE and here are the reasons why:

I admit that I'm a girl in the past who loves romantic stuffs and watching anime such as Kimi ni Todoke, Sukitte Ii Nayo, etc. My eldest sister was the first one to recommend me a shounen ai movie which is "Classmate/Doukyuusei", I rejected her request since I'm that typical shoujo otaku. My sister ... said it was a cute love story but I didn't bother to watch it. After a week passed, I saw the trailer in the youtube and I was totally engrossed by the animation style of the movie. Also my favorite V.A. was here, so I watched it.

MY REACTION:
IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT. I was really into the story, the plot, the characters, the romance, the animation and the humor. This is where my adventure of being a fujoshi began (June 12, 2017), I really thought Boys' Love is like hent*i but NOT!!! There is actually a very genuine plot in every BL story. I also initially thought of BL as a sinful act but no. This is like an entertainment or an inspiration for me, the movie was really good and it got me. I may be sinful because I love this genre but this is what makes me happy, I don't know why. Also, the music is freakin' sad but romantic at the same time, I LOVE IT!

RATING:
Overall, I rate this video as 10 because it is very genuine. I felt the sadness, happiness and I fell in love for the two of them. Honestly, this was my first time cheering on to boy's love. This movie really gave me feels and it lets you ride along with the scenes.

Doukyuusei is in many ways an unusual anime. But in the best possible sense of the word.

First off, the visual design combines two almost polar opposite styles, a very minimalistic one, with clear backgrounds, empty faces and choppy animation and an incredibly complex one, with beautifully drawn scenery, detailed character art and intensive full frame animation. While this sort of arrangement isn't unique, Doukyuusei stands out due to the fact that it combines the two into the same image, instead of only switching back and forth based on tone. And instead of clashing, they combine excellently.

This masterful mixing of contrasts continues into the writing, ... with the tone often times rapidly shifting mid-scene, from serious or romantic into comedic and back. And while discontinuous tone most certainly is not rare in anime, in Doukyuusei for the first time ever I have seen it done really well. Instead of ripping the viewer out of the movie with an emotional moment getting interrupted by a gag, here, they managed to make these transitions almost seamless, with the humorous bits always adding to the scene instead of existing to it's detriment.

Another point of note has to be the sound design. While this of course is always difficult to appreciate as non-Japanese, most Anime have a somewhat characteristic performative style of speech, which at times greatly differs from the way people talk in reality. Unusually, in Doukyuusei, the dialogue is instead written and recorded in a very natural modern way. And even if we do not understand the words, we still can appreciate the resulting atypical sound.

If anything, the story might be Doukyuusei's weakest part. It certainly isn't bad, but rather it's quite simple, to the point it could likely be summarized in one or two sentences. I personally do not find this necessarily a point of criticism, though if you don't find yourself enchanted by the presentation, you might perhaps consider the movie somewhat boring.
That said, and while they certainly do not dwell long on setting up character motivation or conflict, the emotional core behind the love between our two main characters is brought across very clearly and elegantly.

doukyuusei is exactly what you should watch if you're looking for a lighthearted, soft bl movie. it explores the story of how two classmates, seemingly polar opposites, end up together. it encapsulates what two high school boys, unfamiliar with the concept of loving someone their own gender, go through. they both do make some dumb choices as any teen would, but it does get resolved in the end. this movie showcases what young love is like: yearning, miscommunication, and purity. the art style is unique and may take some time to get used to, but overall, a 10/10 for me!

- the boys do not ... go past kissing, the most they do is really just making out.
- there IS a NONCONSENSUAL kiss, not between the two boys, but between one of the boys and a minor character. if watching this might affect you negatively, *please do what's best for you*.
