I know, I know. How could I rate something by Ghibli so low?
One reviewer even said it was on par with their other works! Rather that review was serious or not, I have to disagree.
First off, the art is okay for a "made for kids" television short. Not great, not good, just okay. That's fine though, as obviously that wasn't the focus here.
But then, just what was the focus? The story is simple, the characters aren't memorable. Sure, they are memorable in the sense of "there was a fox in this short", but not memorable in a sense of actual character work. Again, story
and characters probably aren't the focus of a less than 2 minute short either.
If I had to wager a guess, I'd say this short was made solely for the purpose of being pleasant for any young viewers watching at home between TV programs. In that regard, it's successful.
This is a pleasant short with a relaxing song playing in the background. If you never end up watching it, you aren't missing out. If you do decide to spend a minute of your time, you'll get a pleasant short that might not stick with you for what it was, but for the relaxed feeling it gave you.
Even if only for a little while.
