Short, loser-ish protagonist that grows into his role as a hero? Check. Emphasis on the importance of being a man and the virtues of such? Check. Combine to form awesome fighting mechs? Check. Fighting to save humanity from countless alien robots? Check.

space fight for the survival of the human kind...

Harem series with mecha action and big ships.

Both are space related with a few romances here and there. Mechs are another similarity and there is a vast exploration of planets and locations out there. Difference is one is a series and the other is a H-series, 'Vandread' actually focus on romantic scenes more often than you think and battles second. 'Uchuu no Stellvia' is a hardcore action H-series that has a bit of everything from tentacles to animals. Fighting is not the main focal point here so anyone who wants to dream of hot ladies will not be disappointed in these two series.

Interstellar action. lol, Spaceships, action, and comedy.

If I had a nickel for every time a mecha anime featured transformation mechanics requiring both a male and female pilot positioned in rather suggestive layouts in the cockpit, I'd have at least 2 nickels, which is not a lot but it's weird that it happened at least twice. These titles have it. Pilots in both stories also live in radically different societies than the norm, societies ruled by mysterious "Grandpa" / "Grandma" figures. In both instances the mechs are used to fight enemies of unknown origin and subsequently lead the pilots to go down a path of discovery about their unusual worlds.

Men and Women are separated initially. They fight in mechs that combine in an orgasmic way. In vandread the enemy is harvesting human beings for their body parts whereas in aquarion they're harvesting humans for their life energy.

The Space-type setting and 3D Battle Animations, combined with 2D character settings make these two Anime similar.

Both series were created by Gonzo and offer similar-looking 2D and 3D animation. These TV shows are of the sci-fi genre, featuring edge-of-your-seat (and often over-the-top) action sequences of 3D mechs and/or starships.

Vandread and Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio: Ars Nova are science fiction theme series involving a war. Both series has a dominant female cast where its characters are skilled in the art of war. They are able to engage in battles, formulate strategies, and dominate in the waters/space. Both series involves battleship warfare with advanced technology and weaponry for supremacy. The main male character becomes part of a crew and commands his comrades into battle.

The usage of mecha and science fiction warfare is present in both series. Vandread and Kurogane no Linebarrels both plays the usage of these themes throughout episodes starring the main protagonist. The main protagonist in both series are hotheaded but have a sense of justice and pride. They meet a strange girl and later forms a special bond with theme. Both series' main protagonist attracts the attention of several female characters throughout the series. Both series has a more complicated plot as the episodes progresses. Both series has emotional moments that is mixed in with drama, comedy, and romance later on.

Mechas fighting overpowered tentacle monsters in space. The monsters threatening to obliterate humanity.

You should give Vandread a try if: > you enjoyed the gendered aspect of Simoun's worldbuilding but wished it was furthered developed, explored the other side more, and had interactions beyond fighting & "the war"; > wished for a more eventful plot than patrol missions; > wanted to see more variety in mecha/vehicle design. I rewatched the beginning episodes of Vandread for this, and I'd recommend giving the first 3-4 episodes a watch as you'll get a pretty good understanding of what to expect from the rest of Vandread's 2 seasons. If you enjoyed the first few episodes, you'll probably enjoy the rest. It's also got a decent  read more

If you want an anime with a group of elite space pirates comprised completely of women, look no further than either Vandread or Sol Bianca. Vandread has men join the crew at the beginning however, and has quite a light-hearted/comedic tone, although that's not to say Sol Bianca is dead serious either. If old-school OVAs are your thing, you can't go wrong with Sol Bianca, and if you want brighter colors and don't mind dated 3DCG, Vandread may interest you.

The premise is similar, two pilots of giant mecha can combine (Vandread is a physical combo, whereas in Buddy Complex it is mentally). Both anime feature a male lead, and follow their journey with a group of friends and allies to stop an enemy.

Mecha, girls, action, drama, and comedy, what else could you ask for more? Both of these series contain plenty of action and even fan-service. Both series also has romance that are explored in the story and there are emotional drama as episodes progresses. Great series for mecha fans.

Both male characters are strong and unwilling to give up. Both are set in an area with advanced tech. Both male leads don't focus on the females around them, but are somehow unable to *escape* them. Either way they are willing to stay and fight for their own and others sakes.

If you seek similair feel of cheesy quazi-harem with minimalstic plot and a big chunk of fanservice in mecha setting - here you go.

vandread might be old, but its still a good anime and its worth the time to watch it. both mecha anime and it both have interesting stories

One ship against alien army in space with mecha battles. The main lead being a guy with harem and a girl with obsession over the "harem" guy who doesn't seem to care...atleast not at the beginning ;).

very similar in the idea, hot girls and good angles, stratos 4 doesnt have a guy on the lead like vandread, but its still a good serie to watch, they are both fun and both have a good story

Vandread and Full Metal Panic are both mecha action comedies with some romance mixed in here and there. I think these two series are similar to each other and are some of my favorite mecha series. Each series deals with a main character having to learn to adapt to new surroundings, people, and life style. Vandread its guys being thrown into an all girls world and in FMP its him being thrown into school life from military life.

In both the MC happens to come across a mecha and without any former training can plot it like a pro and ends up aboard a pirates ship with good hearted crew

Vandread is in space, but both involve aliens and a genki/air-head character. Vandread has that same harem type feel, and both have the saving the "world" plot. Neither anime are a serious type; they're more of a laid back watch. Each are relying on a guy who is perfect for getting the job done.

Space battles against overwhelming forces. Ecchi and romantic themes. the drama of loss , and the combonations the mecha can perform.

Vandread is Gall Force's aesthetic successor, pitting women against men in a post-apocalyptic future.

Both have a Hero/Heroin who wants to save the world using giant robots controlled by their own hands

Robots, Young pepole. robots and love. They are similar yet very differant.

Mecha series filled with action, romance, and drama. Both of these series involves the fusion of mecha machines into a stronger entity to fight against the enemy. The main character from being zero to hero. Throughout the series, both main character learns more about themselves and their origin. Of course there is romance, drama, and among other things.
