Both series is a bit old (20-40 years), with similar art. Each show has a young hero with a half-eyed and nearly unbeatable enemy, and has lost a parent, while he was young. The story is realistic, but just for a time being.

Both series are from the same era (Genshi Shonen Ryu from 1971 and Gamba no Bouken from 1975) and have a quite similar plot: A young hero fight against a big threatening enemy. They are very dark and bloody at times.

Both settings have dinosaurs.

If you're a fan of early Toei anime, I'd definitely recommend Ryu to fans of the '72 Devilman and vice versa! Both are animated in the same way and both have the similar a bit repetitive plot at times. Also Ichiro Mizuki sings the banger openings of the both series!
