List of the 50 best Anime Movies.
Does not include movies closely related to an existing series (aka sequels/prequels/side stories) so you can watch everything in the list without watching a series prior to it.

Keep in mind, that the industry isn't that old yet and unlike normal Anime, the movie industry didn't explode in the last few years so these are basically all the good movies that currently exist.

List is based on:
- stats (mainly MAL score, favorites and popularity)
- awards
- other peoples opinion (reviews, opinions I've heard on Youtube,...)
- personal opinion (can be seen on "list view", which should be the standard one)

Studio Ghibli is without a doubt the most popular Anime Movie studio and also the only one that created a lot of movies. I've excluded the few bad/mediocre ones so I recommend any listed here. The first 4 are generally seen as the best ones, the rest has no order.

General list order:
- Ghibli movies
- Makoto Shinkai movies
- Mamoru Hosoda movies
- Satoshi Kon movies
- other movies

*All info texts assume you watch the movies with the original audio (Japanese)*

GKIDS is an American film distributor based in New York with, according to the Los Angeles Times, a focus on "sophisticated, indie" animation. GKIDS releases critically acclaimed mostly hand-drawn, international films—such as the works of the independent Japanese anime studio Studio Ghibli—to North American audiences. GKIDS also distributes computer animated and stop-motion films in addition to hand-drawn ones, as well as American films by independent filmmakers. The name is said to be an acronym for "Guerrilla Kids International Distribution Syndicate".

In this list are those anime that have been distributed by the distributor GKIDS.

Some lesser known anime that I really like and think more people should watch! Includes both shows and movies.

"Lesser known" to me is going to be defined as any show with under 400,000 viewers listed on MAL from now on, to prevent me from filling this list with just shows that I like but aren't really "lesser known".

This is a list of the Most Unique Anime at least for the time it came out. Anime that tells a story in a completely new way or popularizes a gene or theme are more likely to be featured. This list has an extra preference for anime with strange plot and unsettling elements, including anything considered edgie. Plot and Message are valued highly, especially is expressed in a completely new way. Anime that is commentary on a gene or trope are also preferred on list. Commonly features stories that are dark or cruel in nature, but there are plenty of anime on the list that are not.

List is ordered with a balance between uniqueness and user score.

I plan on keeping this up to date. Please reach out if you feel an anime should be added/removed and why. Thank you :)

Anime where suffering (psychological, emotional, or physical) is a recurring theme.

Includes each of the ‘main’ instalments of the listed media.

P.S. don’t take this too seriously, these shows have a lot more to offer than just the suffering factor, I just thought it would be an interesting list to make :)

The idea: Listing lesser known movies or at least not wanting to include big studio Ghibli titles, Shinkai, Satoshi Kon or Hosoda movies.
Some of these titles might be more familiar than others. I myself haven‘t watched the first six movies on this list either.

I have to admit tho, I tricked you. I smuggled in one Ghibli movie. One, people nearly ever talk about. It‘s not by Miyazaki but by Takahata: Omoide Poroporo, featuring czech folk music and some magic through its down to earthness.

Enjoy!

This list is for anime where a character possesses powers (or has an object that grants them said supernatural powers), but those abilities end up doing more harm than good for them.

From mild annoyances to catastrophic and life-changing tragedies, you can bet that these characters are far from thrilled by their circumstances.

Anime where the vast majority of the cast have natural hair colours (brown, black, blonde, ginger, etc.), but one of them was just born with brightly coloured hair (bonus points if there’s no explanation and nobody ever questions it).

Anime where you wouldn't expect, from the promotional image on MAL, that they may contain some heavy and intense stuff. Also, these anime are often lighthearted, comedic, or dramatic all while with psychological subtext.

WIP so feel free to suggest things

A list of anime movies that are both appropriate to watch with your parents, and that they would probably enjoy!

I have watched a lot of these with my parents to at least moderate success!

Not including Ghibli movies because all of them would be on this list otherwise.

We only sell anime that makes you cry here.

If you watch anything on this list, be prepared to bawl.

This differs from my suffering list, as not all of these are “cruel”. Rather, many might even make you cry because of how sweet they are.

Each entry is labeled with “wholesome”, “heartbreak”, or “both” to symbolise why you will be left in tears afterwards.

*Note these are just based on my own and the general community’s experiences. If you are particularly resistant to crying while watching movies or shows, some of these might not work for you.
