ok so thanks to devilman: crybaby coming out, i'm seeing devilman everywhere. but no one's posting any of the graphic/sex/gory/horror stuff. it's all focusing on akira & the other guy. i couldn't get past the club scene in the first ep

there's not enough reviews of all the iterations of devilman for me to tell if anything is "tamer" in comparison. idek where to start looking to find out what timestamps to skip

yes, i understand that it's supposed to be a graphic horror story but that's not everyone's cup of tea. i'm sure i can follow the story without having to look at that stuff

the gore is not even that extreme because of the abstract art and animation, and as far as i remember only episode 1 has much more detailed gore to be honest

I know you have your preference not to like that stuff but it'l littered through out the whole series and the entire franchise. The sex and violence are the biggest visual themes of the series. You'll end up just seeing fragments and partials and not really understanding what's going on. You should probably just skip it.

If you'd like to skip all the gore, violence and sex, you wouldn't understand what the hell is going on. Just watch as it is or don't do it at all.

There is no way to enjoy the core themes of this work without accepting the dark side of it. It's a necessary literary element, and then as well as trashy fan service.

Skip this series. Doesn't sound like it's right for you.

Skip this series. It isn't good for you. I don't know why you would be interested. Sometimes the big title of the year just isn't for you. It has happened to me several times. You could, if you really wish, watch series which were inspired by it, but even those have central themes of sex and violence (Berserk, Evangelion) . If a limb doesn't get chopped off, or a person doesn't have sex in the series, it prob isn't devilman enough to call itself inspired.=

Maybe watch Cutey Honey if sexy stuff doesn't bug you. It is even harder to take seriously... and if you really want to get down, do something inspired by Cutey Honey- like Sailor Moon. Then they sexy stuff should be pretty tame.

You absolutely cannot follow Devilman without the violence and sex. It is what it was made to do. Shock people.I guess when you invent the ecchi genre.... people will always be shocked. Somehow it shocks people every decade. I don't get it. XD Devilman does appear in the Cutey Honey franchise though.

its a nagai Show can not make more simply
"If you tremble with indignation at every injustice, then you are a comrade of mine"

When the union's inspiration through the workers' blood shall run
There can be no power greater anywhere beneath the sun
Yet what force on earth is weaker than the feeble strength of one
For the Union makes us strong

Devilman was made in direct response to the horrors of the Vietnam war and was made in such a way as to present the true depth of evil that humanity is capable of. To take away this aspect of it would be to take away the entire meaning of it's core message. Go Nagai made this because he didn't want people to hide from the truth. Censorship of violence in media and on the news was a large subject of debate on a global scale at the time of the writing of Devilman and Nagai's camp feared the detachment that this censorship would foster. It is this kind of detachment that allowed atrocities like Vietnam as well as those found in Nagai's story to occur. Evolution on a societal level cannot occur if we do not recognize the issues, looking away from the gore doesn't change a thing. Feeling the disgust of these scenes is what Nagai wants to share with you and is also why Devilman is still remembered and celebrated over 40 years later as a timeless piece of social commentary that is still relevant in modern society.

Also I find the manga to be the superior of all Devilman formats and also opposed to how many others feel I find the OG manga to be more brutal than Crybaby. Crybaby was more of an action story with elements of social commentary while the OG Devilman manga is more of a social commentary piece with elements of action. Also Ryo's character sucked in Crybaby, much better in 1972.

Without violence, there is no Devilman. If you for some reason don't want to watch/read fictional violence, you're going to have to pass on this.
You all need to watch Nami.

I know this is like 5 years old lol, but the gore and horrer and violence of devil man is a major theme of the story. How humans are weak creatures who are evil in nature. Skipping the violent parts, or ignoring them, would be like skipping the whole story.
