Ignoring a Naruto movie and Ashita no Joe (not a series about prison life, but the lead does spend time in prison), the only two prison anime in known existence. Shawshank Redemption they most certainly are not. But Rainbow at least tries to be taken semi-seriously with its 1950's setting and anti-moe 'WHERE GIRL?' approach to prison life. Deadman, on the other hand, blends a prison theme park (!?) and shounen power-ups into a bizarre yet entertaining mix. Shallow and with little planning beyond shock value, but definitely fun. Rainbow does, deceptively, seem like it's actually going to be anime's attempt at one-upping Shawshank at   read more

Both use a Prison setting. Rainbow is based in a realistic setting, set in the 1950s and following the lives of young criminals. Deadman Wonderland is more science-fiction, set in the future and a prison that serves as an amusement park. Both series have a dark atmosphere that stems from their location.

These anime are both about prisoners. Rainbow is more realistic in my opinion. Deadman Wonderland on the other hand, has more gore and exciting action scenes.

The both of them about the young prisoners and hardship of prison life.

Think of Deadman Wonderland as a much more violent version of Rainbow and has more action. It's also better than Rainbow.

The setting of both series is quite similar involving the prison theme and feeling of being under confinement and under watch. And of course, in prison, the reality is harsh. The main characters in both series endure cruelty inflicted by others but at the same time also makes bonds with the prisoners. There is violence, drama, and psychological themes in both series that confines the realism of being a prisoner.

They are both set in a prison and have the same dark theme. The prisoners both get treated very poorly. Deadman Wonderland is more science fiction because of the powers they posses while Rainbow is more realistic as it tells the story of young prisoners taking place in 1955.

+ They both involve groups of teenagers being abused in prison and they're plans to escape. + They people must bond together and use their different skills to escape + Both are very dark and include some very mature themes - But Rainbow is set in the mid-1950s in Japan while the country is still struggling after WW2 and it is very realistic whereas Deadman Wonderland is set in a post-apocalyptic near-future where people can have supernatural powers. - The characters in Rainbow are much better and not as annoying; overall, Rainbow is a much better anime.

Both settings are in prisons that are hell and morbid. Both shows, show how our characters persevere through the darkness.

Both anime feature teenage protagonist who end up in prison. Both anime have similar elements, such as unlikely friendships, escape plans and corrupt prison wardens. The main difference between the two anime is that Rainbow is realistic, while Deadman Wonderland has supernatural elements.
