MI was quite popular here in France in the late 80s/early 90s, but under a stupid French name. Many people over 45 still remember it.
They butchered the anime though with absolutely no respect for the original work, thinking they could turn it into some cheap comedy cartoon for kids. Everything has been overly localized (all the characters names were changed), lots of scenes of people drinking alcohol were removed, and the voice acting was especially garbage (English dub is gold compared to this).
The opening is so cringe that I think it can be turned into a powerful tool of torture for anyone speaking French lol (/watch?v=mJx0NQsmbL8)

Glad you liked it. People might be afraid to pick it up, thinking it's dated and too long to invest time watching it at first sight, but the blend of comedy/drama/romance is just perfect and the characters feel very human.
Curiously enough, I've seen a lot of MAL users with Maison Ikkoku and LoGH in favourites.
