By the way, I love your anime list layout. Did you make it yourself? :O

I've been thinking about society external to Japan as well. I don't think the show mentioned about the state of the rest of the world. If it's true that the rest of the world is not in a totalitarian state, I find it hard to believe that action had not already been taken against Japan. Though, there could be many complications that come with neutralizing a dictatorship (See: North Korea).

The sense of security instilled by the Sybil System must have conditioned society to have complete trust in the flawlessness of said system. That said, even if there were individual people in the crowd who realized what was happening, I doubt anybody would be able to speak up, for fear of being doubted by the majority of onlookers, as well as standing out as an abnormality and being judged by the system.

I agree that a different focus of the show would be much more interesting. That's part of the reason why I didn't give the show a 10/10. However, from the director's point of view, such a story has a higher chance of being a complete flop (in terms of BD sales). A straightforward story is more easily accepted by the general market. Also, it would be hard not to make it seem like a ripoff of George Orwell's 1984, as similar as it is already.

Same can be said with Shin Sekai Yori. At first I thought the focus would be on the post-apocalyptic society, but I guess not.

That's an interesting way of perceiving the ending, I didn't think of that. Then again, as Akane said, their society is completely reliant on the Sybil System. Overthrowing the system would throw the society into chaos, and the damage might outweigh the benefits.

HanatanIsMyWaifu | 05-12-13, 1:46 PM
Yeah, in a sense the Sybil System did win. Then again, the anime didn't really focus much on the system/society as a whole, and more on the conflict between protagonist and antagonist. I kind of wanted them to shift the focus on trying to overthrow the system, but at the end there wasn't much conclusion in that area. The Chief of the Bureau just disappeared near the end too.

If they ever do a second season, it would be nice to see them fight against the government/system.

Who do you define as the bad guys? The Sybil System?

HanatanIsMyWaifu | 05-11-13, 9:28 PM
Yeah, IT'S SO DARK AND TRAGIC

HomuraIsMyWaifu | 04-24-13, 8:15 PM
