The story follows a boy named Muoru who has been falsely arrested and sent to a cemetery to perform forced labor. There, he calls himself the "grave keeper" and meets a beautiful girl named Meria. Muoru becomes fascinated with Meria as he spends his days digging a hole containing the undead monster named "The Dark."
Sugar Dark is a fairly short manga, consisting of only 19 chapters. However, the problem with shorter series is that the story doesn't really have enough time to fully develop. Now that being said, the pacing of the story wasn't perfect, but I felt that they did a pretty good job with it. Maybe it could've been longer, but the ending was satisfying to me.
Story - 8/10: Alright so the story begins with a 16 year old male who is a criminal, and he ends up doing forced labor at a cemetery. He ends up meeting a mysterious girl, who's the gravekeeper. It starts off
as a boy meets girl kind of scenario, but the story shifts towards a darker theme. The mysterious element to the story is what kept me interested, although the story seemed a bit rushed at the end. But overall, it's a nice and short manga, with a bit of mystery, supernatural, and romance mixed in there. Maybe it could've been longer, but it was still pretty enjoyable.
Art - 9/10: I enjoyed the art, it was fairly detailed and was nice to look at overall. Some of the scenes get pretty graphic later on, so watch out for that if you aren't a big fan of gore.
Character - 7/10: The characters were pretty interesting, although it didn't really bring anything new to the table. The protagonist is somewhat generic for a manga, although I did enjoy the feelings put into the characters. Maybe it's just me, but I thought the mangaka did a nice job of portraying the character's emotions in this manga.
Overall - 8/10: So overall, this manga was a nice short read to end off my night. It's not too long that you'll get tired of it, but it's not so short that it's underdeveloped. If you enjoy mysteries and don't mind some darker themes, then you might enjoy this one.
A short, but brilliant manga that combines horror, mystery and romance together in an awesome package. Perhaps the most refreshing thing about this story is that the protagonist is a relatively smart and decisive type of fellow - he doesn't sit back and let events happen around him only to be drawn into them, instead he figures out what it is that he wants to do and then pursues it. After reading so many crappy romance manga with wimpy or sad-sack protagonists, Muo from Sugar Dark is the type of guy that you really want to cheer for.
I particularly loved the spooky atmosphere of
the earlier and middle arcs of this manga and how the mystery around everything unfolds at a steady pace. I never felt like the story despite being short was too rushed, and while I did predict what the ending was going to be, I felt satisfied seeing it play out.
If you're looking for a good short read, I highly recommend this manga. You won't be disappointed by it.
