Hello there, and welcome to my MAL page. I'm no good with gfx or photoshop, so you're not going to see a whole bunch of pretty images and the like; instead, there will be a huge wall of text! :)
Anyways, about me: I am currently a college student studying informational science and data management (I am very new to this area of study, so don't expect me to be an expert yet). In case you're curious, what I'm studying is basically what Nagato Yuki from the anime "Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu" does, except without the manipulation of space and time, or whatever fantasy element the show also added.
Anime is definitely my biggest hobby, and I am a firm believer in supporting the artists. Although I am a poor college student who can't even find a job due to my busy scheduling (trust me, my programming classes are super demanding), I always try to buy some anime products at least a few times every year. That being said, with my busy schedule, I don't have the luxury to watch anime as often as I did before :< Enough digression, back to the topic. I love supporting the anime industry because I firmly believe that good anime artist deserve every ounce of penny that they should get. Yes, almost all of the shows on my list were watched through the distributions of fansubs, but I always buy the DVD's of my favorite shows (such as Lucky Star and Darker Than Black) whenever I can afford them. In addition, I feel like a valuable member of the anime society whenever I do buy their products. As the old capitalist saying goes, "The customer is God", I feel like an important contributor to the anime producer's happiness. Put yourself in their shoes; they work long hours (Japan is known for that) with low wages (there was a link that specified so... if I can find it, I'll post it here). I think the least I can do to show my appreciation is by supporting them as much as possible.
As for what kinds of anime I like, I admit that is a tough question to answer. One of my friends in real life once pointed out to me that my favorite anime are either the overly cute ones (Lucky Star, Hidamari, Ichigo Mashimaro etc.) or the overly dark ones (Darker Than Black, Shigofumi, Jigoku Shoujo series, etc.). However, that's not necessarily true. To go over what makes a good anime, I will have to start from the beginning.
What makes a good anime? Some say it's the wonderful cast of seiyuus that bring life into the characters. Others say anime is a form of art, so good art is what makes an anime a good anime. Others point out that the anime music industry is huge, so good music is what makes a good anime. Still, there will be many more who have different opinions on what makes an anime good. I agree that all of the above make good points, but it is possible that an anime that has good art, music, etc. but in the end still fails to impress me. How I view anime is really simplistic, and that is defining anime from its inception: anime is a form of entertainment. To put it simply, as long as an anime entertains, that is all that it really needs to get a good score from me.
A good anime is one that will make me cry, laugh, think, or just remember it in one form or another. Generally, slice of life anime are very relaxing and sometimes comedic; that is entertainment to me. I don't care if slice of life anime don't have real plot or have bad art; if I feel less stressful or more rejuvenated after a long day of programming or doing mathematics, that's all that it takes to fulfill me. Then again, there are also some bad anime that unintentionally entertained me (Mars of Destruction. If any of you are wondering why I gave that anime a rather good score of 6, that is the reason). In the end, if I'm entertained, then it's all good.
To move away from that discussion though, what I personally like the most in any kind of anime is its music. I usually have at least one song on my iPod from each anime I've seen. If I do not have a single song from a series, then it is very likely that my enjoyment in the anime will drop considerably. Nonetheless, an anime can still earn good scores from me if it entertains me in the end. Also, on a more random note, I love collecting character songs :P
Well, that pretty much wraps up my otaku side. Anything else you'd like to know, just drop by a comment or something; I don't bite (usually... unless you're a troll or a flamer who is intolerant of other people's views). Random friend requests are generally accepted, but I would appreciate it if you at least try to get to know me first. If I find people abusing this privilege, then I will update my stance as I see it accordingly. So far though, I have no problems with random friend requests, though. Anyways, if you read through all of that, I applaud you :)
Below are just some other random stuff, such as my beloved wife here on MAL, Miyako from Hidamari Sketch :)

Eh, he didn't do it *for* you. I just didn't see any reason I should take credit for his picture find.
Canaan started really kick ass but it starts to slow down later on it felt like in some ways. It's still an action anime, just I do feel it mellowed out a bit compared to those first couple episodes.

Some stuffs happen but since you didn't like it, I guess you won't care if you miss something
But I guess it's best for you to take a break from slice-of-life anime for now (:

Ooooo. Watching CANAAN. Good choice.
Hakko was my favorite character. I had an avatar of her for awhile on CB.

The third season of Aria is the best so maybe you could skip the to 3rd season.

I was talking about the kind where nothing happens. Sketchbook was like that for the most part so I don't see why you don't like Aria. I guess because the girls aren't loli-ish enough for you

You seem to like the slice-of-life comedy anime but not the real slice-of-life anime.

I guess you aren't really a slice-of-life fan then

Why are you mad at him now?
I've only seen 2 episodes of the 2nd season. I don't have much time for anime anymore. Yeah, I don't really like Suou. I want Yin back
|

I could write much the same post back to you. :-P
Edit: Oh, I do have to ask how Kuroshisuji was. I'm only halfway through it because the show wasn't being subbed reliably so I put it on hold awhile back.

BTW, I hope you're enjoying this "spirited" discussion as much as I am. :D You seem to get upset rather easily at talking to me in them, but then you keep right on replying to me. I just hope you remember you're always free to stop on your own accord.

I didn't recommend any of those shows because I figured you'd start watching one and then drop it because you found it boring. SEL is a love-it-or-hate-it anime like FLCL, and while I liked Texhnolyze I hated the ending. You've expressed a lack of interest in series in the past because they weren't cute girl comedies, and it's a commitment to start watching a series as long as LotGH or Monster. Plus, after what happened with Shigurui you stopped taking recommendations in general from me. If the fact both Monster and LotGH are counted on Hira's favorites list hasn't made you look into them more I don't see how I could convince you further.
If you're arguing that one person (RealityEX) knows more than another person about anime (me or you) the number and variety of shows is a little more important than number of hours. He only beats me in time because he has both DragonballZ and Pokemon in their entirety watched, and I think you'll agree neither of those shows is exactly Earth-shattering in their prose (literal jokes about breaking planets in DBZ notwiithstanding).
There are 40 anime on MAL labeled at "psychological".
http://myanimelist.net/anime.php?tag=psychological
How many have you seen? I count 25 for myself. Most I haven't are Evangelion movies, one of which is not even out.
As for Hell Girl, I never said anything about doing the entire plot in three episodes, I said they should have started the main plot after the first three episodes, BIG difference. My point is you can skip the first six or seven episodes in Season 1 and miss NOTHING in terms of the overall story, because those early episodes are as generic and formulaic as Evangelion's Monster-of-the Week storyline we spent most of the early series watching. When the opening episodes of a show can be treated as filler, you have script problems. That's when we're either supposed to be in character development or have jumped into the main storyline (to fill in the character bits as we go along if we're using that story structure).
"I heard you're a supermod on CB now..."
Yes, you did -- because I told you! Is your memory really that idled?
"As for MAL scores, LUCKY STAR beats them both! Try loling at that, LS hater."
I *am* loling. You were the one who was trying to use MAL scores in this argument. What are you saying now? You agree with me and it was a bad idea after all? : D
"Also, 7.93 is a bad score on MAL now?"
No, but if you're going to hold up Hell Girl's MAL score as some bastion of the quality of writing you can't dismiss FLCL as being as worthless as you say when it outscores Hell Girl. Your statements are contradicting each other.

LOL. In case you forgot, one thing I've been trying to get you to do is watch more drama and psychological anime. I'm not going to be lectured on what those are by a guy who main anime interest is loli comedies, and hasn't watched a single thing by Satoshi Kon, or any of the following titles:
- Monster
- Legend of the Galactic Heroes
- Serial Experiments Lain
- Texnolyze
- Ergo Proxy
I know there's supposedly an overreaching plot to Hell Girl, and I may have started to see that show up around the time I dropped it, but it shouldn't have just then been showing itself is my point. When you have a finite amount of time to tell a tale you don't play a cookie-cutter script show after show and then begin to develop the story that far in -- that's POOR story pacing: pure and simple. Think how much more involved the tale could have been if we'd started to have the dots connect themselves a bit more at episode 3 or 4, not 9 and 10. Is it really necessary to have it hammered into our heads that many times how the damn contract works before we move on? No!
It doesn't matter if it takes 20-30 episodes for the story to get going in Legend of the Galactic Heroes, because a) we're trying to describe the political situation of the entire colonized universe (that requires time) and b) we have f***ing 80 more episodes to tell the story!
You can't build a deep story in a single episode, that's what makes them "deep" -- they require time to fully articulate. What you're describing are "serious" plots, not "deep psychological" stories.
As for MAL scores:
Hell Girl, Season 1: 7.93 average score
FLCL: 8.23 average score
Only a fool wields MAL scores as a weapon. That sword has two cutting edges. ;)
Remember we're talking about a website where the number of "helpful" to "not helpful" marks a review gets is inversely proportional to how seriously the reviewer takes his job.

I watched *10* episodes of Hell Girl before I dropped it. That's almost half the series! If a series is two seasons long and you can watch half of it without the plot really progressing, it means the show should have been one season to start with. And DtB similarly seemed to reset plot-wise after every story arc, although the arc were 2-3 episodes instead of single episodes like Hell Girl.
