I love your comment on Cbubbles's profile. Kyon really made the show, as his sort of passive resistance to the antics created rather than the usual apathy to some girl being a bitch. I mean, he's quite the pussy, but he's got the guts to yell back at her. I have to say he's got the most likable perverseness of any character ever, he's not out looking for shimapan to sniff, but he certainly makes decisions off of quick superficial quirks. His actions in quandaries just nabs the show. Kyoto really deserves their cred here, but the pretentious style of episode order (greed too) really pissed me off.
I'll agree with that. A lot of his stuff seems to be epic in scope for the sake of it. I liked Nausicaa, my favorite of his movies so far, but more in spite of his thematic interests and storytelling than because of it.
The problem is as good as the animation and art direction was, I felt the narrative was very rote and detail-oriented, more than visually oriented. Lots of dialogue, lots of "why"s "when"s and "but"s. Maybe you think I "watched it wrong", but this is a problem I had with Mononoke as well. Different kind of movie, but another really messy plot that didn't grab me at all.
If I'm just supposed to take it in, go pure surrealist/abstract.
Also, I'm pretty opinionated so I urge you not to take it personally if I diss some show or movie you like.
"You cannot knock the visuals in spirited away." I didn't. And anyway, I found the plot to be poorly conceived and redundant. Not one, but two ooze-spewing monsters, the protagonist instantly forgives the old lady's twin after nearly killing her friend, I didn't feel the childhood bond between the two protagonists one bit, etc. etc. Just seems like a mess to me. If Miyazaki took a more purely symbolic route I think it would have worked out more, because I've never found any of his plots compelling.
Anime "fandom" isn't really something I've immersed myself in much, so to me Lucky Star is just a dumb charming lighthearted comedy. I'm sure not really knowing any fans helped my perceptions of it.
Oh, definitely. It's just that at the end of the day, I'd rather watch something like Azumanga Daioh or Lucky Star (is that gonna get me crucified?), because that kinda thing seems way more confident in what it wants to be, and takes itself less seriously.
