Thanks for clearing some things. I'll make some adjustments to the Spike Spiegel past part but my opinion that his relationship to Julia still stands.

Well-said. I think this is a good place to end.

I still disagree with some of your points but I have to give you max props for being one of the few to give substantive reasons why Evangelion falls short on any capacity. I will need to rewatch the series as well

Oh, tanks mon. Let's get down

It's true that a budget shouldn't be an excuse for error but like I said, considering there was a budget in the first place makes the final product that much more remarkable, given the degree of content and the conclusion at hand.

There's a lot more world-building in Eva than you're letting on. Besides what you've noted, virtually every facet of the series is brimming with detail. We learn the nature of the Eva's and the Angels, including their characteristics, their traits and even their myriad similarities with one another. We learn of NERV's founding and purpose, the people who govern NERV, NERV's mother group, NERV's rival (Not completely inconsequential, as that rivalry illustrated both the dire nature of the Earth's situation as well as NERV's necessity in fixing it) and more. Not to mention things like Rei and her creation, the backstories of each character, how they relate to each other and that everything you mentioned is given great detail and focus. One of my favorite things about Evangelion is that it simultaneously disburses lots of info and conceals lots of info. And the world is brimming with enough information that it is equal parts a world a lot like our own and a world our own could be.

There's definitely a "MotW" feeling to Eva's earlier episode and thematically, it's all over the place at that time as well, but it also does a swell job of illustrating just how drastic the situations the pilots face are; I never got the feeling there were any simple returns to routine. A thing the series does well is demonstrate how much damage angels (and even Eva's) do to Japan and also how well NERV is prepared to deal with these things. The angels are a serious threat but human ingenuity is peerless.

I agree that Misato and Shinji are well-presented characters, but I disagree with Asuka being inhuman and the absence of Rei. Asuka gets a lot of shit because she's often cruel but she's certainly a human character. Her situation is a lot like Shinji's, she deals with it differently and that's her reason for piloting the Eva. What makes Asuka human is contradiction: She simultaneously longs to demonstrate he strength and independence and yet she wants others, especially Shinji, to confirm that strength and independence. T'would be simple to describe her as a tsundere and it's an apt description, though a wanting one; she's a much more organic presentation of one to be sure.

The statement "the analysis is organic" is vague. Would be cool if you clarified

The purpose of the Human Instrumentality Project is not a an effort to combine the "true self" and the "ideal self" as expounded by some psychology course. It borrows it's concept from an Arthur C. Clarke novel (the name of which escapes me atm) and it's ultimate purpose is the evolution of mankind. Seele's inspiration for this is extremely vague (as understood by the series); I personally deduced that they had planned such a unification of humanity as a sort of salve for the helplessness they feel, being accosted by such tragedies as the Second Impact and the invasion of the Angels. You will get the real reason for Instrumentality when you watch End of Evangelion.

As for the "character summaries," I don't think they were laughable at all. They served the purpose of demonstrating that mind probing I mentioned, of fleshing out the characters (and there were things in those summaries not espoused by events in the series, though their was some revealing recidivism in the summaries) and of demonstrating one of the results of instrumentality.

I do think that, despite my lack of interest in Code Geass, those fights looked pretty cool. But the reason Eva's battles are interesting is actually BECAUSE they don't look like other mecha battles: They look like gigantic humans fighting with typical human tools (and when things get hectic, fighting like lower primates) against other animals (much like hunters). I like frantic fight choreography as much as the next guy but these battles are a welcome break from that sort of fare. They've got a real sense of scale and impact and, for battles between gigantic humans and "aliens" that are virtually genotypically identical to humans, they're pretty realistic. I love Shinji's charge against Shamshel, the technomancy of Ireul and Bardiel, the marine battle with Gaghiel and though there's much else for me to enjoy in the series, End of Evangelion features my favorite battle from any fictional setting. It's both beautifully well-animated and very dramatic...

As for your question at the end, I think it's answered in the third or fourth point...

This is a good discussion

Zero plz

The plot structure is really impressive when you consider the budget and time constraints; it's well paced (it divulges a lot more information in 26 episodes than many other shows do in excess of that), lots of things actually happen (as in world-building, character development, titanic conflicts, etc.)

The fights are the stark opposite of "horrible"; they're extremely well-animated, quick, drastic and they exhibit a common theme of desperate struggles and Pyrrhic Victories, as well as the indefatigable nature of the human fighting spirit (as well as its endless creative potential)

The "back and forth" you're commenting on is only really explicit in the TV series conclusion and even then its function is essential to understanding the characters and the show as well. It's not only a frighteningly well-framed emulation of the way many people relentless probe their own minds, it illustrates just how multidimensional each character is, highlights their similarities, contrasts them and perhaps most importantly, depicts the impact of the coalescence of all human souls (and thus consciousness).

and man dat soundtrack

peep dis shit

and this too

"I know a little bit about psychology and though it's not really relevant here at all, this anime sucks"

i clicked on other reviews for school days and on the first page noticed overall ratings of 9,4,9,7,3,7,8,10,7,8. So I decided to read one of the reviews randomly. Here is a tidbit of what I read.

School Days.
Personally, both one of the best and worst anime I've ever seen.
Story: 9
I thought the story was technically excellent. Very interesting and completely not what you expect at first impression.

While I was watching it, I didn't like it, because it made me angry...but then when I stopped to think, I realized, wow, that means it's actually really skillfully done. It makes you feel everything.

Also, the way that they wrapped it up in the end left me speechless. I'm still not even exactly sure how I feel about it, but I think that's how it's supposed to make you feel, and they pull it off in a really amazing way.
