I don't know about the different versions, i watched it long ago and it was even a dubbed version broadcasted on a national tv. Luckily i switched to original dubs not much later but i should rewatch it in Japanese, i'll probably do it before watching the new Eva movies.

Sounds like a nice anime, i'm not sure it's my genre but i'll look into it.
+10 points for using the word "bildungsroman"! ^o^

Haha that's possible, i don't remember where i wrote it but it's probably in my club's introduction. Nice to see i'm not the only "paranoid" one about the net. Let's call ourselves risk-conscious ;) i'm pm'ing you that, i just avoid leaving most personal info on the open indicizeable net.

Lol you're right. I've never seen my compatibility displayed with any user, so it looks like MAL uses score to determine it rather than how many anime you have in common. I'm afraid i'll never know my compatibility with anyone (" =_=)
I read something about Green Green and sadly it doesn't seem something i'd like. I'm not making spoiler since you haven't finished it yet, but you'll understand what i mean eventually.

Kamisama no Memochou is a strange anime, it wasn't bad but i didn't like it that much for many reasons. First thing, it feels incredibly rushed; for a 12 episode anime (13 if you consider that the first episode is 40 minutes long) it features a lot of characters, but doesn't tell you much about them. By the end of it, all you know about them can be summed up with a nickname or a short description. If i were in there, i could be "the guy that likes happy comedies", the same happens to most of those poor guys. Sometimes in the cases there are particulars that don't totally make sense, so i was left wondering how the hell did that happen. Writing about mysteries is difficult, because if you're not familiar with the matter you end up like the guy who forgot his keys inside his home and got locked out, so smashed the door with an axe just to discover that the window next to it has been open all the time.
There's also another big issue. If you are interested in the show, you probably read that the main girl is a detective; not only that, she's an amazing one! Then why all she does is solving cases for her friends? We never see a single customer... no, not even a single outsider! Something's off. From here you start wondering "then who is this girl? how does she live? who pays for all that equipment if everybody's a neet?" and so on, the questions could be infinite and this brings us back to the first point: we don't know anything about almost anyone, not even the protagonist.
I'd say a couple of other things, but those would involve spoilers, so i'll tell you if you decide to watch it.
Not much can be said about the voice acting too, because the three main characters are all voiced by fairly new seiyuu, they did a nice work but their presence does not by itself justify watching the show. At least you can hear a great-as-usual Daisuke Ono, but i don't think a guy would care too much about him ;)
The art is pretty and the characters are nicely done, i heard the chara design is from the same artist of the "Atelier Rorona" games, so if you're a fan of those you'll probably like it even more.
Like i said in the beginning, this is not a bad anime at all, but there are some problems with the details, so you don't have to think too much about them and just let yourself go with the flow. It will be difficult, because detective anime are about thinking, but if you can do that, you'll probably enjoy it.

Whoah, your right :) but you sure do score your anime quite harshly? every one of my score is higher :/ haha how so?

"Sorry for the late reply."

Don't worry about it. I don't expect replying to me to take higher priority than the rest of your life.

"Most of the series is a mix of pulp + sci-fi + action + comedy + noir"

I find it's a mix of those at varying times, heavily centered around the noir and action elements. As an example, since it was airing tonight, I watched Black Dog Serenade again (a Jet episode), and it was very heavily steeped in noir, with some action incorporated in. But you also have your lighter episodes, like the feng shui episode. Some episodes are more diverse than others, some are more strictly in particular camps.

"Spike"

While of course he's an important character, would you elaborate upon how he's the anchor? Episodes which move the plot forward do tend to focus on him, but that plot isn't the main focus of Cowboy Bebop, after all.

"[Cats]"

Well, you could walk one if you were truly so determined, but indeed. Although cats aren't akin to goldfish. They'll certainly enthusiastically interact with you, just not in the frisbee throwing, slipper fetching kind of way.

"I don't think I understand what you mean by this."

I'm suggesting that perhaps you've not experienced a culture where this has been the case.

"I don't know why I have the impression that it's a particularly ornery place"

Well, it is. It's easy to start a fight, and many threads are created just for the sake of stirring the pot. And, being 4chan, people aren't shy about being abrasive. None of which is too much of an issue when you know how to navigate that culture, though. It's more hostile than some other places simply because it can be, but only so far as you let it be.

"Can we both agree on this explanation?"

I can't help but find it a bit simplistic, even for something that is supposed to be introductory. It seems that in an effort to be "at brief," it instead is barebones, lacking key elaboration.

"But we're showed Zari-Bars, which is just far enough out of the reach of Hellywood, and it is mentioned (albeit through unreliable proxies) that there are places to Hellywood's power doesn't reach"

I don't recall this. Again, could elaborate on the context of this? They may, at best, be the Emmanuel Goldstein of Ima. And, perhaps critically, is The Giver any less dystopian because

"but the above link would seem to indicate that one needs more than just this sort of indirect control to classify a work as dystopian."

I'm not seeing that in the linked text.

"there is still Shu's homeworld, as you point out, which is not dystopian."

Yes, but that's so incidental as to be irrelevant, as only those in charge of Hellywood are depicted of being capable of moving between the two worlds. The world which is the stage for Ima is not pardoned by the existence of Shu's world.

"[sales]"

I think you're misinterpreting something somewhere, as BDs outsell DVDs of the same title several times over. You can see it pretty clearly here, with the second volume of Nisemonogatari selling around six times as many BDs as DVDs, or the nearly 3x difference between Haganai's BD and DVD sales. That's true of pretty much every series. Sometimes the BDs don't sell multiple times what the DVDs sold, but it's still generally more.

"[Internet]"

It's the same regionally here, although the ISPs aren't universally completely awful. Of course, they seem to use more resources stifling competition that could easily offer better deals than them than they do improving their own services. Granted mine isn't as bad as I gather yours is, but the blame seems to be very similar, if not identical. Although it's getting better, since a major competitor (not that there's any minor ones) is actually steadily moving into the area, which ought to bring about some healthy competition. Hopefully you'll be as lucky, because as you've depicted, the alternatives aren't that great.

"[DW]"

Right now, it just seems very pulpy. Hopefully you're right and it doesn't stray too far, because I have no faith in this series to be able to make that kind of leap.

"You went to a Catholic school?"

No. I was in my school's choir, and due to historical reasons, a lot of rather solid choral arrangements happen to be religious Latin ones. Not that we didn't also cover a lot of other turf, mind you.

"VLC"

Is there any reason you use this despite it being considerably inferior to the alternatives? I don't know what OS you use, but mplayer2 is available on everything people actually use, and is preferable to VLC, as would be CCCP on Windows (or configuring it yourself). I'm not sure about MPC:HC as I haven't used Windows in years, but mplayer2 lets you alter the speed as well.

"Eve no Jikan"

I've been meaning to rewatch that by way of the movie, since it's been a while. But of titles I can better recall, the same director made Pale Cocoon, which was interesting in the same vein. You might want to keep an eye on Patema Inverted, also by the same director. The little prologue bits so far give me vibes of both Eve no Jikan and Pale Cocoon, with something fresh as well.

Hmm. Considering what you stated, you'd probably like Glassy Ocean as well. Aquatic Language is something that might interest you, but it feels more like a beta test for Eve no Jikan. Not that it's bad, though.

"Fairy Tail"

You're probably right. I do have Bleach in my list, but only because it airs on TV. I'm willing to watch something like this weekly on TV if it's not too awful, but the prospect of downloading dozens or hundreds of episodes of these and actively choosing to watch them is a mix of daunting and unappealing.

Yo! Yeah, it's a really good song! I totally loved Clannad sooo much! Lol
IssacandAsimov May 27, 2012 7:39 PM
"No. Rather, it's about consistency. If you're doing one thing throughout most of the series, and then do something else, the different parts of your story aren't going to mesh well."

I'm not sure I see an accentuation of the overarching narrative themes which the ancillary themes fall into as a digression, though. Actually, thinking about it some more, I'm not even particularly sure that it doesn't still incorporate other elements. Would you mind elaborating a bit more on this point?

"[Cats]"

Personally, mine greets me at the door and starts nuzzling my legs and demanding attention. But he can still handle himself for the most part, and I like that low maintenance aspect. I do see where someone who wants a more proactive pet would prefer a dog (as I assume you were hinting towards), though.

"It's probably a good idea to try to be as objective as possible when you're discussing it, however, even if only because it tends to make for a more interesting and nuanced discussion."

Maybe it's a difference of experienced cultures. Opinionated discussions of anime (and the surrounding culture) have been some of the most enlightening and fascinating I've ever had on the subject.

"/a/[...]so when I do it in my personal time, I like the experience to be a bit more pleasurable."

I find this an odd conflation. You can certainly find an argument at pretty much any time on /a/, but you can also just find a wealth of interesting people to discuss anime, figures, manga, otaku culture, life, etc. with. It's really only as contentious as you want it to be. If you just know how to look for it, it's actually a pretty friendly and educational place.

"faith in the Internet"

Just like with /a/, it's all about knowing where to look and separating the wheat from the chaff. It's basically real life, just more brazen.

"I suppose that if you're in a less argumentative environment, people are less likely to question the veracity of generally-accepted sources like Wikipedia, because they don't have any big stake in proving you wrong."

While an argumentative place is surely more likely to call out using Wikipedia as a source to prove something, the undercurrent of unreliability seemed universal. Well, so it goes.

"[Gantz]"

While I'm not familiar with that work, there is of course a difference between dystopian and just gritty. But I trust that we're both familiar with at least the basics of what constitutes a dystopia.

"In Ima, a better world is alluded to."

Unless you're possibly referring to Shu's original world, could you clarify this?

"I wouldn't have thought Blu-ray sales would be that low. The technology seems to have been quite a failure for Sony."

BD sales are actually doing fine, it's just that anime doesn't sell that many copies for a multitude of reasons (high prices, limited viewership, being a luxury collector good). Those are actually normal numbers. This is a bit rough, but gives a generally accurate idea of how to interpret sales numbers (of course, that varies a bit with budget sizes and potential other factors). I've never known anime to typically be a high volume item in Japan. (It's even worse in other countries)

"That would be great! Thanks."

When I was double checking a URL, I found a better list, which I should've figured already existed. That can be found here.

There's no point in my restating what's there, so here's two things not on there: These NHK lessons which aren't too bad, and this verb conjugator which has been invaluable a number of times.

To get back to your question about kanji decks for Anki, I took a look at a few, and the only one I found that actually seemed useful was a deck based off of Kanjidamage, which lacked some of the data Kanjidamage had, but it did have the benefit of being in Anki deck form.

"The problem is that it's quite difficult to get a hold of anime here, so a large swathe of what's on that list I'm just not able to watch. "

I'm not familiar with ISPs in South Africa, but based upon the comment about getting more bandwidth, I'm guessing there's some sort of cap? That's really too bad if so, because I'm not aware of any convenient way of getting around that. Especially when some series are 30-50 GB for a batch, and that's after the size reductions from 10bit encodes.

In that case, is your PTW list only series you've already acquired? Because it's pretty lengthy considering your stated difficulties in acquiring anime.

" But each episode becomes successively less sensical, and more serious, and it all just falls apart."

Oh, that's too bad. Say what you will about Puni Puni Poemi, but it at least knows what it is. It's not that a show can't make that sort of transition, but most of them simply don't have the talent.

I'm currently watching Deadman Wonderland on Toonami, and worry that it might go in that direction. Since you've seen it, does it do the same thing?

"[Elfen Lied]"

You're seeing a lot of the weaknesses in it that most people do. It's generally popular amongst those that haven't seen much anime and/or are young and are dazzled by the violence.

And you're right, it is an enjoyable OP. Brings back memories of singing those sorts of Latin songs back in high school.
